June 11, 2014. On Saturday, July 5, at 8 a.m., Watauga County Firefighters Association is hosting the second annual Stop! Drop! and Roll 5K. This run/walk provides participants the opportunity to stay fit while supporting a great cause. Early registration (before July 2) for the fundraiser is $20 while the late fee is $25.
All proceeds from the run/walk will be divided evenly between North Carolina Firefighters’ Burned Children Fund and Watauga County Firefighters Assocation which will invest its earnings toward a scholarship for high school graduates wishing to pursue a career within the emergency services.
Local fireman Ronnie Marsh, a member of the North Carolina Firefighters Burned Children Fund has worked in the High Country with emergency services for the past 38 years and plans to retire within the next two years. Marsh’s reason for starting this event is due to his compassion toward individuals who have suffered brain injuries which he has observed over the years working as a fire marshall.
The Firefighters Burned Children Fund was organized in 1989 in Chapel Hill by firefighters who were concerned for children who had significant burn injuries. The first and foremost objective of the fund is prevention and education. The organization’s second objective is to provide both financial and emotional support to burn victims. There are no age restrictions on who can be involved with the fund, anyone who has sustained burn injuries is eligible to participate.
Last year, Stop! Drop! and Roll! had more than 120 participants helping to raise more than $2,400 for the two organizations. We hope to surpass these statistics with your help.
