Jim Holshouser, D. June 17, 2013

Former Governor James E. Holshouser, Jr. passed away on Monday, June 17, 2013 after a period of declining health. Born in Boone NC to The Honorable James “Peck” Holshouser, Sr. and Virginia Dayvault Holshouser.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peck and Virginia Holshouser; his wife, Patricia Hollingsworth Holshouser, his sister, Laura Mast, and a baby boy in 1968.

He is survived by his daughter, Ginny Holshouser Mills and husband, John, of Winston-Salem and daughters, Holly and Maggie; niece Malinda M. Rathbone and children, Morgan and Bailey; nephew Allen Mast and wife, Dana, and daughter Esther; niece Amy Mast; nephew Tim Mast and wife, Christine and children, Olivia, Anabel and Audrey; sister-in-law Nancy H. Brown and children, Victor and wife, Sharon, and Deanna and son, Kasey; sister-in-law Linda H. Simms and husband, Tom, and children Amy, and Jeff, wife Heidi and son, Lucas; and a host of cousins and extended family.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 21, 2013 at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian at 1:00 o’clock.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, June 20, 2013 in the Fellowship Hall of Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church from 6:00 until 8:30.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church, 330 S. May Street, Southern Pines, NC 28387.

Larry Gale Isaacs, D. Jan. 16, 2013

Mr. Larry Gale Isaacs, age 50, of Isaacs Branch Road, Sugar Grove, passed away Sunday at his home.

He is survived by his father, Johnny O. Isaacs; one brother Randy Isaacs and wife, Becky; one sister, Lori Isaacs Harmon, all of Sugar Grove; half-brother, Charles Trivette and two aunts, Willa Jean Guy and Anne Guy all of Zionville; and, by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Sue Guy Isaacs.

There are no services scheduled for Larry Gale Isaacs at this time.

Betty Parker Costner, D. June 16, 2013

Mrs. Betty Jean Parker Costner, 79, died Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Carolina’s Medical Center, Charlotte.

Born in Spartanburg, SC, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Nathan Parker and Alma Frances Gosnell Parker and the widow of James Ray Costner.

Mrs. Costner was a long-time Charlotte resident, a graduate of York High School, retired as Administrative Assistant at Tarcon, Inc., and was a devoted caregiver for her grandchildren – Logan, Savana and Sierra.

Surviving are sons, James Ray Costner, III, and Charles Eugene Costner both of Charlotte, NC and Andrew “Drew” Parker Costner and wife, Brenda, of Boone, NC; brothers, William A. Parker, Sr. of Charleston, SC and Bobby Joe Parker of Augusta, GA; four grandsons; five granddaughters; nine great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Jean Parker Costner will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 22, at Bobo Funeral Chapel (Spartanburg, SC) officiated by James R. Costner, III, MARS. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park (Spartanburg, SC).

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral chapel

Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to the family in care of Bobo Funeral Chapel, 1860 Cannons Campground Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.

Mr. Gary Kenneth Robinson, age 57, of Mast Gap Road, Sugar Grove, North Carolina, passed away Friday evening, June 14, 2013 at Watauga Medical Center.

Gary is survived by his wife Delores Combs Robinson of the home; his mother Pauline Norris Robinson of North Wilkesboro, NC; two sisters Lynn Pearson and special friend Dave Kellaway of North Wilkesboro, NC, Patricia Wagoner and her husband Gene of Roaring River, NC; a half brother Roger Whitaker and his wife Garbie of Monticello, MN; a sister-in-law Vickie Greene and husband Dana of Sugar Grove, also a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind two special companions, Dinkie and Scooter.

He was preceded in death by his father John Kenneth Robinson.

Funeral services for Mr. Gary Kenneth Robinson will be conducted at 2:00 PM Monday, June 17 at Westside Baptist Church with Reverend David Ward, Reverend Delmar James and Reverend Harold Danner officiating. The body will lie in state from 12:30 – 2:00 PM Monday as the family receives friends at the church. Burial will follow at Guy/Combs cemetery.

John Clarke Howell, D. June 14, 2013

Mr. John Clarke Howell, age 73, of Boone, passed away Friday morning at his home.

Born April 12, 1940 in Boone, he was a son of the late John Tatum and Irene McDade Howell. Clark was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Boone. He was retired from ASU food services where he was employed for over 27 years.

He is survived by his brother, Gene Howell and wife Beulah of Boone. He is also survived by a niece Patricia Watham of Hampton, VA, a Nephew Bryan Howell and wife Janelle of Greensboro, a niece Vickie Smith and husband Chris of Durham and a niece Laura Pekarek and husband Mike of Apex. He is also survived by a number of cousins and great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for John Clark Howell will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at First Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Roy Dobyns. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday afternoon prior to the service from 1 o’clock until 2 o’clock at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to First Baptist Church,

“Rise Up” fund, 375 W. King Street, Boone, NC 28607.
