EM Coordinator: Over $1M in Damage to Dwellings, Businesses from Flood; DOT: $425,000 to Roads

According to Steve Sudderth, Watauga County emergency management coordinator, initial damage assessments from the Jan. 30 flood in Boone are looking to be in excess of $1 million, not including road and bridge damage either state or private. More than 40 residences and businesses were damaged according to initial estimates. 

“Our initial damage assessment is $1,058,505.00, with the primary area impacted in the Boone Docks Street and Meadowview Street area of Boone,” Sudderth said in an email Friday afternoon at around 4 p.m. 

The assessment included three mobile homes damaged at an estimate of $30,000; 27 apartments at an estimate of $48,005; and 13 businesses at an estimate of $980,500.

In terms of area roads, Watauga and Avery counties sustained some damage from the heavy rainfall but nowhere near the amount in Ashe County. 

According to NCDOT Division 11 Engineer Michael Pettyjohn on Friday afternoon, Watauga County roads sustained an estimated $425,000 in damage, based on the most recent assessments. Avery County roads took a $125,000 hit. In Ashe County, the roads were damaged to the tune of a whopping $3.8 million.
