Watauga County Commissioners Proclaim May 12-17 as Community Pride Week to Improve County Appearance

May 8, 2014. The Watauga County Board of Commissioners have designated May 12-17 as Community Pride Week with the goal of improving the appearance of Watauga County.

imgres-1During this week, Watauga County residents will have the opportunity to dispose of many types of waste for no charge, including old furniture, yard debris, appliances, electronics, medications and household hazardous waste. This does not apply to commercial haulers or businesses.

“This week is all about working together to protect and conserve our vast natural resources, which is essential to the continued quality of life for the residents of Watauga County,” said Watauga County Recycling Manager Lisa Doty.

“We want to provide as many opportunities as possible for residents to dispose of their waste n an environmentally responsible way.”

Following is a list of Community Pride Week events. All events are free for Watauga County residents.

Free Disposal of Residential Debris

Free disposal of residential debris will take place from Monday, May 12 through Saturday, May 17. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Appliances, tires, furniture, metal, asphalt, brick, cement, rocks and brush will be taken at the Watauga County Landfill located at 336 Landfill Rd.

Household Hazardous Waste Day

Household hazardous waste day will be held on Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Watauga County Landfill at 336 Landfill Rd. Items to be disposed include paint, antifreeze, ethylene, gasoline, lighter fluid, solid and liquid pesticides, oxidizers, household cleaners, etc. The event will also accept used oil, household batteries, lead-acid batteries and fluorescent lights on this day or any day during the year.

Operation Medicine Cabinet

Operation Medicine Cabinet will take place on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Foscoe Fire Department and Food Lions at U.S. 321 near Walmart, U.S. 421 and in Blowing Rock. All prescription and over the counter medications and medical supplies will be collected, no questions asked.
