LyonsMarie Buck Lyons, age 81, of Chestnut Drive Blowing Rock, passed away Tuesday morning, April 1, 2014 at the Davant Extended Care Facility. Born March 6, 1933 in Elk Park, she was a daughter of the late Archie and Anna Ellis Buck. Marie was a homemaker and a member of Elk Park Christian Church. 

She is survived by her children; Anna Lyons of Mountain City, Carol Shaw and husband Morgan of Zionville, Harry Lyons and wife Susan of Vilas, Danny Lyons and wife Dana of Boone, and Michael Lyons and wife Judi of Washington, DC, two sisters, Clara Perry and husband Joe of Banner Elk and Jean Chappell and husband Don of Newland, one brother, Harry Buck and wife Tommie of Elizabethton, Tennessee. 

Memorial services for Marie Buck Lyons will be conducted Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 until 3 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. At other times friends may call at the residence of Harry & Susan Lyons, 444 Homestead Drive, Vilas, NC 28692. Mr. Coy Lee, age 95, of Sugar Mountain Road # 2, Newland, passed away Friday night, March 28, 2014 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk. Born December 23, 1918 in Avery County he was a son of the late James and Nora Trivett Lee. Coy was a member of Elk Valley Baptist Church. He was a farm hand for Ralph Gwaltney for many years. 

He is survived by two sisters, Lillie Parlier and Cora Holden of Lenoir, one brother, Homer Lee of Kokomo, Maryland and his caregivers; Hubert and Frankie Townsend of Boone and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Nora Trivett Lee, two sisters; Vickie Lee and Monnie McGuire, and six brothers; Paris, Virgil, Webb, Ira, Coolidge and Robert Lee.

Funeral services for Mr. Coy Lee will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Junior Carver. Burial will follow in the Elk Valley Baptist Church Cemetery in Banner Elk. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 o’clock until 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Mary Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ Hicks Farmer Presnell, age 84, of Boone, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation. Born October 8, 1929 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Calvin and Minnie Harmon Hicks. Ms. Lizzie was a member of Clarks Creek Baptist Church. She was devoted to loving and raising her family, and for a time, was employed at TRW. 

Survivors include her children, Jerry Farmer and wife Linda, of Mountain City, Jackie Farmer and wife, Sheri, and Shelia Church, all of Boone, and Betty Johnson and husband, Ralph, of Coshocton, Ohio; six granddaughters, Shannon Long and husband, Chris, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jennifer Lusk and husband, Phillip, of Valle Crucis, Sarah Pearson and husband, Trevor, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Rebekah Church of Lenoir, Rachel Church of Boone, and Melissa Snyder and husband, Darian, of Sugar Grove; six grandsons, Thomas Farmer and wife, Lora, of Burnsville, Edward ‘Dee’ Farmer and wife, Rachel, of Cary, Anthony Ashley and wife, Beth, of Sugar Grove, Brandon Farmer of Boone, Jonathan Johnson of Pensacola, Florida, and Christopher Johnson and wife, May of Coshocton, Ohio; twenty great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter; and sister, Lora Mae Jones and brother, Johnny Hicks and wife, Bobbie, all of Lenoir.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene William Farmer; infant daughter, Elizabeth Ann; sisters, Alma Cable, Ruby Elliott, and Nancy McGuire; brother, Charlie Hicks; and parents. 

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 30, 2014, at 2 PM at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Bill Warren, Rev. Ed Warren, Rev. Ralph Johnson and Rev. Ronnie Jones. The family will receive friends 12:30 until 2 PM, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Burial will follow in Clarks Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. 

Memorial gifts may be sent to the family in care of Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. 

The family will be at the home of a son, Jackie Farmer, 1941 Meat Camp Road, Boone.

Mrs. Katherine Farmer “Kathy” Reese, age 80, of Boone passed away Wednesday in Colorado. Kathy was a long time member of the First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children, Elaine Figlia and husband Paul of Morrison, Colorado, Travis Phillips of Washington State, Evin Phillips of Huntersville, Boyd Phillips and wife Selina of Boone, Ronnie Reese of Boone, William Reese of the Beaver Dam Community, Bekah Adams and husband Virgil of Wilkesboro, Trish Yale and husband Rick of Wilkesboro and Johnny Reese of Boone, six grandchildren; Dominic Tedesco, of Morrison, Colorado, Evin, Devan and Ozzy Phillips of Boone Carli Adams and husband Bryan Hoofnagle of Asheville and Daniel Adams of Washington, DC, one sister, Rae Seabolt of Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Gene L. Reese. 

Memorial services for Mrs. Kathy Reese will be conducted Saturday April 5, at 2 o’clock at the First Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Roy Dobyns. Annie Ruth Smith Welch, age 99, of Dutch Creek Road, Banner Elk, passed away Tuesday morning, March 25, 2014, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

Mrs. Welch was born March 11, 1915 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late William and Annie Pearson Smith. She was a homemaker and a member of Clark’s Creek Baptist Church. 

Mrs. Welch is survived by one daughter, Anne Culler and husband Dewey of Boone; three sons, Louis Welch and wife Evelyn of Elizabethton, Tennessee, Bill Welch and wife Marilyn, and Ernest Welch, all of Banner Elk; two brothers, Hade Smith of Banner Elk, and Hoover Smith and wife Lois of Lexington, North Carolina; four sisters, Velma Dobson of Atlanta, Georgia, Victoria Yates of Vilas, Doris Bliss of Banner Elk, and Helen Rominger of Boone. She is also survived by two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bynum Welch, and two brothers, Lowell Smith and Byrd Smith.

Funeral services for Annie Ruth Smith Welch will be conducted Friday afternoon, March 28, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Mike Townsend and Reverend Rick Critcher. Burial will follow in Clark’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Robert Warren Setzer, age 64, of NC Highway 88 West, Zionville, the Creston Community, passed away Monday, March 24, 2014, at his home.

Mr. Setzer was born August 25, 1949 in Caldwell County, a son of Robert Lee Setzer and Myrtle Marie Robbins Setzer. He was a retired mail carrier for the United States Postal Service and a member of Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church.

Mr. Setzer is survived by his wife, Mary F. Setzer, of the home, two daughters, Daphne Houchins and husband David of Unicoi, Tennessee, and Susan Mellor  and husband Eric, of Deltona, Florida, one granddaughter, Madison Seekins of Unicoi, Tennessee, one grandson, Deven Mellor, of Deltona, Florida, one brother, Keith Setzer and wife Debbie, of Creston, North Carolina, and one sister, Karen Prothero, of Boone, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by, two granddaughters, Janie Nicole Seekins and Kinsey Elise Mellor, and one brother, Leslie Setzer.

Funeral services for Mr. Robert Warren Setzer will be conducted Friday, March 28th, at Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church, at 2:00 o’clock.
Reverend Delmar James will officiate. The body will lie in state from 1:00 to 2:00.  Interment will follow in Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 til 2:00 one hour prior to the service at the church.
