Gail Cooper Ballin, age 70, of All Hollows Rd., Boone, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2013 at her home. 

Born March 26, 1943 in Queens, NY, she was a daughter of William and Doris Madison Cooper. Her love in life was her family and her favorite pastime was spending hours landscaping the property and tending to her annual flower gardens. 

Mrs. Ballin is survived by her daughter, Lisa Madison Wendt and husband, Karl, of Newport, NC; her son, Colin Ball and wife, Nancy, of Plymouth, Mass.; and her sister, Candace Cooper of Roswell, New Mexico.     

Services will be private.

Roland ‘Matt’ Mattoon, D. July 12, 2013.

Mr. Roland Harry “Matt” Mattoon, age 66, of Rembrandt Drive, Boone, passed away at home Friday July 12, 2013. Born July 12, 1947 in East Orange, New Jersey, he was a son of the late Gordon D and Dorothy Cheeseman Mattoon. Matt was a US Navy Veteran, having served his country 20 years. He was an Electrical Engineer by trade and enjoyed traveling and NASCAR racing.     

He is survived by his wife; Linda Scott Mattoon, one son; David Mattoon and wife Susan, two grandsons; John and Matthew Mattoon all of Temecula, California, one sister, Patti Roy and husband Jim of Mayetta, NJ, and one sister in law; Jean Lendvay and husband Gregory of Dallas, Texas. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters; Merle Waldo and Lynn Finkelday and two brothers; Gordon and Robert “Bobby” Mattoon.    

Private memorial services will be held at a later date in New Jersey. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans, Gift Processing, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250-0301. Lyle B. Cook, age 90 of 1791 Browns Chapel Road in Boone, died Thursday evening, July 11, 2013, at his home.

Mr. Cook was born December 14, 1922, a son of the late Earl D. Cook and Zella Critcher Cook. He retired from the United States Postal Service, after 32 years of service. After retirement, he pursued Real Estate. In conjunction with this, he became a land developer in the area. Mr. Cook served in the United States Marine Corp during World War II.

Mr. Cook is survived by one daughter Kelly Cook Hopkins and husband Jeff of Boone; one son Mark Cook and wife Vickie of Boone; three granddaughters Jamie Hopkins, Paige Hopkins and Linzy Cook, all of Boone, and a special niece, Pat Potter and husband Gary of Charlotte. He is also survived by a number of other nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mayo Huneycutt Cook, and one brother Dean Cook.

Funeral services for Mr. Lyle B. Cook will be conducted Sunday afternoon, July 14, 2013, at 3:00 o’clock, at First Baptist Church of Boone. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:30 until 3:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Roy Dobyns. Burial will follow in the Cook Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, from 1:30 until 3:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Rise-Up Renovation Campaign, 375 West King Street, Boone, North Carolina, 28607, or to Medi Home Hospice, PO Box 1357, Newland, North Carolina, 28657.

Mr. Danny Raymond Wilson age 58, of Freeport, Florida, a native and former resident of Watauga County, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013. He was born August 8, 1954 in Boone, North Carolina to Raymond D. Wilson and Mary A. Calloway.

Mr. Wilson was Baptist by faith and lived in Freeport since 1985. After spending four years in the U.S. Air Force in early 1970’s, he worked construction in Northwest, Florida, primarily with M&G and Tindle Enterprises. Danny spent many enjoyable hours fishing, hunting and spending time with friends in this area he had come to call home. He had a great love and respect for the outdoors.

Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Mary Wilson of Boone, North Carolina.

Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife Janice Lynn, daughter Misty Shaw and husband Pat both of Freeport, Florida, sister Ruth Cook and husband Robert of Boone, North Carolina, two brothers Dean Wilson and wife Barbara of Hollywood, Maryland, Dallas Wilson and wife Judy of Virginia Beach, Florida, and nephew Jake Cook and wife Julie, and their daughters, Anna and Natalie, all of Montana.

Visitation services will be held 3:00~5:00 PM, Sunday, July 14, 2013 at Clary-Glenn Freeport Chapel Funeral Home; 150 Highway 20, Freeport, Florida 32439.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM, Monday, July 15, 2013 at Clary-Glenn Freeport Chapel Funeral Home; 150 Highway 20, Freeport, Florida 32439 with Reverend Richard Murray officiating.

Burial will follow at Hatcher Cemetery with military honors.

Floral arrangements are being accepted.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Emerald Coast Cancer Center and Covenant Hospice for their care and consideration during this very difficult time.

Bertha Loretta Coffey Phillips, age 82, of Lexington and a former resident of Blowing Rock passed away Tuesday evening, July 9, 2013 in Lexington. Born December 24, 1930 in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late William Glenn and Annie R. Coffey. Loretta was a member of the Lexington Church of Christ and a homemaker.

She is survived by four children; Virginia Loretta Sherman and husband Roy of Linwood, Nona Mullis and husband Bobby of Stewart, Virginia, Lennie Phillips and wife Linda of Lexington and Dorothy Humphrey and husband Bobby of Lexington, three sisters; Shirley Willard and Linda Sipe of Taylorsville and Lorene Tedder of Statesville, nine grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.     

Funeral services for Bertha Loretta Coffey Phillips will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiating will be Minister Brock Shanks. Burial will follow in the Boone Fork Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 10 until 11 o’clock prior to the service. Wanda Bailey Jones, 60, of Bamboo Road, Boone, passed away Tuesday, July 9th, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir. Born October 30, 1952 in Avery County, she was a daughter of Carl and Jenny Lee Bailey. Mrs. Jones was a member of the Holiness Church in Roan Mountain. Wanda loved her family and cherished time spent with her grandchildren, and her constant companion ‘Bug’.    

She is survived by her husband of l8 years, Clifford Jones; son, Jamie Calloway of Newland; daughter, Amy Calloway Morrison and husband, Dean, of Lenoir; step-sons, Jerry Jones of Vilas and Randall Jones of Boone; grandchildren, Dalton and Montana Calloway, Brittany and Dameon Morrison, and Emily Jones; special sons, Kelly Calloway and his daughter, Kallie, and Gallie Calloway and his children, Gabriel Calloway and Adalaiah Arnett; special granddaughter, Emily Lackey; brothers, Roger Bailey and wife, Linda, Bobby Bailey and wife Betty, and Roy Bailey and wife Darlene, all of Newland; sister-in-law, Gail Bailey of Roan Mountain, TN.; and brother-in-law, Fred Benfield, of Newland.    

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Robert and Charles Bailey; and sisters, Lotus Benfield and Frances Wise.    

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 11, 2013, at 7 PM at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Harold Danner. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:30 until 7 o’clock, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes.     

Graveside services and burial will be conducted Friday, July 12, 2013, at 10 AM at the Bailey Cemetery in Newland.     

Memorial donations may be made to the Wanda Jones Memorial Fund, in care of Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.
