Watauga County Library and Downtown Boone Development Association Host Story Walk Oct. 22-Nov 6

Oct. 11, 2013. The Downtown Boone Development Association and the Watauga County Library and delighted to bring the Story Walk Project to Downtown Boone. A special Downtown Boone Story Walk kickoff party will be held at the Watauga County Library on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 11:30-12:30 p.m. Activities include Downtown Boone Story Walk with Mayor Clawson followed by arts, crafts and refreshments at the library’s meeting room.

The Story Walk Project was first created by Anne Ferguson of Pontpelier, Vermont and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library.

The goal of the Story Walk project is to encourage families to enjoy being outside and increasing exercise while at the same time promoting reading throughout the community. The downtown Boone Story Walk places a laminated page or set of pages from a children’s book in downtown store front windows. Children and their families can walk from store to store reading the book while enjoying Downtown Boone.

Virginia Falck explains Downtown Boone’s Story Walk origins, “Lisa Flanigan from the Watauga County Library was approached about the Story Walk project by a library patron and presented the idea to me,” said Falck. “I immediately began to get excited about the potential of a Downtown Boone Story Walk. After an initial discussion about the project, we realized that it would be an excellent partnership for the Watauga County Library and the DBDA. We saw an opportunity to provide a fun and educational activity for local families and visitors to Downtown Boone as well as promoting our Downtown Boone business district. When we approached downtown businesses about Story Walk, the participating merchants were excited and happy to offer up their window spaces for the project.”

She continues, “The Downtown Boone Story Walk project is exciting because it provides a new and fun activity for local families and families visiting our area. I’m looking forward to seeing how the program unfolds, and being open to other Story Walk possibilities for Downtown Boone in the future.”

The Downtown Boone Halloween Story Walk begins at the Watauga County Library. During the library’s normal hours of operation stop by the Youth Services desk to pick up your story walk map. The map contains directions and instructions for the Downtown Boone Story Walk as well as an optional word search.

Once the children have finished the story walk they may stop by the library for a special Halloween prize. Downtown Boone Halloween Story Walk will start Oct. 22 and conclude on Nov. 6.
