Ruby Anna Harmon Dishman, 95, passed away August 21, 2013, – the birthday of her late husband – at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation.

Ruby Harmon Dishman
Ruby Harmon Dishman

Ruby, born June 28, 1918, was the last surviving child of Zenie and Council Harmon. Her siblings were Otis, Edward, Dan, Graydon, Willard, Iris, Clyde, Stacy, and Howard Harmon and Melvina Ward.

Ruby was a life-long resident of the high country: born in the Green Valley community and living many years in Sugar Grove. During World War II, she briefly worked in Asheville, sorting and gauging mica for the war industry and sharing a residence with other single women. In 1943, she married Loyd Clay Dishman of Sugar Grove, a schoolmate and childhood friend, then Sergeant in Army Air Corps serving in England as mechanic on B-17 bombers.

After the war, Ruby and Loyd settled in Sugar Grove where her brothers helped build a home on family land on Timbered Ridge Road. They produced five children: Bynum (deceased), Geraldine, Von, Betty, and Michael. Loyd and Ruby farmed tobacco, attended Timbered Ridge Baptist Church, and Ruby earned recognition for her fine quilting and sewing skills. One of her quilts was added to the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC, which brought her national attention in “Family Circle” magazine. Ruby and Loyd were married 62 years, and moved together from their home to Glenbridge as health failed. Loyd passed away in 2007.

Ruby was a life-long member of Timbered Ridge Baptist Church, walking muddy roads for services as a child and young adult, and lived to become the oldest member of the congregation.

In addition to her children listed above, Ruby Dishman is survived by six grandchildren: Ronnie Dishman, Anita Dishman, Tracy Pearson, Clay Dishman, Aaron Dishman and Benjamin Dishman. She is survived by six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:00 pm Thursday, August 22, 2013, at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home in Boone. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Friday, August 23, 2013, at Timbered Ridge Baptist Church, 137 Timbered Ridge Road, Sugar Grove, NC. Officiating will be Pastor Derek Wilson and Rev. Ray Greene. Burial will follow in the Greene Family Cemetery.

As Ruby always loved flowers, floral tributes will be welcome. Or, memorials may be made to the Timbered Ridge Baptist Church, in care of Dana Millsaps, 304 Smith Henson Road, Sugar Grove, NC 28679.
