Nancy Critcher Frost, D. June 24, 2013

Nancy Critcher Frost, age 72, of Paul Critcher Drive, Boone, passed away Monday morning, June 24, 2013, at Watauga Medical Center.

Nancy was born October 7, 1940 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Paul and Ruby Bowles Critcher. She was a retired environmental secretary for Watauga County, and a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Nancy is survived by one son, Kenneth E. Frost of Boone; one daughter, Sonya McMillan of Alpharetta, Georgia, and one grandson, Christopher McMillan of Alpharetta.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Marvin Frost.

Funeral services for Nancy Critcher Frost will be conducted Thursday afternoon, June 27, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Bud Russell. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Watauga Humane Society, PO Box 1835, Boone, North Carolina, 28607.

John D. Houck, D. June 24, 2013

John D. Houck, age 84, of Soc Houck Road, Boone, passed away Monday, June 24, 2013, at Watauga Medical Center.

Mr. Houck was born May 22, 1929 in Watauga County, a son of the late Edgar Wade Houck and Susan Norris Houck. He was a retired machinist for Vermont American Corporation, and a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Boone. Mr. Houck served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Houck is survived by his wife, Jane Crowell Houck of the home; one son, John C. Houck and wife Kelene of Leominster, Massachusetts, and one brother, Robert Houck and wife Donna of Creston. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Edgar Elmo Houck and James Houck, and two sisters, Edna Earle Storie and Barbara Hicks.

Graveside services and burial for John D. Houck will be conducted Friday morning, June 28, 2013, at 11:00 o’clock, at Old Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Boone. Officiating will be Reverend Derek Boggs.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1820 East 7th Street, Charlotte, North Carolina, 28204.

Collie Mahala Mast Greer, D. June 23, 2013

Collie Mahala Mast Greer, age 101, of Granite Falls, passed away Sunday evening, June 23, 2013, at Camelot Manor Nursing and Rehab in Granite Falls.

Mrs. Greer is survived by three daughters, Annie Mast Bowman of Catawba, Carolyn Mast Trivette and husband Alfred of Granite Falls, and Judy Mast Combs and husband Willie of Sugar Grove, and three sons, James Patterson Mast of Taylorsville, Johnnie Mast and wife Bernice of Bethlehem, North Carolina, and Manley Mast and wife Phyllis of Boone. She is also survived by twenty-six grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren, twenty great great-grandchildren, three half sisters, and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Andy Patterson Mast, Sr.; her second husband, Allie Church; two sons, Andy Patterson Mast, Jr. and Roy Mast; one daughter, Jerline Speake; one brother, Hamilton “Ham” Mahala, and two sisters, Nancy Mahala and Edith Osborne.

Graveside services and burial for Collie Mahala Mast Greer will be conducted Friday afternoon, June 28, 2013, at 12:00 o’clock, at the Mast-Bingham Cemetery. Officaiting will be Reverend Jeffery Kiziah.

The family will receive friends Friday morning, from 11:00 until 12:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service. The body will lie in state, at the funeral home, prior to the graveside service.

Linda Mae Hicks Davis, 63, of Brookshire Road, Lenoir, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation in Boone. Born March 6, 1950 in the Valle Crucis community of Watauga County, she was a daughter of Linville Hicks and the late Hazel Ward Hicks. Linda’s love in life was her family, and she enjoyed keeping an immaculate home, and tending to her annual flower gardens. For a number of years, she was employed in the housekeeping department of various area motels. 

Linda was preceded in death by her husband, J. D. Davis; and is survived by her daughter, Mary Rich of Boone; her father, Linville Hicks of Boone; three grandchildren, Nicole Rich and companion, Brent Small, Tiffany Rich and companion Chris Small, and John Rich and wife Hayley, and great-grandson, Colton Rich, all of Lenoir; two sisters, Jean Harmon and husband Ernest and Helen Spencer, all of Vale; and three brothers, Frank Hicks and wife, Rosie, and Mack Hicks and wife Shirley, all of Vale, and Lee Hicks of Boone. A number of nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. 

Memorial services will be conducted Friday June 28th, 2013, at 2 PM at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Daniel Trantham. The family will receive friends Friday afternoon from 1 until 2 o’clock, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Mr. Grady William Yates, age 86, of Mountain City and formerly of Vilas, passed away Saturday morning, June 22, 2013 at Johnson City Medical Center. Born September 15, 1926 in Watauga County he was a son of the late Bartella Dennis Yates and Molly Brown Yates. Grady was a member of Willowdale Baptist Church and a US Army Veteran of WWII. He was retired from Singer Furniture. Grady was an avid baseball fan, a beekeeper, gardener and grew Christmas trees. 

He is survived by one daughter; Jane Wilson and husband Tony of Mountain City, six grand children; Tammy Helm and husband Brian of Wilmington, Travis Church and wife April of Vilas, Kenneth Scott Church and wife Brenda of Creston, James Yates and wife Amy of Deep Gap, Michelle Dollar and husband Buddy of Sugar Grove and Debbie Yates of Vilas, five great grandchildren; Ryan and Dalton Church of Vilas, Calvin and Faith Dollar of Sugar Grove, and Dusty Parlier of Vilas, five sisters; Vertie Broyhill of Lenoir, Mary Moretz and husband Wade of Deep Gap, Betty Townsend and husband Earl and Susie Townsend and husband Denver all of Lenoir, and Martha Reece and husband Johnny of Boone, two brothers; Claude Yates of Boone and Tommy Yates and wife Earlene of Boone. He is also survived by his extended family, Darlene and Jimmy Hicks of Vilas, Shelia Fletcher of Gastonia, Brad and Shannon Hicks of Greensboro, and Nickie Eller and Kendra Gail Hicks both of Vilas, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son James Yates, two sisters; Flossie Broyhill and Ruth Hayes, and two wives; Ella Mae Yates and Louise Yates. 

Memorial services for Mr. Grady William Yates will be conducted Monday evening at 6 o’clock at Austin and Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Eugene Braswell, Travis Church and James Yates. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Willowdale Baptist Church, 133 West Side Drive, Vilas, NC 28692. The family will receive friends Monday prior to the service from 5 o’clock until 6 o’clock at Austin and Barnes Funeral Home. Alma Ward Harmon, D. June 22, 2013

Alma Ward Harmon, age 81, of 6026 US Highway 321 North, Sugar Grove, passed away Saturday morning, June 22, 2013, at her home.

Mrs. Harmon was born June 21, 1932 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Robert Lee Ward, Sr. and Eliza Harmon Ward. She was a retired bookkeeper for Mack Brown Chevrolet in Boone, and office manager for many years. Mrs. Harmon was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Harmon is survived by two daughters, Sandy Burton and Pam Harmon, both of Sugar Grove; one granddaughter, Chasity Matheson and husband David of Sugar Grove; one grandson, Brandon Burton of Sugar Grove; one great-grandson, Aristotle Matheson of Sugar Grove; two brothers, Linville Ward and wife Orbie of Boone, and Tommy Joe Ward and wife Louise of Sugar Grove, and two sisters-in-law, Mable Ward of Boone, and Gail Ward of Sugar Grove. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Burl McKinley Harmon, and three brothers, Vance Ward, Clay Ward, and Robert Lee Ward, Jr.

Memorial services for Alma Ward Harmon will be conducted Monday afternoon, June 24, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock, at Zion Hill Baptist Church. Officiating will be Reverend David Icenhour, Reverend Herbert McCoy, and Reverend Quincy Norris.

The family will receive friends, at the church, following the memorial service.

Jeanette Owens Carroll, D. June 21, 2013

Jeanette Owens Carroll, age 79, of Meadowview Drive, Boone, passed away Friday evening, June 21, 2013, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Jeanette was born August 24, 1933 in Newbridge, Wales, a daughter of the late Harold and Beryl Dalton Owens. She was a LPN with over 35 years of service.

Jeanette is survived by two sons, James L. Carroll and wife Amy of Benbrook, Texas, and Bradley Henderson of Boone; one granddaughter, Megan Rose Carroll of Benbrook, Texas; two grandsons, Robert Owen Carroll and William Sean Carroll, both of Benbrook, Texas; two sisters, Karen Roberts and Kate Hopkins, both of Newbridge, Wales, and two brothers, John Owens and Gerald Owens, both of London, England.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Baxter Cooledge Carroll, and one son, Steven Wayne Carroll.

There will be no services for Jeanette Owens Carroll.

Odd Bernhard Nordhuus, D. June 18, 2013

Mr. Odd Bernhard Nordhuus, age 72, of 260 Bridle Creek Trail in Deep Gap died Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at his home.

Survivors include two daughters, Rita Madsen and husband KIm of Cornelius, NC and Irene Grafton and husband Duane of Deep Gap; a granddaughter Hannah Madsen of Cornelius, NC;three grandsons, Kristian Madsen of Cornelius, NC, Jacob Grafton and Nicholas Grafton both of Deep Gap. He also leaves two sisters Inger Firing and Reidun Fredriksen both of Norway.

Private Memorial Services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to, Watauga Humane Society, P.O. Box 1835, Boone, NC 28607.
