Mary L. Lawrence, age 89, of 104 Glendale Drive, Boone, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone.
Mrs. Lawrence was born March 13, 1924 in Watauga County. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Boone.
Mrs. Lawrence is survived by one son, Dr. Charles W. McKaraher and wife Anne of Hickory; one step-son, Tom Lawrence and wife Earlyn of Raleigh; one step-daughter, Mary Lawrence Jellicorse of Greensboro; one son-in-law, William “Bill” Winkler of Blowing Rock; special friend, Graham W. Somers of Charlotte; one granddaughter, Kristen McKaraher of Hickory; three grandsons, Andrew McKaraher of Hickory, Lee Winkler and wife Janta of Boone, David Winkler and wife Jennifer of Kirkland, Washington; one great-grandson, Christopher Winkler of Kirkland, Washington; four step-granddaughters, Sharon Lawrence of Los Angeles, California, Jennifer Jellicorse of Greensboro, Rebecca Winkler of Kirkland, Washington, and Ann Winkler of Boone; one step-grandson, Mark Lawrence and wife Lisa of Raleigh; three step great-grandsons, Jess Lawrence and Dylan Lawrence, both of Raleigh, and Junah of Kirkland, Washington.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. C. Ray Lawrence, and two daughters, Barbara Winkler and Linda Kay McKaraher.
Funeral services for Mary L. Lawrence will be conducted Saturday morning, June 15, 2013, at 11:00 o’clock, at First Baptist Church of Boone. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Dr. Roy A. Dobyns. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 7:00 until 9:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Frank Reid, D. June 10, 2013
Arthur Franklin Reid Jr., 75, of Hudson, passed away Monday, June 10th at his home.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda Coffey Reid of the home; his sons, Lynn Reid and wife Jean of Lenoir, and David Reid and wife Debra of Hudson; his brother, Mack Reid and wife Arvie of Lenoir; niece, Tammy Lynn Coffey of Maryland; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
In addition to his parents, Arthur Franklin Reid, Sr., and Ola Bell Shore Reid, he was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Ann Reid.
Funeral services for Arthur Franklin Reid, Jr. will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 13 at Pendry’s Chapel with Reverend Steve Walsh officiating. The family will receive friends at Pendry\’s Lenoir Funeral Home on Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00p.m. prior to the service.

Joyce Weaver Holder, D. June 9, 2013
Joyce Weaver Holder, age 89, of 1602 Friendship Church Road, Boone, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2013, at her home.
Mrs. Holder was born May 2, 1924 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Elzie and Grace Church Weaver. She was a homemaker and a member of Laurel Fork Baptist Church.
Mrs. Holder is survived by two daughters, Darlene Holder of Boone, and Betty Ruth Holder Hudgins of Charlotte; one son, Frank Holder and wife Angela of Concord; five granddaughters, Tish Harman DeLuca of Charlotte, Katie Holder, Krissie Holder, Kelsie Holder, and Kellie Holder, all of Concord; one grandson, Robbie Holder of Concord; four great-grandsons, Nicolas DeLuca, Max DeLuca, Sam DeLuca, and Jack Deluca, all of Charlotte; five brothers, Johnnie E. Weaver of Verndale, Minnesota, William Weaver of Vilas, Squire E. Weaver, Jr., Roby F. Weaver and wife Margaret, and Roy Weaver and wife Pat, all of Boone, and three sisters, Lois Triplett, Doris W. Greer and husband Richard, and Louise W. Davis, all of Boone. She is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Holder.
Funeral services for Joyce Weaver Holder will be conducted Wednesday morning, June 12, 2013, at 11:00 o’clock, at Friendship United Methodist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Max West and Reverend Steve Bass. Burial will follow in Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends following the service and burial, at the family home, beside of the church.

George Winebarger, D. June 9, 2013
George H. Winebarger, age 87, of 1767 Burkett Road, Boone, passed away Sunday morning, June 9, 2013, at Watauga Medical Center.
Mr. Winebarger was born October 6, 1925 in Watauga County, a son of the late William and Maudie Proffitt Winebarger. He was a retired supervisor for TRW/IRC for over 25 years, and served in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Winebarger was a member of Bethany Lutheran church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, the Church Council Group, and an active member of the men’s group. He was also treasurer of the Bethany Cemeteries Fund. Always involved with his community, Mr. Winebarger was a founding member of Meat Camp Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Winebarger is survived by his daughter, Karen W. Critcher and husband Phil of Boone; two sons, Ben G. Winebarger and wife Madelyn, and Joe P. Winebarger and wife Sue, all of Boone; three granddaughters, Mary Ruth Hollifield and husband Kenny of Marion, Nancy Critcher-White and husband Andy of Asheville, and Sara Norris and husband Garrett of Deep Gap; five grandsons, Derek Winebarger and wife Danielle of Savage, Minnesota, Tim Critcher of Boone, James Winebarger of Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, Nathan Winebarger, and Neal Winebarger, both of Boone; three great-granddaughter’s, Claire Hollifield, Stella Winebarger, and Hannah Critcher; five great-grandsons, Wil Critcher, Robert Critcher, Benjamin Critcher, Trenten Winebarger, and Avery Hollifield; three sisters, Margaret Miller and Martha Lookabill, both of Boone, and Lola Bowles and husband Burl of Lexington, and his special friends, Carrie Zowadski, Helen Zowadski, Tammy Hampton, and Braden Hampton. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Lookabill Winebarger; seven brothers, and two sisters.
Funeral services for George H. Winebarger will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, June 11, 2013, at 4:00 o’clock, at Bethany Lutheran Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 3:30 PM. Officiating will be Pastor John Bollinger, Pastor Laura Weant, and Vicar Daniel Clark. Military graveside rites and burial, provided by American Legion Post 130 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow in Old Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon, from 1:00 until 3:30 PM, at the church, prior to the service.

Helen Schulz Duncan, D. June 8, 2013
Helen Schulz Duncan, age 88, of Norwood Circle, Blowing Rock, North Carolina, died on June 8, 2013.
Born in Charlotte, North Carolina to Susie and Howard B. Wentz. Helen spent her early years in Albemarle, North Carolina, and graduated from Virginia Intermont College. She married George Schulz, a Naval Officer and later Circuit Court Judge, in Miami, Florida in 1943. After 48 years of marriage, George passed away. In 1992 Helen married Buell Duncan who, along with his wife Elizabeth, were neighbors and long-time friends of the family. Elizabeth had passed away some years previously. Buell and Helen resided in Orlando, Florida and Blowing Rock. Helen spent summers in Blowing Rock for 20 years before settling permanently in 1976. Helen loved Blowing Rock and was very active in community affairs. She was a long-time member and director of Blowing Rock Country Club, board member of the Blowing Rock Hospital and member of St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church. She will be missed by her many bridge and golf friends and family.
She is survived by her three children: Sheran Reich (Paul) of Winter Park, Florida, Buddy Schulz (Mary Lou) and Marty Schulz, both of Jacksonville, Florida; three grandchildren: Lynn Brooks Howle, Jr. (Dana), Kathryn Helen Ches (Jeremy), and Elizabeth Sawyer (John), and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on June 14th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church in Blowing Rock. Officiating will be Father Rick Lawler.
The family will receive friends, at a reception following the service, at the church.
Memorials may be given in memory of Helen to St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church or the charity of your choice.

Bob Overholt, D. June 7, 2013
Robert S. “Bob” Overholt, age 79, of Sugar Grove, passed away Friday morning, June 7, 2013, at his home.
Bob graduated from John Brown University in 1958 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He retired after 27 years with the United States Postal Service. He received an award for Distinguished Service for leading the team that developed the Parcel Bar Coding System. He was an active member of Alliance Bible Fellowship and many Men’s Bible Studies, and had a heart for the life changing work of Freedom Farm Ministries in Boone.
Mr. Overholt is survived by his wife of 31 years, Carolyn Johnson Overholt of the home; four daughters, Shirley and George Constantino of Midlothian, Virginia, Leslie and John Carter of Fairfax, Virginia, Alison and Jimmy Dees of Sugar Grove, and Heather and Steve Glissman of Richmond, Virginia; three sons, Robert Russell Overholt of Richmond, Virginia, Arthur Alan Overholt of Charlotte, and Michael and Dorothy Fogle of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, and two brothers, Darwin Overholt and wife Jean of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and George Overholt and wife Lois of Seattle, Washington. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two aunts, and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Narcissa Whitman Overholt; his father and mother, Horace and Margaret Overholt; one sister, Elaine Overholt Harris, and two brothers, Lloyd and Horace Lee Overholt.
Funeral services for Robert S.”Bob” Overholt will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, June 11, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock, at Alliance Bible Fellowship. His body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Scott Andrews and Pastor Allan Gardner. Burial will follow in St. Johns Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Marshall Lincoln Travis, D. June 6, 2013
Mr. Marshall Lincoln Travis, age 92, of Blowing Rock, went home to be his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Thursday evening, June 6, 2013 at Blowing Rock Hospital.
Mr. Travis was born February 29, 1921 in Catawba County, a son of the late Marshall H. Travis and Mildred Catherine Beatrice Lorraine Bollinger Travis. He was the retired owner and operator of Conover Cleaners and a member of Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church. Mr. Travis was a 32 degree past master of the Masonic Lodge in Conover.
Mr. Travis is survived by one daughter, Anne Marshall Winebarger and husband Tom of Boone; one son, Charles Gordon Travis and wife Joy of Blowing Rock; two granddaughters, Catherine Lee Bratcher and husband Justin of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Jo Elizabeth Rose Richard and husband Jerek of Kennesaw, Georgia; two great-grandsons, Benjamin Elliott Bratcher and Evan Lucas Bratcher, both of Chattanooga, and one sister, Juanita Iscenhower and husband Joe of Hickory.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Mae Isenhower Travis.
A memorial service for Mr. Marshall Lincoln Travis will be conducted Sunday afternoon, June 9, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock, at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock. Officiating will be The Reverend Dr. Lynn Stall. Burial will follow in City Cemetery of Conover.

Catherine Miller Cole, age 79, of Clint Norris Road, Boone, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at her home.
Catherine was born February 19, 1934 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Lloyd Van Miller and Lucille Wilson Miller. She was a retired supervisor for Blue Ridge Shoe Company in Boone, and a member of Perkinsville Baptist Church.
Catherine enjoyed cooking and loved sharing it with family, friends and people throughout the community.
Catherine is survived by her husband, Clarence D. Cole of the home; one daughter, Brenda Payne of Boone; one son, Rick Cole and wife Karen of Clemmons; two granddaughters, Sarah Cox and husband Jeff of Boone, and Heather Cole of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Matt Payne and wife Courtney of Kernersville, and Brandon Cole of Pfafftown; one great-granddaughter, Faith Cox of Boone; two step-granddaughters, Marie Harrison and husband Martin, and Jennifer Haymes, all of Clemmons; three step great-grandchildren, Jack Harrison, Emma Harrison, and Olivia Grace Harrison, all of Clemmons, and one brother, John “J.C.” Miller and wife Wanda of Indian Trail. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Arville Miller, and one sister-in-law, Jean Winebarger Miller.

The body will lie in state, at the church, from 2:30 until 4:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Seth Norris. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

Margaret Louise Cook, D. June 5, 2013
Margaret Louise Davis Cook, 96, of Isenhour Road, Zionville, passed Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at the Davant Extended Care Facility in Blowing Rock.
Born July 16, 1916 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Claude and Bulas Moody Davis. Mrs. Cook was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She retired from ASU before working a number of years at Watauga Medical Center.
Mrs. Cook cherished her family, loved her church, and enjoyed preparing meals and sewing for those close to her.
She is survived by one sister, Mary Ellen Kapp of King; sister-in-laws: Rena Davis of Morganton and Edith Cook of Zionville; granddaughter, Marty Rominger and husband, Dale, of Zionville; great-granddaughter, Olivia Bryant of Boone; two great-grandsons, Justin and Phillip Rominger, both of Zionville; great-great-grandson, Peyton Church of Boone; and two grandchildren, Melinda Arnette and husband, Jeff, of Clyde, and Billy Baird and wife, Jessica, of West Jefferson and by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley John Cook; daughter, Mabel Jean Cook Baird, grandson, Michael Ray Baird; three brothers, Lewis, Ralph and Glenn Davis; and one sister, Ruth Eggers.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday June 8. 2013,at 2 PM at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Allan Perry and Rev. Herbert McCoy. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Yolande Salter, D. June 3, 2013
Yolande Salter, 86, of Vilas, NC passed away June 3, 2013 at the Blowing Rock Hospital. She suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for a number of years. Born November 12, 1926 in Montreal, Quebec, she was a daughter of Albert and Marianna Picotte. She was married to David Salter of Vilas.
Yolande was an accomplished classical pianist with a Bachelor of Music degree. She was featured on music programs by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in her early life. She played by ear, and was a hit when asked to play in piano bars. Yolande had a great joie de vivre, and was dearly loved by her husband, children, grandchildren and friends. She was a proficient seamstress who made her own clothes, was an ardent skier and tennis player, and loved bicycling and long walks with her dogs.
Yolande had four children by her first husband, James McKenna of Beaconsfield, Quebec. They are Nancy Wendt of Newport Beach, CA, Christiane McKenna-Clout, of Port Hope, Ontario, Canada, Keith McKenna of Comox, British Columbia, and Colleen McKenna Fisher of Frisco, NC. Her grandchildren are Stephanie Swanson and Andrea Tobin of San Diego, CA and Jeffrey Vaughn Clout of Port Hope, Ontario.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Therese Belanger of Perce, Quebec and Pierette Denault of Lisbon, Portugal; and brother, Albert Picotte of Valois, Quebec.
In recent years, she lived in Westmount, Quebec, Governors Harbour, Eleuthera, Bahamas, and Vilas, NC.
A family gathering to celebrate her life was held at the family home in Vilas.
Suggested charities are the Humane Society and the Alzheimer’s Association.
