Alfred Garrett, D. May 21, 2014

Dr. Alfred Gardner Garrett, age 87, of Shadowline Drive, Boone, passed away Monday morning, May 21, 2014, at Watauga Medical Center. 

Born September 19, 1926 in El Dorado, Arkansas, he was a son of Eschen Bolan Garrett, Sr. and Linella Chambers Garrett. 

After retiring as a chemist from DuPont, he taught briefly in the chemistry department at Appalachian State University. 

Dr. Garrett is survived by his wife, Marjorie Murphy Garrett of the home; his daughter and son, Christine Garrett and Neilsen Garrett, both of Newark, Delaware; three step-sons, Jett Murphy of Fleetwood, John Murphy of Nashville, and Andrew Murphy of South Carolina; step-daughter, Julia Rummonds of Hilton Head, South Carolina; brother, Carl Garrett of Arkansas; and sister, Frances Wynn of Louisiana. 

Services for Dr. Alfred Gardner Garrett will be private.

Ina Stevens Carter, age 93, of 345 Watauga Drive, Boone, and former resident or Raleigh, passed away Monday morning, April 21, 2014, at Watauga Medical Center. 

Mrs. Carter is survived by, one daughter, Janice Blair and husband Don, of Boone, one son, Thomas Allen Carter, of Boone, one granddaughter, Beth Loflin and husband Steve, of Boone, one grandson, Jeffrey Carter Blair, of Memphis, Tennessee, two great-grandsons, Carter Blair, of Eugene, Oregon, Thomas Loflin, of Boone, three-great-granddaughters, Ryan Loflin of Boone, Emma Blair, and Ava Blair, Memphis, Tennessee, two brothers, William Stevens and wife Sue, of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, Donald Stevens, of New Bern, North Carolina, four sisters, Geneva Massengil, of Florida, Octavia Rivenbark, of Raleigh, North Carolina, Helen Denning, of Smithville, North Carolina, and Catherine Ward of Monroe, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Thomas Emory Carter, her father and mother, Allen Thurman Stevens and Helen Gertrude Hughes Stevens, one sister, Sue Wilson, and one brother, Jerry Stevens.

Funeral arrangments for Mrs. Ina Stevens Carter are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Hampton Funeral Service.

Mr. Earl Edward Hoffman, age 84, of 185 Norwood Hollow Road, Banner Elk, died Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.  

He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his father and mother John  & Margaret Ikey Hoffman, and his wife Jung Hoffman.  

Services will be held at a later date.

Ryan Lee Morton, age 46, of Boone, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014.

Survivors include his, father Reginald Morton of Lincolnton, North Carolina, two brothers, Mark M. Morton and wife Ann, of Fleetwood, Michael R. Morton and wife Rhonda, of Gastonia, North Carolina, and one niece, Madison Morton of Gastonia, North Carolina,

He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Goodson Morton.

Rev. A. B. Weaver, age 78, of East 7th Street, West Jefferson, passed away Saturday morning, April 19, 2014 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Born November 17, 1935 in Ashe County, he was a son of the late Wiley and Fay Burkett Weaver. A. B. was a graduate of Pfeiffer University, and attended Duke School of Divinity. He was a retired Methodist minister, former member of the Ashe County Board of Education and former Mayor of West Jefferson. A. B. was a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. 

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan Krider Weaver, one daughter, Joallen Lowder and husband Trent of West Jefferson, two sons; Matthew Weaver and wife Judy of Pawley’s Island, SC and Charles Allen Weaver of West Jefferson, two grandchildren, Henry and Joseph Lowder of West Jefferson, one sister, Anita Yates and husband Gwyn of West Jefferson, and a number of nieces and nephews. 

Memorial services for Rev. A. B. Weaver will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the West Jefferson Methodist Church. Officiating will be Dr. Perry Miller. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Weaver UMAR Home or United Methodist World Hunger, in care of West Jefferson United Methodist Church, PO Box 826, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

Jo Ann Corum, D. April 18, 2014

CorumJo Ann Absher Corum, age 78, Boone, passed away Friday morning, April 18, 2014 at Glenbridge Health Care.

Mrs. Corum is survived by her husband, Dr. Al Corum, of Boone; two sons, Mark Corum and Jeffrey Scott Corum, both of Columbia, South Carolina; one sister, Betty Griffin, and husband Dr. William R. Griffin, of Georgetown, South Carolina; one aunt Paralee Baldwin, of Ashe County, and one uncle, James Horton Absher, of Ashe County.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Emmett W. Absher and Lenna Parlier Absher, and one sister, Jerrie Rae.

She was a magna cum laude graduate from Appalachian State Teacher’s college with a degree in English. She taught English in the Miami-Dade County, Florida public schools. After she returned to Boone in 1970, she worked in the business department at Apalachian State University and as a substitute teacher in the Watauga County Public Schools.

She was active in several clubs and civic organizations in Boone, including the Appalachian Women’s Club and OASIS.

She was active in the First Baptist Church of Boone, particularly the Contemporary Ladies Sunday School Class.

Funeral services for Jo Ann Absher Corum will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at First Baptist Church of Boone. Reverend Roy Dobyns will officiate. The body will lie in state from 12:30 til 2:00 at the church.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 til 2:00 at the church.

Interment will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

Mr. Eugene Winebarger, age 75, of Martin Lane, Boone, passed away Friday, April 18, 2014 at his home. Eugene was born January 24, 1939 in Watauga County. He retired from TRW as a supervisor and worked for may years for Mack Brown, Inc. 

He is survived by one daughter, Kim Greer and husband Rev. Wynn Greer, three grandchildren; Noah Greer, Abigail Greer and Chloe Greer all of Vilas, his mother, Kate Tester of Vilas, one sister, Linda Wilson and husband Paul of Sugar Grove, his former wife, Lana King of Mountain City and a number of close nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Tony Winebarger, a granddaughter, Hannah Greer, his step father, Ed Tester, and one brother and sister in law, Fred and Wilma Winebarger. 

Graveside services for Mr. Eugene Winebarger will be conducted Monday afternoon at 3:30 at Forest Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Wynn Greer. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 o’clock until 3 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Marcella Guy Greene, D. April 17, 2014

Mrs. Marcella Marie Guy Greene, age 89, of Phillips Road Elk Park, passed away Thursday afternoon, April 17, 2014 at Watauga Medical Center. Born February 6, 1925 in Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Nora Phillips Guy. Marie was a member of Beech Creek Regular Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening and living a quiet, simple life. 

 She is survived by two daughters, Janet Trivett and husband Henry of Boone and Judy Freeman and husband Donn of Raleigh, one son, Jerry Greene and wife Patsy of Elk Park, seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Greene, one sister, Ruby Hicks, and two brothers, Jack and Ray Guy. 

Funeral services for Mrs. Marie Guy Greene will be conducted Sunday afternoon, April 20, 2014 at 3 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Dean Shepherd. Burial will follow in the Flat Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon prior to the service from 2 until 3 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Mary Frances Adams “Fran” Pardue, 63, of Silverstone Road, Zionville, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014 at home. She was born February 9, 1951 in Johnson County, Tennessee. Fran was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Mountain City, and was a detention officer with the Watauga County Sheriff’s Department. Her love in life was her family and grandchildren, and her passion for others was evident by her generosity to anyone in need. 

Mrs. Pardue is survived by her children, Ricky J. Pardue and wife, Billie of Vilas, Vickie Kinner and husband, Greg, of Zionville, Anna Isaacs and husband, Jordan, of Fleetwood, and Tony Pardue and wife, Holly, of Boone; her mother, Dora Adams of Butler, TN; five grandsons, Dustin and Ethan Pardue, both of Vilas, Channing Jeffers and Jaxson Kinner, both of Zionville, and Cohen Isaacs of Fleetwood; three brothers, Worley Adams, Charlie Adams and wife, Tammie, and David Adams and wife, Traci, all of Butler, TN; three sisters, Barbara Denney, and Connie Ashenbach and husband, Heath, all of Mountain City, TN, and Darlene Woodard of Butler, TN. A number of nieces, nephews, and cousins, and a special friend, Danny Herman of Mountain City, TN also survive. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. C. Pardue; and her father, Willie Reece Adams. 

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, April 21, 2014 at 11 AM at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Kenny Ray Vaught and Rev. David Ward. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5 until 7 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. 

The family suggests memorials to the Seby B. Jones Cancer Center Emergency Fund, PO Box 2600, Boone, NC 28607.

ChurchMelissa Sue Church, 48, of Holloway Mountain Road, Boone, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Watauga Medical Center. Born April 13, 1966 in Watauga County, Melissa was a daughter of Jack and Mary Ruth Presnell Church. 

She is survived by her mother, Mary Ruth Church of Elizabethton, TN; three sisters, Jackie Bridges and husband, Tab, and Joyce Henson and husband, Garry, all of Boone, and Pauline Greene and husband, David, of Sugar Mountain; her brother, Marty Church and wife, Jackie, of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and her niece and nephew, Brandie and Garrett Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jack Church; and nephew, Galen Henson. 

Memorial services for Melissa, officiated by Minister Dan Burks, will be held Friday, April 18th at 3:00 PM at Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel with visitation to follow. The family respectfully requests no food, and suggests memorials be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
