Donnie Harvey “Don” Harmon, age 53, of 199 Houston Harmon Road, Sugar Grove, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Don was born September 30, 1960 in Watauga County, a son of Houston H. and Margie Ward Harmon. He was a supervisor for Thomasville Furniture in Lenoir, and attended Westside Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Don is survived by his wife, Donna Hicks Harmon of the home; one daughter, Deana Harmon Miller and husband Johnny of Mountain City; three granddaughters, Brook Wilcox and Brittany May, both of Mountain City, and Haley Miller of Blowing Rock; one sister, Rosie Harmon of Sugar Grove, and two brothers, Roger Harmon and wife Norene of Lenoir, and Claude Harmon of Sugar Grove. He is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Donnie Harvey “Don” Harmon will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, January 8, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend David Ward and Reverend Dean Ward. Burial will follow in the Vanderpool Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Ozella Duncan, D. Jan. 4, 2014
Ozella Marie Rash Duncan, age 89, passed away on January 4, 2014 at Margate Health and Rehab in Jefferson, NC.
She was born February 11, 1924 in Jefferson, NC to James Albert (Jim) and Blanche Lewis Rash. Ozella grew up in Buffalo Community. She graduated from Jefferson High School, Jefferson, NC, in 1941. She began working for Glenn L Martin Aircraft, Baltimore, Maryland in 1942 as an Engine Mechanic and took classes for an Aircraft and Engineer License. She was selected and trained as one of seven women to become Martins first all-girl ground test crew to completely check every functioning part of the PBM-3 Navy Patrol Bomber. These women replaced the men who were called into military service during World War II. During this time she earned a pilot’s license for single engine, land.
Ozella married Edgar (Eddie) Thomas Duncan, Jr, June 7, 1945 in Baltimore, MD. They were married for 55 years. Ozella was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church where she served many years as a Sunday School Teacher, Bible School Teacher and baker of wonderful homemade yeast rolls. She worked at Sprague Electric Company; was manager of Newton’s Dept. Store in West Jefferson; she and a friend owned and operated The Fabric Shop in West Jefferson; and she retired from Jefferson Apparel. She was a Volunteer Grandparent at the Ashe County Public Library; a Hospice Volunteer since 1987; she received The 1994 Female Volunteer of the Year for her work with Hospice; was presented the Governor’s Award for Volunteer Work in 1994 by Governor Jim Hunt; volunteered for the American Red Cross at the blood drives;
Ozella was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Duncan; parents Jim and Blanche Rash; two brothers, Estel Rash and Delmer Rash; sister, Grace Rash, and sister-in-law Edna Graham Rash. She is survived by her daughter, Dolly Richardson and husband Rick, Raleigh, NC; sister Mrs. Ruth Clark and husband Bill, Lansing, NC; sister-in-law Mrs. Jean Rash, West Jefferson; Granddaughter Betsi Petway and husband Jeff, Haw River, NC; Step-grandsons Rob Richardson, Valrico, FL; Bill Richardson and wife Angie, Prattville, AL. Six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Ozella Marie Rash Duncan will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, January 7, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Buffalo Baptist Church,619 Central Buiffalo Rd, West Jefferson, NC. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Ken Furches, Reverend Dean Watson, and Reverend Jim Rash. Burial will follow in the Lewis Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Mollie Jean Dancey, D. Jan. 2, 2014
Mrs. Mollie Jean Vines Dancey, age 78, of Boone, passed away Thursday morning January 2, 2014 at Carolinas Medical Center. Born in January 8, 1935 in Watauga County she was a daughter of the late T. C. and Beulah Vines. Jean was a member of Poplar Grove Baptist Church where she served as treasurer for a number of years. She was retired from ASU.
She is survived by one son, Dwayne Dancey and wife Missie of Boone, one daughter, Gina Whittington and husband Randy of Myrtle Beach, SC, two grandchildren; April Larned and husband Stephen and Chase Whittington, six sisters; Carolyn Cook, Pauline Hicks, Betty Smitherman, Shirley Johnson, Mildred Kurek and husband Kenny and Nancy Glenn and husband Gale, and one brother, Pete Vines and wife Jean. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Dancey, and two sisters, Mary Lou Carroll and Reba Robinson.
Funeral services for Mollie Jean Vines Dancey will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o\’clock at Poplar Grove Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Chuck Campbell and Rev. Herbert McCoy. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Poplar Gove Baptist Church, 1228 Poplar Grove Road South, Boone, NC 28607.

Charles Moody, D. Jan. 2, 2014
Charles Cline Moody, 78, of Locust Gap, Road, Vilas, the Bethel community, passed away Thursday morning, January 2, 2014. Born March 31, 1935 in Watauga County, he was a son of Charles and Letha Norris Moody. Mr. Moody was a retired inspector at Singer Furniture in Lenoir.
Mr. Moody was a ‘Great Daddy’ who loved and provided for his family. He was a humorous man who enjoyed sharing laughter and spending time hunting and fishing.
Mr. Moody is survived by his wife of 61 years, Yvonne Main Moody; four daughters, Marlene Moody of Vilas, Debra Howell of Wilkesboro, Jacqueline Moody of the home, and Nicole Yates of Mountain City, TN.; three sons, Charles Edgar Moody, Douglas Wayne Moody and wife, Angelia, and William Keith Moody and wife, Phyllis, all of Lenoir; twelve grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Madge Cornett and Bertha Moody, both of Vilas.
He was preceded in death by one son, Terry Moody; one daughter, Darlene Moody; grandson, Brandon Moody; three brothers, Gordon, Fred and Clint Moody; two sisters, Mabel Mixon and Laura Moody; and his parents.
Funeral services for Charles Cline Moody will be private.

Oscar Cornette, D. Jan. 2, 2014
Oscar Dean “Bud” Cornette, age 78, of 230 Bentley Road, Sugar Grove, died Thursday, January 2, 2014, at Watauga Medical Center.
Mr. Cornette was born July 1, 1935 in Watauga County, a son of the late Marion Columbus Cornette and Ida Dotson Cornette. He was a retired heavy machine operator for Vulcan Materials.
Mr. Cornette is survived by his wife Eloise Hodges Cornette of the home; three daughters, Beckie Taylor and husband Dale, of Port Orange, Florida, Jackie Tesh and husband Mike of Sugar Grove, and Karen Broome and husband John of Wilkesboro; one granddaughter, Nicole Tesh of Virginia; three grandsons, Chad Taylor and wife Tara of Port Orange, Florida, Kinston Broome of Wilkesboro, and Daniel Tesh of Jacksonville, NC; five great-grandchildren, Kaley Jo Taylor, Gage Taylor, Anthony Tesh, Abigail Tesh, and Ivan Tesh, and one sister, Ruth Isaacs and husband Kenneth, of Boone.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Russell Cornette.
Funeral services for Mr. Oscar Dean “Bud” Cornette will be conducted Sunday afternoon, January 5, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Gordon Noble. Burial will follow in Piney Grove Cemetery.

J.D. Phillips, D. Jan. 1, 2014
Mr. J.D. Phillips, age 103, of Boone, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone.
Mr. Phillips was born February 20, 1910 in Ashe County, a son of the late Benjamin Harrison Phillps and Julia Woodruff Phillips. He was a retired owner and builder of apartment rentals. Mr. Phillips was of the Baptist Faith, a Mason and Shriner.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Brona Elledge Phillips of the home; three daughters, Mary P. Moretz of Boone, J. Ann Mikeal of Aurora, Colorado, and June P. South and husband Frank of Boone. He is also survived by six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, four great great-grandchildren, two nieces, and one nephew.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Tom Phillips, and two sons-in-law, Max Mikeal and Cecil Moretz.
Funeral services for J.D. Phillips will be conducted Saturday afternoon, January 4, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:30 until 1:45 PM. Officiating will be Reverend Dr. Larry Young and Reverend Gary Watson. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

Pauline Blalock Sudderth, D. Dec. 31, 2013
Pauline Blalock Sudderth, age 88, of East Mountain View Drive, Johnson City, a native of Avery County, passed away Tuesday afternoon, December 31, 2013, at Broadmore Senior Living in Johnson City, Tennessee.
Mrs. Sudderth was born September 1, 1925 in Avery County, a daughter of the late Paul and Rhona Gragg Blalock. She was a retired postmaster for the Montezuma Post Office and a member of Aaron Baptist Church.
Mrs. Sudderth is survived by two daughters, Sara Buchanan and husband Dante, and Jeanie Williamson and husband Rich Molnar, all of Newland; four granddaughters, Betsy Austin, Rachel Buchanan, Suzanne Cabera, and Scarlett Woody; one grandson, Chris Smith, one sister, Margaret Sudderth of Montezuma, and three brothers, Jerry Blalock of Myrtle Beach, Bruce Blalock of Rome, Georgia, and Lewie Blalock of Linville. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Sudderth, and one brother, Charles Blalock.
Funeral services for Pauline Blalock Sudderth will be conducted Thursday afternoon, January 2, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Aaron Baptist Church in Montezuma. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Dr. Jamie Johnson. Burial will follow in the Montezuma Cemetery.
The family will receive friends, at the church fellowship hall, following the funeral service.

Charles Walker, D. Dec. 31, 2013
GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME, AND ALL THE TIME, GOD IS GOOD! In HIS infinite mercy and grace, God carried his faithful servant, Charles Garrett Walker, Jr., to his eternal home on December 31, 2013. Betty, the love of his life for 48 years and also known as “Dear”, was by his side, as well as family and close friends. Born October 6, 1944, the only child of Charles G. and Melba J. Walker, Sr., his life was filled with titles and responsibilities, love and laughter, and more importantly his Lord.
Charles graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1962 and from Campbell College in 1965. His working career was centered in Goldsboro, NC, during which he owned Walker Realty and Walker Construction, and he was an owner and partner of GMAC Town & Country Real Estate. He previously served as President of the Goldsboro Board of Realtors and the National Association of Home Builders for Wayne County, and he was a multiple recipient of Realtor of the Year Award and Home Builder of the Year for Wayne County. He also served as Charter President of the Adamsville Lions Club while residing in Goldsboro. During his retirement years in Boone, Charles enjoyed golf, going to the beach, working with the college students at ASU, and driving a bus for AppalCart. One of his favorite stories was how he got the bus stuck in a turn, which was not surprising to his frequent passengers and family. We tried to tell him he couldn’t drive. Charles always laughed his way through goof ups, loved practical jokes, and was quite the character at his family reunions. No one remained a stranger to Charles, and everyone along his path has a “Charles Story” to tell. Yet, it was his biblical character that will always be remembered by all. Charles never cared about the titles, and he certainly didn’t care about computers and social media. He was about true relationships, his family, and his work for the Lord, which included serving as a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, and Chairman of the Board of Deacons for both Madison Avenue Baptist Church in Goldsboro and Greenway Baptist Church in Boone. He was involved in many mission trips with Samaritan’s Purse. Charles most recently served as a faithful member of Perkinsville Baptist Church. It didn’t matter what hat Charles wore, what company he owned and operated, or whatever award he received, he just wanted to save people and bring them to Christ. It was his mission and his legacy. As he enters an eternal New Year with his Lord, he would want you to enter a new life by accepting HIS grace. Renew your life and come join his party!
Charles is survived by his wife, Betty Faye Blalock Walker; his parents, Charles G. and Melba J. Walker, Sr., of Winston-Salem; son, Charles G. “Garry” Walker, III, and wife Amy, of Morrisville; son, S. Brian Walker and wife Theresa, of Swansboro; grandchildren, Charles Garrett Walker, IV, Megan Wrenn and Mya Wrenn; very close friends, Mitch and Nelda Mishoe of Milton, Florida; his much beloved and large Blalock family, and his many cousins. His dog, Bogey, will certainly miss his master.
The visitation and funeral will be held Saturday, January 4, at Perkinsville Baptist Church located at 274 Jefferson Road, Boone, NC, with the Reverend Seth Norris presiding. The visitation will begin at 12:30 pm, and the funeral will be held at 2 pm. A special thanks to Austin & Barnes Funeral Home & Crematory for helping the family with arrangements.

Al Barham, D. Dec. 28, 2013
Al Barham 78, of Boone, died on December 28, 2013 at home. Born June 4, 1935 in Livingston County, IL, Al was the oldest of the late Harb and Lucy Barham’s 7 children.
To know Al was to love him. He loved people and they loved him back. Always proud of his Korean War service, he cherished the life long friends he made there. An active member of the Bonita Springs, FL, Lions Club, until moving to NC in 1998, Al enjoyed serving his community, working on projects and committees, holding numerous offices and ultimately was honored with the prestigious Melvin Jones Award.
Mr. Barham is survived by his loving wife of almost 41 years Susan, and son Jim, of Boone; daughter, Sharon and grandson, Mark, of Illinois; siblings Mary Rodneff, Linda Oliver, and Kenny Barham of Florida, Jan Massey of Tennessee, and numerous wonderful relatives. He is preceded in death by siblings Ron Barham and Shirley Hutchinson.
Memorial services will be held at a future date in Boone, Florida and Illinois.
