Juanita McQueen Mackey, age 76, of 211 Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Watauga Medical Center in Boone.

Juanita was born August 25, 1936, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Ebb and Mollie Grimes McQueen. She was a retired showroom designer for Broyhill Furniture and a proud caregiver for the elderly.

Juanita is survived by two daughters, Lora M. Skattebo of Boone, and Paula M. Ketchum of Boone; two granddaughters, Mariah Skattebo and Alonha Juanita Ketchum, both of Boone; two grandsons, Duwan Mackey and Damien Mackey, both of Boone, and two great-grandsons, Darius Mackey and Dalton Mackey, both of Boone.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Bertha Horton, and two brothers, Jack McQueen and Richard Grimes.

Funeral services for Juanita McQueen Mackey will be conducted Saturday afternoon, February 16, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Juanita Melton and Reverend Roger Horton. Burial will follow in Clarissa Hill Cemetery in Boone.

The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

William L. “Buster” Norwood, age 77, of 187 Shook Road, Banner Elk, passed away Tuesday evening, February 12, 2013, at Watauga Medical Center.

Mr. Norwood was born January 16, 1936 in Avery County, a son of the late Chester and Sudie Ruppard Norwood. He was a retired carpenter and builder for Shook’s Construction Company. Mr. Norwood was a faithful member of Watauga Baptist Church.

Mr. Norwood is survived by his wife, Betty Shook Norwood of the home; two daughters, Linda Warren and husband Kevin of Lenoir, and Melissa Miller and husband Bobby of Banner Elk; one son, William Norwood of Banner Elk; three granddaughters, Elesha White of Whittier, California, Jessica Norwood of Gaffney, South Carolina, and Chelsey Norwood of Deep Gap; five grandsons, Jason Norwood of Gaffney, Jeffery Norwood of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Dustin Miller, Travis Miller, and Chad Miller, all of Banner Elk; his great-grandchildren, Abigail Norwood, Madison Crow, Landon Norwood, and Jacob Norwood; one sister, Lola Jean Prittchard and husband Paul of Morganton; three brothers, Junior Norwood and wife Ethel of Newland, Jimmy Norwood and his friend Jean of the Foscoe Community, and Jerry Norwood of Banner Elk; one sister-in-law, Mary Brown of Morganton, and two brothers-in-law, David Shook and wife Lucy, and Johnny Townsend, all of Banner Elk. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ida Mae Sword.

Funeral services for William L. “Buster” Norwood will be conducted Friday afternoon, February 15, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock, at Watauga Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor R.D. Watson, Pastor Jeff Fox, and Reverend Billy McGuire. Burial will follow in Watauga Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Watauga Baptist Church.

Quentin J. Wheeler, age 88, of 142 Snowdrift Lane, Boone, passed away Saturday morning, February 9, 2013, at his home.

Mr. Wheeler was born November 24, 1924 in Watauga County, a son of the late Simon and Ola Hayes Wheeler. He was a retired machinist for Bernhardt Furniture for 32 years. Mr. Wheeler was a member and former deacon of Three Forks Baptist Church in Boone.

Mr. Wheeler is survived by his wife of 65 years, Faye Coffey Wheeler of the home, and one daughter, Dinia Wheeler of the home. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Harvey Wheeler, and one sister, Doris Wheeler Franks.

Funeral services for Quentin J. Wheeler will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, February 12, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Lynn Powers and Reverend David Ricker. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service. At other times, friends may call at the home, 142 Snowdrift Lane, Boone.

Mr. William C. “Bill” Critcher, age 88, of 4295 Bamboo Road, Boone, passed away Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Watauga Medical Center.

Mr. Critcher was born August 8, 1924 in Watauga County, a son of the late Fred R. and Lillie Mae Hartley Critcher. He was a retired farmer and produce company operator. Mr. Critcher was a member and past deacon of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Mr. Critcher is survived by two sons, Gary Critcher and wife Linda, and Basil Critcher and wife Carol, all of Boone; one granddaughter, Megan Elizabeth Critcher and her special friend Darren Bebe of Boone; three grandsons, Matthew Critcher, Benjamin Critcher, and Gary Church and wife Amy, all of Boone; two great-granddaughters, Emily and Haley Church, both of Boone; a special dear friend, Edna Aldrich of Palm City, Florida and Blowing Rock; five brothers, Carl Critcher and wife Ethel, of Boone, Dwight Critcher and wife Virginia of Deep Gap, Tommy Critcher and wife Robbie of Boone, Sammy Critcher and wife Gloria of Deep Gap, and Ray Critcher and wife Joan of Boone, and three sisters, Margaret Cook and husband Roger of Boone, Joanne Welborn and husband Jack of Deep Gap, and Faye Castor of Cary. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Ford Critcher; two sisters, Selma Hollar and Mary Cook; one brother, Jerry Critcher; an infant brother, Don Critcher; one sister-in-law, Faye Ford Storie; four brothers-in-law, Ledford Cook, Lige Hollar, David Castor, and Clark Storie, and his father and mother-in-law, Stacey and Martha Harmon Ford.

Funeral services for William C. “Bill” Critcher will be conducted Tuesday morning, February 12, 2013, at 11:00 o’clock, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Bud Russell, Dr. Greg Heisler, and Dr. Dan Meyer. Entombment will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends Monday afternoon, from 5:30 until 8:30 PM, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Roscoe E. Brown, age 85, of 195 Phillip Road, Elk Park, died Thursday, February 7, 2013, at Life Care Center in Banner Elk.

Mr. Brown was born March 10, 1927 in Avery County, a son of the late George and Rosetta Guy Brown. He was a member of Beech Valley Baptist Church, where he was a deacon over 40 years, and an adult Sunday School teacher for 30 years.

Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Pauline Presnell Johnson Brown of the home; three step-daughters, Lola Hicks and husband Jerry of Beech Creek, Leila Klos and husband John of Barker, New York, and Paulette Isaacs and husband Dennis of Elk Park; one step-son, Dallas Ward and wife Diane of Newfane, New York; five grandsons, James Horner and wife Nicki of Newfane, D.J. Ward of Lockport, New York, Brandon Klos of Newfane, Joshua Isaacs and Daniel Isaacs, both of Elk Park; two granddaughters, April Wilson and husband Scott, and Karrie Klos and husband Lalo, both of Newfane, and two brothers, Junior Brown of Hickory, and Raymond Brown and wife Margaret of Elk Park.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ellen Presnell Brown; one son, Steven Brown, and one brother, Dwight Brown.

Funeral services for Roscoe E. Brown will be conducted Sunday afternoon, February 10, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock, at Beech Valley Baptist Church. Officiating will be Reverend Bill Warren and Reverend Quincy Norris. The body will lie in state, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to service. Burial with military honors, provided by American Legion Post 130, will follow at Beech Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Hampton Funeral Service, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM, Saturday evening. At other times the family will be at the residence 195 Phillip Road, Elk Park.

Mrs. Judith Kilgour “Judy” Greer, age 70, of Farthing Street, Boone, passed away Thursday evening, February 7, 2013 at Watauga Medical Center.

Born August 24, 1942 in Braddock, Pennsylvania, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Thelma Mulholland Kilgour. Judy was a member of Rutherwood Baptist Church and was retired from TRW.

She is survived by her husband; Robert M. “Bob” Greer, two daughters; Ladonna Shore and husband J. C. of Blowing Rock, and Robin Simpson of Gainesville, Florida, three grandchildren; Ryan Harris of Columbus, Ohio, Brittany Purvis and husband Josh of Gainesville, and Ashley Craig and husband Matt of Blowing Rock, one great granddaughter; Natalie Purvis, two sisters; JoAnn Hicks of Waynesboro, Tennessee and Dorothy “Dolly” Cushman of Stuart, Florida. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one sister; Patricia Groce.

Funeral services for Mrs. Judy Greer will be conducted Sunday evening at 7 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Seth Norris. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 6 o’clock until 7 o’clock. James Robert “Jim” Poole, III, age 70, of McCauley Lane, Boone, died Wednesday evening, February 6, 2013, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation.

Mr. Poole was born April 5, 1942 in Robeson County, a son of the late James Robert Poole, II and Kate Lucinda Fisher Poole. He served in the United States Air Force for twelve years, was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Boone. Mr. Poole was a retired United States Postal Service City Mail Carrier, in Boone, for 30 years.

Mr. Poole is survived by his wife, Dr. Marye Hacker of the home; two daughters, Cathy Poole of Boone, and Laura Poole and husband Eric Coker of Durham; two granddaughters, Sarah Greaves of Boone, and Joanna Coker of Durham; one grandson, Gabriel Greaves of Boone; one sister, Cinda McGuinn and husband Doug of Boone, and one nephew, David McGuinn of Boone.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Poole, and a nephew Jamie McGuinn.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Boone. Officiating will be The Reverend Cynthia Banks. Military rites, provided by American Legion Post 130, will follow the memorial service.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

Vernie O’Dell Phillips, 91, of Big Hill Road, Boone, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at his home.

Born August 3, 1921 in Ashe County, he was a son of John Franklin and Lillie Viola Eldreth Phillips. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp, during WWII. Mr. Phillips was a member of Meat Camp Baptist Church. After retirement from Watauga Medical Center, he spent his time doing what he loved, fishing and tending his vegetable gardens, but most of all, loving his family.

Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Marilyn Smith Phillips; son, Steve Phillips and wife, Sandra, of Boone; daughter, Judy Johnson and husband, David, of North Wilkesboro; brother, Russell Phillips of Oxford, PA; two sisters, Peggy Mabe and husband, Charles, of Oxford, PA, and Velma Phillips of Hudson. Ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Frank Phillips; two brothers, Paul and Robert Gene Phillips; and two sisters, Connie Keys and Essie Stoker.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, February 10, 2013, at 2:30 at Meat Camp Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Mike Townsend and Rev. Herbert McCoy. Burial, with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post #130 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5 until 7o’clock at Austin & Barnes.

Dorothy Beier Dunteman, age 85, of Friendship Church Road, the Aho community, Boone, died Tuesday afternoon, February 5, 2013, at the Davant Rehab & Extended Care Facility in Blowing Rock. Born March 13, 1927 in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the daughter of Erwin and Amelia Murdock Beier. Mrs. Dunteman was a member of Laurel Fork Baptist Church where she attended Adult Sunday school classes and the Exploring Christianity programs.

Mrs. Dunteman is survived by her goddaughter, Jill Burns and husband Chuck of West Harrison, Indiana; godson, Michael Dieckmann and wife Karen, of Cincinnati, Ohio; nephew, Grey Collum and wife Betty, of Dublin, Ohio; and niece, Gina Swisher and husband Brian, of Columbus, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Dunteman.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, February 9, 2013, at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Boyd Coffey and Rev. Lonnie Barnes. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 o’clock, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Robert Myers Bumbaugh, D. Feb. 5, 2013

Robert Myers Bumbaugh was born on June 8, 1918, and died February 5, 2013. He was the son of William and Annetta Bumbaugh, both deceased.

He graduated From Swatara high School, Oberlin, Pa in 1937, and received the highest honors in Radiology from the Franklin School in Philadelphia, PA. Additional training was received at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA and Bowman Gray School of Inhalation Therapy.

He served as a cadet in the US Merchant Marines and was a World War II Navy Veteran. Having served in active duty from 1941-1946, his decorations included the Combat Action Ribbon, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign with 4 battle stars, American Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.

From 1946 to retirement in 1981, he served as Senior Chief Petty Officer in the Naval Reserves in Greensboro, NC, being one of four individuals to have received this title. From this he was the recipient of the Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal with three stars. Mr. Bumbaugh came to Boone as Superintendent of the IRC pilot plant in 1953. The community will long remember his dedication to the health and welfare of its people through his serving has Chairman of the Building Committee for the Watauga Hospital that opened in 1966.

He was Director of the Inhalation Therapy Department and Physicians Assistant at Blowing Rock Hospital from 1971-1991 and was the Medical Assistant to the Watauga Surgical Group before his retirement in 2002. He was a member of the Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church, the American Legion, VFW and DAV.

Preceding him in death was his only sister, Ruth Amundson and his devoted faithful wife, Nancy Bruening Bumbaugh. His survivors include Jerry L. Bumbaugh, Billy Karl, Andrew O. McEachern III, Phyllis Shore Bumbaugh and Liggett Cato; grandchildren: Felicia B. and Jonathan Yarboro, Kristin B. and Santiago Espinosa, Alexandre Cato, Eliza Cato, Lavinia Karl, Luke Karl and Lillian Karl; grand-children: Katherine Yarboro, Isabella Espinosa and Cristavo Epinosa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Blowing Rock Fire Department/Rescue Squad, the Blowing Rock Library, Oasis, or the Baptist Campus Ministry at ASU.

There will be a private family gravesite service with full military honors at Woodlawn Cemetery. No memorial service is planned.
