Jeanette Welch, D. Feb. 17, 2014
Mrs. Jeanette Welch Johnson, age 62, of 111 Church Hollow Road, Boone, the Foscoe Community, died Monday, February 17, 2014, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Jeanette was born July 29, 1951 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Authur Marion Welch and Irene Townsend Welch. She was employed by Shadowline for many years, but most recently was Manager for Creekside Group Home through Watauga Opportunities, where she touched the lives of many people.
Jeanette was a lifelong member of Holy Communtion Lutheran Church and served faithfully. She had a special place in her heart for the Sunday School Program, which she served for many years.
Jeanette’s passion was her family, and most of all her grandchildren. She had a heart that was happiest when she knew she was helping someone else. Jeanette enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow and spoiling them. She will be missed by many.
Jeanette is survived by her loving husband and companion of 44 years, Hughie L. Johnson of the home; two sons, Kevin S. Johnson and wife Rita of Granite Falls, and Brian C. Johnson and wife Veronica of Boone; three granddaughters, Jennifer Johnson of Granite Falls and her fiance Nat Auten of Hickory, Brooke Johnson of Granite Falls, and Sophie Johnson of Boone; one grandson, Brock Johnson of Granite Falls; two brothers, William David Welch and wife Marilyn of Zionville, and Charles “Eddie” Welch and wife Betty of Boone; one sister, Pat Welch Townsend and husband J.B. of Boone, and her mother-in-law, Daisy Johnson of Banner Elk. She is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Jeanette Welch Johnson will be conducted Friday afternoon, February 21, 2014, at 3:00 o’clock, at Holy Communion Lutheran Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 2:00 until 3:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor David Mielke. Burial will follow in Holy Communion Lutheran Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Communion Lutheran Church Education Fund, 1525 Clarks Creek Road, Banner Elk, North Carolina, 28604.

Shirley Story Chandler, D. Feb. 17, 2014
Shirley Story Chandler, age 66, of Westbrook Street N.W., Lenoir, passed away Monday evening, February 17, 2014, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.
Shirley was born August 27, 1947 in Caldwell County, a daughter of the late Olin and Faye Rector Story. She was a retired assistant director of the City of Morganton Municipal Auditorium.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Melvin W. Chandler of the home; one brother, Gene Story and wife Jeanne of Hendersonville; one sister, Judy Phillips of Lenoir; one nephew, Robert W. Phillips, III of Lenoir, and one niece, Sherry Gorman and husband Todd of Hickory.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a great-niece, Lexus Phillips.
Funeral services for Shirley Story Chandler will be conducted Friday afternoon, February 21, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Laurel Fork Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Burial will follow in Laurel Fork Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Evans Funeral Service in Lenoir. The family will also receive friends Friday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at Laurel Fork Baptist Church, prior to the service.

Willis Huffman, D. Feb. 17, 2014
Willis ‘Dean’ Huffman, 73, of Huffman Road, Vilas, passed away Monday morning, February 17, 2014 at his home. Born April 14, l940 in Watauga County, he was a son of Jessie and Dessie Miller Huffman. Mr. Huffman was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. The love of his life was his wife and family. Dean loved spending quiet time reading his Bible and enjoying all outdoor activities, including all aspects of farming.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Hazel Wilson Huffman; two sons, Tony Huffman and wife, Joan, of Mountain City, TN., and Tim Huffman of Vilas; two daughters, Melinda Watson and husband, Jeff, of Fort Blackmore, Va., and Renee Lipford and husband, Shannon, of Newland. Six grandchildren, one great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Kermit, David and Dan Huffman; and two sisters, Anna Mae Rominger and Lonie Humphrey.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 21st at 2 PM at Beaver Dam Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Burl Greer. Burial will follow in the Lower Beaver Dam Cemetery.

Wayne Hampton, D. Feb. 15, 2014
Wayne Houston Hampton, age 76, of 394 Critcher Road, Boone, passed away Saturday afternoon, February 15, 2014, at Watauga Medical Center.
Wayne was born April 25, 1937 in Watauga County, a son of the late Darius Sebastian Hampton and Lena Carroll Hampton. He was the retired owner and operator of Hampton’s Body Shop and Wrecker Service in Boone, for over 50 years. Wayne was a member and deacon of Three Forks Baptist Church in Boone.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joyce Hartley Hampton of the home; two sons, Dwayne S. Hampton and wife Tonya, and Toby L. Hampton and wife Ellen, all of Boone; four granddaughters, Jessica Stansberry and husband Scott of Sugar Grove, Alicia Townsend and husband Mitchell of Boone, Amanda Critcher and husband Patrick of Greensboro, and Leah Hampton of Boone; one grandson, Andrew Hampton of Boone; three great-granddaughters, Haleigh Lawson of Sugar Grove, Kayla Townsend and Alexa Townsend, both of Boone; one great-grandson, Hunter Townsend of Boone; two sisters, Juella Francis and husband David of Johnson City, and Muriel Jean Jones and husband J.B. of Boone, and one brother, Denver Hampton and wife Avis of Huntersville, one aunt Virginia Carroll, of Boone. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Wayne Houston Hampton will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, February 19, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor David Ricker, Reverend Ernest Richards, and Reverend James McKinney. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
The family receive friends Tuesday evening, from 5:30 until 9:00 o’clock, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. At other times, friends may call at the residence, 394 Critcher Road, Boone.

Pauline Goulds, D. Feb. 14, 2014
Mrs. Pauline Eggers Sherwood Goulds, age 88, of Highway 421 South, Deep Gap, passed away Friday morning, February 14, 2014 at home. Born June 7, 1925 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Roby Eggers and Sallie Bumgardner Eggers. Pauline was retired from Blue Ridge Shoe and was a member of Highland View Baptist Church.
She is survived by two nieces, Darlene Thomas and Janis Abel, and her caregivers, R. D. and Betsy Watson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband Rev. Gene L. Sherwood, her second husband, Wright Goulds, a daughter, Teresa Sue Sherwood, two brothers, Ernest and Dwight Eggers and one sister, Mozella Eggers Thomas.
Funeral services for Mrs. Pauline Goulds will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Sherrill Wellborn. Burial will follow in the Zionville Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 o’clock until 3 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Edith Saylor Greer, D. Feb. 12, 2014
Edith Louise Saylor Greer, 89, of Deep Gap, passed away peacefully in her home on February 12th, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jones Greer. Edith is survived by her daughter, Sylvia Riddell of Henderson, NV; her son, Edward Greer and his wife, Nancy, of Deep Gap; seven grandchildren, Michael Riddell and wife, Shelia,of Troutman, Sandra Riddell of Henderson, NV, and Stephanie, Sharon, Andrew, Jo-el and Christy Greer, all of Deep Gap; 2 great-granddaughters and 8 great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Thursday afternoon, February 20th, at 4 o’clock at Three Forks Baptist Church. A pot-luck dinner will follow services in the church fellowship hall.
