Mrs. Garland Rivenbark Carr, age 95, of Green Street, Blowing Rock, and formerly of Wallace, passed away Monday, January 20, 2014 at her home. 

Born December 20, 1918 in Duplin County, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Fannie Ezzell Rivenbark. Mrs. Carr was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Rose Hill, and retired from the Wallace Elementary School as a teacher and librarian. 

Surviving Mrs. Carr are her son, Joe Carr and wife, Judy, of Blowing Rock; two grandsons, Myron Carr and wife, Jessica, of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and Jonathan Carr and wife, Kate, of Durango, Colorado; three great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Rylie Carr and Skylar Carr; three sisters, Carolyn Brinkley and Emily Wells, both of Wallace, and Mary Lillie Matthews, of Surf City; and her special caregiver, Yvonne Brown. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Columbus Carr; and one brother, Chapman Rivenbark. 

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday morning, January 25, 2014, at 10 o’clock at the Golden Grove Cemetery in Kenansville.

Funeral services for Garland Rivenbark Carr will be conducted Saturday afternoon, January 25, 2014, at 2 o’clock at the First Baptist Church in Rose Hill. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 1 until 2 o’clock, one hour prior to services, at the church. Burial will follow at Golden Grove Cemetery in Kenansville.

Mrs. Pauline Ethel ‘Polly’ Ray, 88, of Ashland, Kentucky, and formerly of Blowing Rock, passed away Saturday, January 18th at Woodland Oakes in Ashland. Pauline was born June 11, 1925 in Mena, Arkansas and was raised in Mena and Hendersonville, NC. She was a daughter of the late John Burton and Grace Bowen Lance. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Hugh L. Ray in 2002, her son, Mark Edward Ray in 2013, five brothers and three sisters. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. 

Pauline was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ashland and in Boone. She was very active in both churches having served as a Sunday school teacher and many other duties and church activities. She also served on the Boyd County Medical Auxiliary and with the Friends of the Children. Pauline was a registered nurse and the first in her family to obtain post-secondary education. She trained at the Baptist Hospital in Memphis, TN.

Survivors include daughter, Jane Ray Ehrie and husband, Dr. Michael G. Ehrie, Jr., of Ashland, Ky.; grandchildren, Margaret Bowen, Ehrie, Michael G. Ehrie III, Stephanie Lauren Ray, and Elizabeth Lance Ray; and great-grandchildren, Michael Ehrie IV, Ava Rose Ehrie, and Adelie Murray. 

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 25, 2014, at 3:30 PM at the First Baptist Church in Boone, officiated by Rev. Ed Talley and Rev. Roy Dobyns. The family will receive friends 2:30 until 3:30, prior to services, at the church. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church, 375 West King Street, Boone, NC 28607, or to the First Baptist Church, l701 Winchester Avenue, Ashland, KY 41101.

Martha “Tudey” Ward Davis, age 59, of Rominger Road, Banner Elk, passed away Saturday morning, January 18, 2014.

Tudey was born January 26, 1954 in Davidson County, the daughter of Clay and Hazel Mae Mast Ward. She was a private duty nurse.

Tudey is survived by two daughters, Trixie Dancy and husband Steve of Granite Falls, and Holly Proctor and husband Scott of Banner Elk; one son, Billy Walters and wife Stephanie of Hickory; three granddaughters, Robin Proctor, Lillian Dancy, and Madison Walters; three grandsons, Christopher Proctor, Kace Dancy, and John Walters, and one brother, James Ward and wife Zola of Sugar Grove.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Rosemary Elizabeth Walters; one grandson, Baby Dancy, and one brother, John Clayton Ward.

Memorial services for Martha “Tudey” Ward Davis will be conducted Wednesday morning, January 22, 2014, at 11:00 o’clock, at Zion Hill Baptist Church. Officiating will be and Reverend Quincy Norris and Pastor Brian Beaver.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

Ted Nathan Hicks, age 59, of Norwood Hollow Road, Banner Elk, passed away Friday morning, January 17, 2014, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

Ted was born March 2, 1954 in Avery County, a son of Rosa Violet Harmon Hicks and the late Ray Hicks. He was a farmer on his own farm and was of the Baptist Faith.

In addition to his mother, Ted is survived by one brother, Leonard Hicks and wife Linda Kay of Piney Flats, Tennessee; three sisters, Dorothy Jean Odom and Kathy Tribble and husband Kenneth, all of Elizabethton, Tennessee, and Juanita Simerly and husband Jerry of Hampton Tennessee; an aunt, Nell Presnell of Banner Elk; three nephews, Troy Simerly and Shane Simerly of Hampton, and Daniel Hicks of Piney Flats, and one niece, Ashley Robinson and husband Scott of Piney Flats. He is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services for Ted Nathan Hicks will be conducted Monday afternoon, January 20, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Richard Trivette. Burial will follow in the Hicks Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

James Ernest Lafferty, age 68, of Old Turnpike East, Banner Elk, passed away Thursday evening, January 16, 2014, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.

James was born November 9, 1945 in Avery County, a son of the late Ernest Linwood Lafferty and Nancy Norris Lafferty. He was diesel mechanic and equipment operator for Eggers Construction in Banner Elk.

James is survived by two daughters, Gina Jones and husband Dwayne of China Grove, North Carolina, and Lisa Crouch and husband Gary of Hamptonville, North Carolina; one granddaughter, Whitney Jones of China Grove; three grandsons, Michael Lafferty and Kevin Lafferty, both of Winston-Salem, and Landon Jones of China Grove; one brother, William Lafferty of Banner Elk, and one sister, Louise Lafferty Leasure and husband Buddy of Greensboro.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jimmy Lafferty, Jr., and one brother, John Elbert Lafferty.

Funeral services for James Ernest Lafferty will be conducted Sunday afternoon, January 19, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Gordon Noble. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Dawn Webb Trivette, age 76, of Guy Ford Road, Sugar Grove, passed away Wednesday morning, January 15, 2014 at home. Born July 8, 1937 in Grand Island, New York, she was a daughter of the late Frank E. and Leila Rogers Webb. Dawn was retired from Appalachian State University where she worked in building services. 

She is survived by two sons; Timothy Trivette and wife Christine and Brian Trivette and wife Janie all of Sugar Grove, four grandsons; Joel Trivette and Nathan Trivette of Sugar Grove, Timothy “T. J.” Trivette of Boone, and Brandon Trivette and wife Heather of Hendersonville, one great grandson; Xander Trivette of Hendersonville, one step grandson, Brian Storie of Mountain City, one step granddaughter, Angela Combs and husband Ken of Mountain City, one sister, Arvilla Kendzierski of Grand Island, New York, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John Trivette, one sister, Joyce Beland, and two brothers; Julias Stenis and La Verne Stenis. 

Memorials services for Dawn Webb Trivette will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Chad Cole. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 o’clock until 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Margaret Hollars ‘Peggy’ Miller, 71, of Blackberry Road, Lenoir, passed away Monday, January 13th 2014, at her home. Born May 21, 1942 in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of Horace and Ruth Trexler Hollars. Peggy’s love in life was her family, especially enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. One of her favorite hobbies was tending to her flower gardens. Peggy was known as ‘Mamaw’ to her many friends and customers at various Boone convenience stores where she was employed as a clerk for many years. 

She is survived by her husband, Kent Miller; son, Jeff Miller of Lenoir; three grandchildren, Aaron Messer and Michelle Greene and husband Jason, both of Boone, and Nicole Messer and friend, Joseph Stevenson, of Lenoir; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Greene and J. J. Stephens, both of Lenoir; and her sister, Margaret Cochran of Tennessee. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Krystal Messer.

Memorial services will be conducted Thursday, January 16th, at 7:30 PM at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. William Adams and Rev. Charles E. McKinney. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 until 7:30, prior to service, at Austin & Barnes. Graveside services, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, will be private.

Myra “Bonnie” Reece Huneycutt, age 74, of Collingwood Drive, Charlotte, a native and former resident of Watauga County, passed away Monday, January 13, 2014.

Bonnie was born March 14, 1939 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Vaughn and Madge Williams Reece. She was a retired nurse for Charlotte Urology, and a member of Mabel Baptist Church.

Bonnie is survived by a special friend, Steve Greene of Charlotte; one son, Joe Proffitt of Zionville, and his friend Ronda Thompson of Hendersonville, North Carolina; one daughter, Susie Isaacs and husband Mike of Zionville; two grandsons, Brad Isaacs and wife Sara of Zionville, and Chad Isaacs and wife Sarah of Vilas; two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Jada Isaacs; one sister, Jane Vannoy and husband Jay of Winston-Salem, and two nephews, John and Jeffery Vannoy, both of Winston-Salem.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Huneycutt.

Funeral servies for Myra “Bonnie” Reece Huneycutt will be conducted Thursday afternoon, January 16, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Mabel Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Derick Wilson and Reverend Frank Johnson. Entombment will follow in the Zionville Baptist Church Garden Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service. At other times, friends may call at the home of the son, Joe Proffitt, 7097 Old Highway 421, Zionville.
