April 29, 2014. The Watauga County Board of Education have called a special meeting for Thursday, May 1, at 6 p.m. to select the next permanent superintendent of Watauga County Schools, according to Watauga County Schools spokesman Marshall Ashcraft.

The meeting will be held at Gragg Education Center off of N.C. 194 in Boone.

More than 20 candidates applied for the superintendent position before the Jan. 15 deadline. The school board then met in multiple closed session meetings to review the applicants.

The current interim superintendent is Dr. David Fonseca, who took over last April after former WCS Supt. David Kafitz agreed to contract buyout. See more on the prior Kafitz situation here.

Fonseca’s interim contract expires June 30.
