Pastor Charles Franklin Hindman, 71, of 160 Hodges Lane, Banner Elk, passed away Sunday morning, April 27, 2014, at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tenn.

Charles was born on October 24, 1942 in Cross Anchor, South Carolina. When he was a teenager he accepted Jesus and was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He met his first wife Linda Miller in Raleigh and they were married in 1968. Charles went to college at Southern Adventist University and graduated with a Theology degree in 1969. During the rest of his life he pastored churches in seven different cities, including Burlington, Raleigh, Hickory, Greensboro, Columbia, Boone, and Banner Elk. After his first wife Linda died from cancer in 2002, Charles remarried Wanda Hodges in 2008. Charles loved the Lord, loved people, and was actively ministering until the very day he passed away.

Charles is survived by his wife, Wanda Hodges Hindman of the home; one son, Charles B. “Brian” Hindman and wife Teresa of Asheville; one daughter, Kriston Vardiman and husband Daniel of Tampa, Florida; two step-sons, Larry Hodges and wife Dianne of Cleveland, Tennessee, and Dr. Scott Hodges and wife Angie of Chattanooga, Tennessee; his mother, Frances Bailey Hindman-Living of Union, South Carolina; two grandsons, Jacob Charles Hindman of Asheville and Ian Vardiman of Tampa; two brothers, Stanley Hindman and David Hindman, both of Union, South Carolina, and one sister, Karen Thompson of Union. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda Miller Hindman; his father, Gerald Ralph Hindman, and one brother, Jerry Hindman.

Funeral services for Pastor Charles Franklin Hindman will be conducted Saturday afternoon, May 3, 2014, at 3:00 o’clock, at Banner Elk Seventh Day Adventist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 2:00 until 3:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Charles B. “Brian” Hindman, Elder Leslie Louis, and Elder Haskell Williams. Graveside services and burial will be conducted Sunday afternoon, May 4, 2014, at 1:00 o’clock, at Union Memorial Gardens in Union, South Carolina.

The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the residence, 160 Hodges Lane, Banner Elk.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to High Country Christian School, 1551 Tynecastle Highway, Banner Elk, North Carolina, 28604.

Sharon Jo Ann Kellam, D. April 25, 2014

Sharon Jo Ann Kellam, 71, of Vista Drive, West Jefferson, and formerly of Boone, passed away Friday morning, April 25 2014. Born June 26, 1942 in High Point, she was a daughter of Charles Edgar and Lois May Scott Kellam. Sharon was a musician, storyteller, historian, shape-note singer, music teacher, mother, sister and grandmother.

She is survived by two sons, Eric Frahm of Falls Church, Va. and Aaron Frahm of Whitsett, NC; two granddaughters, Lorelei Frahm of Falls Church, and Victoria Frahm of Whitsett; and her sister, Scotty Folds of Winston-Salem.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services for Sharon Jo Ann Kellam will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Elk Shoals United Methodist Camp, Post Office Box 208, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

Mr. Thomas Jefferson Gray, 70, of Rainbow Trail Road, Boone, passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2014 evening at home. Born September 29, 1943 in Hazard Kentucky, he was a son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Ethel Lee Johnson Gray. Tom was a member of Howard’s Creek Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and made the best of every situation; even through his sickness.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Gray four children, Jamie Carvell, Annette Bailey and husband Marion “Bug” Bailey, Thomas Jefferson Gray and wife Amanda and Robert Gray, ten grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, three step children, Leann Uptain and husband Less, Robert Cicman and wife Jean and Greg Sweet and wife Angela, ten step grandchildren and two brothers, Robert Gray and wife Beverly and Charles Gray and wife Lou of Indiana. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Reba Silvers and two brothers, Carl and Edward Gray.

Memorial services for Mr. Thomas Gray will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock at Howards Creek Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Chris Reynolds, Robert Cicman and Robert Gray. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 o’clock until 3 o’clock at Howards Creek Baptist Church. Phyllis Hollars Dotson, age 92, formerly of Deerfield Road, Boone, passed away Tuesday afternoon, April 22, 20l4. Born November 21, 1921 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Wilson and Buna Earp Hollars. Phyllis was a retired receptionist from Watauga Medical Center and previously worked several years for Belk department store.

Mrs. Dotson is survived by her son, Reyd Dotson and wife, Sandra, and granddaughter, Annika Dotson, all of Golden, Colorado. She is also survived by three sisters, Grace Fabisak of San Diego, CA., Rena Davis of Banner Elk, and Pat Willetts of Greensboro. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, McDonald Dotson; son, Keith Dotson; brother, Creed Hollars; and her parents.

Funeral services for Phyllis Hollars Dotson will be conducted Saturday morning, April 26, 2014, at 11 o’clock, at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Dr. Sonny Younce. The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 10 until 11 o’clock, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Private graveside services will be at Mount Lawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215.

Alfred Garrett, D. April 21, 2014

Dr. Alfred Gardner Garrett, age 87, of Shadowline Drive, Boone, passed away Monday morning, April 21, 2014, at Watauga Medical Center.

Born September 19, 1926 in El Dorado, Arkansas, he was a son of Eschen Boland Garrett, Sr. and Linetta Chambers Garrett.

After retiring as a chemist from DuPont, he taught briefly in the chemistry department at Appalachian State University.

Dr. Garrett is survived by his wife, Marjorie Murphy Garrett of the home; his daughter and son, Christine Garrett and Neilsen Garrett, both of Newark, Delaware; three step-sons, Jett Murphy of Fleetwood, John Murphy of Nashville, and Andrew Murphy of South Carolina; step-daughter, Julia Rummans of Hilton Head, South Carolina; brother, Carl Garrett of Arkansas; and sister, Frances Wynn of Louisiana.

Billy Dollar, D. April 21, 2014

Mr. William Phillip “Billy” Dollar, age 54, of Jefferson, passed away Monday, April 21, 2014 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Born April 16, 1960 in Ashe County, he was a son of the late William and Doris Parsons Dollar. Billy attended Gillespie Community Church and was a mechanic.

He is survived by one daughter, Macie Merritt and husband Andrew of Gilbert, Arizona, one son, Bill Dollar of Omaha, Nebraska, and two grandchildren, Lauren and Audriena Dollar of Nebraska.

Memorial services for Mr. Billy Dollar will be conducted Friday afternoon, April 25, 2014 at 1 o’clock at the Gillespie Community Church. Officiating will be Pastor Jim Francis.
