Al Sullivan Kapp (August 11, 1961 – July 14, 2014) 

Mr. Al Sullivan Kapp, age 52, of Meadowhill Drive, Boone, passed away Monday morning, July 14, 2014, at his residence.

Mr. Kapp was born August 11, 1961 in Burlington, North Carolina, a son of the late George and Peggy Hardy Kapp.

He is survived by a son, Adam Kapp and a daughter, Kendell Kapp, both of Lexington, North Carolina.

Mrs. Jewel J. Greene (September 07, 1935 – July 11, 2014)

Jewel Mae Jones Greene, 78, of Burkett Road, Boone, passed away Friday, July 11, 2014 at her home. Born September 7, 1935 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Edd Finley and Elsie Miller Jones. Jewel was a member of South Fork Baptist Church and attended Boone United Methodist Church. She was a wife, mother, and grandmother who dearly loved her family.

Mrs. Greene is survived by her children, Kathy Greene Butler and husband, Richard, Martha Greene Presnell and husband, Don, and Eric Greene, all of Boone; three grandchildren, Chelsey Butler of Boulder, Colorado, Chandler Butler of Avon, and Sophia Presnell of Boone; and her sister, Joann Jones of Todd.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vern Lee Greene; two brothers, Tommy and Roy Jones.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, July 13, 2014, at 3 o”clock at Boone United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Jeff McLean and Rev. Jason Byasee. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 1 until 3 o”clock, prior to services, at the church. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

86, of Jim Burkett Road, Zionville, passed away Friday morning, July 11, 2014, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

Mrs. Burkett was born February 28, 1928, in Watauga County,a daughter of the late Ralph Sylvester Critcher and Ola Leigh Cook Critcher. She was a homemaker, and a member of Zionville Baptist Church.

Mrs. Burkett is survived by a daughter, Jamie Burkett Aldridge and husband, Frank of Foscoe; two granddaughters, Michele Redmond and husband Kelly and Melanie Bradford and husband Alan; one grandson, Matthew Aldridge and wife Jamie; four great-grandchildren, Victoria, Lacey, Maggie and Luke, all of Foscoe; two sisters, Welda Bishop of Lincolnton, and Marcella Anderson of Foscoe; one brother, Jim Critcher and wife Della of Boone; and two sisters-in-law, Charlotte Walls and husband George, and Margaret Oliver of Zionville. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J.M. Burkett; an infant daughter, Sylvia Burkett; one sister, Virginia Miller; five brothers-in-law, Howard Miller, Al Bishop, Bob Anderson, Lewis Burkett and L.C. Oliver; two sisters-in-law, Kate Burkett and Peggy Burkett, and also by a very special friend, James Winebarger.

Funeral services for Dora Critcher Burkett will be conducted Sunday afternoon, July 13, 2014 at 4:00 o”clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Reverend Ricky Critcher. The body will lie in state from 2:30 until 4:00, at the chapel, prior to the service. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, from 2:30 until 4:00 o”clock at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, the family will be at the home of a daughter, Jamie and Frank Aldridge, in the Foscoe Community.

Joe Benny Watson (August 24, 1939 – July 11, 2014) 

Joe Benny Watson, 74, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away Friday, July 11, 2014 after a short illness.

He was born August 24, 1939 in Boone, North Carolina, a son of the late Vandell and Rosie Mae Miller Watson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Watson, and one sister, Ann Parsons.

Joe owned and operated Speights Shoe Service for 40 years until his retirement in 2000. He was a 32nd Degree Master Mason at Myrtle Beach Masonic Lodge #353 and a member of the Omar Shrine of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. He was a past president and active member in the Omar Beachcombers and a board member of the Horry Shrine. He was a founding board member of the Downtown Myrtle Beach Revitalization Committee and former member of the Myrtle Beach Jaycees and Myrtle Beach Corvette Club. Joe was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on the Finance Committee and as an usher. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 until 1960 and was stationed at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Roxyanne Speights Watson, his son, Rusty Watson and fiancee” Annette Swain of Myrtle Beach, his daughter, Robin Watson Payne and husband Michael of Florence, South Carolina, his grandchildren, Blake Watson and Jorden Watson of Bristol, Virginia, Kevin Payne of Houston, Texas; Melanie Payne of Florence, South Carolina, Antoinette Chicchirichi of Myrtle Beach; two great-granddaughters, Haylea Watson and Aly Jo Watson of Bristol, Virginia, a twin brother, Johnny Watson and wife Linda Gail of Lexington, North Carolina, a brother Jim Watson of Archdale, North Carolina, and a sister, Linda Gardner and husband Richard of Lexington, North Carolina. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Joe Benny Watson will be conducted Monday morning, July 14, 2014, at 11:00 o”clock, at First United Methodist Church in Myrtle Beach. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow in Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, from 3:00 until 5:00 o”clock at McMillian-Small Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Omar Beachcombers Shrine Unit, Post Office Box 66, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina 29578.

Joan “Nannie” Stroupe Hoover (October 11, 1932 – July 10, 2014) 

Joan “Nannie” Stroupe Hoover, age 81, of Fieldstream Drive, Boone, was received into God”s loving arms and kingdom glory Thursday evening, July 10, 2014, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Joan was born October 11, 1932 in Charlotte, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Fred Hirst Stroupe, Sr. and Florabell Dean Hawkins Stroupe. She was a 1951 graduate of Central High School and an honor graduate of Central Piedmont Community College with an Early Childhood Development Degree. Joan was a retired Preschool/Kindergarten teacher at Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. She was an active member of Third Presbyterian Church of Charlotte. Joan was a Cub Scout Den Mother and a volunteer at Presbyterian Hospital. Joan was a member of East Mecklenburg Optimist Mrs. Club. During her years in Boone, she was an active member of Perkinsville Baptist Church and was co-owner of WeeRuns Children”s Consignment Boutique from 1992 until 1999.

Joan was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had a deep love for people, cooking, fashion, and decorating. Joan was a kind and giving friend who represented daily the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Joan is survived by her husband, Lloyd Leonidas “Leon” Hoover, Jr. of the home; one daughter, Terri Hoover Reynolds of Boone, and her daughters, Bethany Reynolds Mosteller and husband Chris of Indian Trail, North Carolina, Abbey Reynolds of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and her sons, Brandon Reynolds of Boone, and John-Michael Reynolds and wife Emily Wood Reynolds of Blowing Rock; two sons, Alan Hoover and wife Kathryn of Dublin, Ohio, and their two daughters, Meredith Yonushonis and husband James of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kelsey Hoover of Columbus, Ohio; and their son, Christopher Hoover and wife Christine of Columbus, Ohio, and Reverend Donnie Hoover and wife Valerie of Woodstock, Georgia, and their two daughters, Brittni Hoover and Brianna Hoover, both Woodstock, and their son, Brock Hoover of Woodstock; three great-grandchildren, Clare, James David, and Mary Kathryn, all of Cincinnati; one sister, Carolyn Stroupe Helms of Banner Elk; one brother, Richard “Dickie” Stroupe of Charlotte; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Ann “Dolly” Windle of Huntersville, North Carolina, and one brother-in-law, William “Bill” Hoover and wife Ann of Asheboro, North Carolina. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Bobbie Jo Stroupe Stith, and one brother, Fred Hirst Stroupe, Jr.

Funeral services for Joan “Nannie” Stroupe Hoover will be conducted Sunday afternoon, July 13, 2014, at 5:00 o”clock, at Perkinsville Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 4:00 until 5:00 o”clock. Officiating will be Reverend Seth Norris and Reverend Donnie Hoover. Graveside services and burial will be conducted Monday afternoon, at 1:00 o”clock, at Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, from 4:00 until 5:00 PM, at the church, prior to the service.

Carl Wayne Shultz (August 18, 1955 – July 10, 2014) 

Mr. Carl Wayne Shultz, age 58, of 372 Calloway Road, Boone, the Foscoe Community, died Thursday, July 10, 2014 in Hudson.

Carl was a loving man with an entertaining personality. He gave to others he saw in need, especially those suffering from financial crisis. He enjoyed camping and relished any outdoor adventures. He will be missed by many.

Mr. Shultz is survived by his loving wife, Brenda T. Shultz of the home; one daughter, Lauren Shultz of Wilmington; and two special step-daughters, Sara Oakley and fiance” Douglas Savers of Duncan, British Columbia, Canada and Laura Oakley and special friend Chris Camaret of Banner Elk.

He was preceded in death by his parents William Albert Shultz and Geraldine Beasley Shultz, one sister, Kimberly Shultz, one brother, Mark Shultz, and loyal companion Zack, his Border Collie.

Memorial services for Mr. Carl Wayne Shultz will be conducted Monday afternoon, July 14, 2014, at 3:00 o”clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Reverend Bryon Sexton.
