Watauga County Historical Society Announces Sept. 9 as “Joe Miller Day,” Holds Event at the Jones House in Downtown Boone

Joe Miller turned his passion of art into an enterprise and reveals his story of achieving success through his small-town roots.

Circle this date on your calendar!  Hosted by the Watauga County Historical Society, the town of Boone will officially proclaim Sunday, September 9 as “Joe Miller Day.” This special event will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Jones House in downtown Boone. Light refreshments will be served.

The event will be highlighted by a formal proclamation by Boone mayor Rennie Brantz and the official release of Cheap Joea new 257-page book by local artist and author Noyes Capehart on the life and accomplishments of Joe Miller. As stated in the sub-title of the book, it showcases “the improbable but true story of Joe Miller, a small town pharmacist who mastered the fickle technique of watercolor and along the way created one of the most successful art supply companies in America.”

Joe Miller was born in front of Boone Drug Store in 1939 and spent his lifetime making invaluable contributions to the welfare and best interests of our town. He is, in a word, a true icon. Those of you who know and admire Joe will not want to miss this special celebration. Those of you who want to meet this creative man will certainly not have a better opportunity to do so. Joe and Noyes will be there to sign your copies of the book. Bring a friend! Make Sunday, Sept. 9, a day to remember.
