James F. Shull

James F. Shull, age 82, of Lower Cedar Valley Road, Hudson, a native and former resident of Todd, passed away Wednesday morning, April 24, 2013, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir.

Mr. Shull was born September 7, 1930 in Watauga County, a son of the late Walter and Lucy Shull. He was a retired carpenter for Edward’s Construction Company in Hudson. Mr. Shull was of the Baptist Faith.

Mr. Shull is survived by three sons, Cheyenne B. Shull of Hudson, Trinity S. Shull and wife Elizabeth of Rahway, New Jersey, and Tom Dixon of Trade, Tennessee; seven daughters, Debra Leo and husband John of New London, Pennsylvania, Marcia Combs and husband Gary of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, Gail Haynes and husband Rick, and Angie Dixon, all of Hudson, Jayne Hall and husband Jesse, and Lisa Elmes, all of Lenoir, and Lou Ann Shull Hoake and husband Ed of Trade; one sister, Geneva Bowles of Hudson; one brother, Jack Shull and wife Jo Ann of Mountain City,and a special friend, Marilyn Edwards of Hudson. He is also survived by seventeen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Janet Paisley Shull; his second wife, Helen Porter Shull; one son, Boyd Shane Shull, and one brother, Walter Ray “Boonie” Shull.

Funeral services for James F. Shull will be conducted Saturday morning, April 27, 2013, at 11:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Dennis Whitt. Burial will follow in the Howell Cemetery in Todd.

The family will receive friends Saturday morning, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Roy Burl Combs, April 24, 2013

Roy “Burl” Combs, age 76, of 53 North Main Street, West Salem, Ohio, a native and former resident of the Beaver Dam Community, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Hospice of Medina County, in Medina, Ohio.

M.S. (Bud) Altmayer of Blowing Rock and Boone, passed away on April 23 at the age of 96. Bud was born in Jacksonville, Fl in 1916, and moved to Miami in 1919. He lived there until he and his wife of 75 years, Joan Marion Manley moved to Blowing Rock permanently in 1977.

Bud graduated from Riverside Military Academy and attended the University of Miami. He married his life-long love, Joan in 1938.

During World War II, Bud served as a Major in the Air Force and spent three years in England as an executive officer in a bomb squadron where he served with distinction.

After the war, Bud returned to Miami and spent many successful years in various car dealerships and eventually ended his career as an insurance executive.

Bud chose a retirement career as an author and wrote numerous historical books about the Globe Valley and other fictional novels.

For a number of years, Bud volunteered at the Boone chapter of the Red Cross which was a cause near and dear to his heart. He was always there with a ready smile and help to those in need.

Bud is survived by his beloved wife, Joan and three children: Sally Enright of Blowing Rock, NC; Stephen Altmayer of Yakima, WA; and Ann Murphey of Gainesville, GA. He is also survived by six grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

At Bud’s request there will be no services.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be sent to the Boone chapter of the American Red Cross at 331 Queen Street, Boone, NC 28607.

Jake Burl Ward, 66, of Coy Harris Rd., Elk Park, passed away Monday, April 22, 2013, at his home. Born November 19, 1946 in Watauga County, he was a son of Ivan Burl and Edith Tester Ward. Mr. Ward was a member of Blue Ridge Community Church. He retired from Ward Construction and Masonry Company.

Jake was proud of his rock work but the love of his life was his family. He was especially proud of all his grandchildren.

Mr. Ward is survived by his wife, Betty Sue Harmon Ward; two sons, Mack Burl Ward and wife, Laura Beth, and William Ward and wife, Stephanie, and two daughters, Betty Mae Ellison and husband, Johnny, and Rita Canter and husband, Richard, all of Boone; seven grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; brother, Jimmy Dean Ward and wife, Pam, of Boone, five sisters, Kathy Oaks and husband Dennis, and Jeannie Stines and husband, Wade, all of Banner Elk, and Dorothy Ward and husband, Kenneth, Brenda Cornett and husband, Dale, and Rita Ward, all of Boone.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Mack and Bobby Ward.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 12 PM, at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Michael Minton. The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 10:30 until 12 o’clock, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Burial will follow in the Townsend Cemetery in Banner Elk.

Mrs. Pearl Storie Day, age 92, of 2381 George Hayes Road, Boone, died Saturday April 20, 2013, at Blowing Rock Extended Care.

Mrs. Day was born May 9, 1920 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Jather “Jake” Clingman Storie and Nora Moore Storie. She was a retired employee and group leader of IRC/TRW of Boone and a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Mrs. Day is survived by one daughter, Faye Day of Boone; three grandchildren, John E. “Jack” Day, Jr. and wife Cindy, of Lenoir, Charles M. Day and wife Ginger of Boone, and Andrew Day and wife Lesley of Cary, and nine great-grandchildren, John C. Day and Stephanie Day of Germany, Dillon Day and Landon Day of Boone, Jared Roberts of Crescent City, IL, Jake Day and Griffin Day of Cary, and Ethan Cassavaugh and Kelsey Cassavaugh of Lenoir. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of seventy-five years, Virgil L. Day; a daughter, Grace Day Walker; a son, John Edward Day; a son-in-law, Leslie Walker; three sisters, Erie Triplett and Illa Yates and an infant sister; and two brothers, Conley and Charlie Storie.

Funeral services for Mrs. Pearl Storie Day will be conducted Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 11:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 10:00 until 11:00. Officiating will be Reverend Harold Hayes. Burial will follow in the Moore Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 o’clock, prior to the service at Hampton Funeral Service.

The family respectfully requests no food.

Mr. Clayton L. “Paw” Lawrence “Boonie”, age 88, of 991 Tater Hill Road, Zionville, died Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.

Mr. Lawrence was an Army Veteran of World War II. He served on the Board of advisors for Mabel Elementary School and was also a member of the Cove Creek and Zionville Fire Departments. He was a life time farmer, a simple man and loved sitting on the porch or under a shade tree, waving at people passing by. He loved everyone and most of all, his family with all his heart.

Mr. Lawrence is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Belle Campbell Lawrence, of the home; three daughters, Willa Jean Sluder and husband Larry, of Mountain City, Hilda Sue Matheson and husband Ronald, of Mountain City, Diane Wood and husband Marty, of Zionville; two sisters, Ruth Isaacs and Jake Price and husband Bill, both of Lenoir; two grandsons, Jeff Beach and wife Breanne of Zionville, Chad Matheson and wife Amanda, of Boone; one granddaughter, Deray Wood of Lake Placid, Florida; three great-granddaughters Julie Matheson, Katie Matheson, both of Boone, and Presli Wood of Zionville; one sister-in-law, Della Lawrence of Lenoir, and one half sister-in-law, Stella Lawrence of Zionville. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Charles and Mae Isaacs Lawrence Beach; one brother, James Lawrence; two half brothers, Will Lawrence and Jack Lawrence, and one sister, Blanche Potter.

Funeral services for Mr. Clayton L. “Paw” Lawrence will be conducted Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at 7:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the Chapel, from 5:00 until 7:00. Officiating will be Reverend David Lunceford and Reverend Vernon Eller. Burial will be Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 11:00 o’clock in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 o’clock, prior to the service, at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the residence, 991 Tater Hill Road, Zionville.
