Ms. Bethany A. Morgan 
(March 04, 1968 – September 2, 2018) 

    Bethany Ann Morgan, age 50 of Forest Hills Drive, Boone, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018 at the Watauga Medical Center. Born March 4, 1968 in Jessup, Georgia, she was a daughter of Billie Hennings Morgan and Alvin B. Morgan, Jr.
    Bethany was a phlebotomist.
    She is survived by one daughter, Erin Morgan, her mother, Billie Morgan, her father, Alvin B. Morgan, Jr., her fiancé Ronnie Hampton and his son Garrett, one brother, Alvin B Morgan, III, two sisters, Karen Knowles and Kathryn Morgan, and two nieces, Lindsay Morgan and Cresent Woods.
    Memorial services for Bethany Morgan will be conducted Friday afternoon, September 7, 2018 at 1 PM at St. Lukes Episcopal Church Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Cyndi Banks.

Mr. Harold D. Holman 
(October 26, 1941 – September 4, 2018) 

    Mr. Harold Douglas Holman, age 76, of Boone and Steinhatchee, Florida, passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2018 in Florida. Born October 26, 1941 in Ashe County, he was a son of the late Freeman and Martha Orfield Holman. Harold was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and later scalloping. He also was an accomplished baker and loved to play practical jokes on friends and family. Harold served six years in the NC National Guard. 
    He is survived by his wife, Clara Holman of Florida, three daughters, Deborah Holman Miller and husband Joseph, Dorinda Holman Bouboulis and husband Bryan, and Brenda Costner and husband Drew, five step children, Betty Greene, Bonnie Rooks (Eddie), Lamar Hamilton (Ann) , Irene Grant, and Linda Bryant (Wayne), eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren, seven step grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren, a special sister and brother in law and gracious caregivers, Gwen and Richard Carmichael, four sisters, Anna Mae Goodman, Peggy Calloway (Johnny), Vivian Martin and Kathy Stansberry, five brothers, Robbie Holman (Dana), Kyle Holman (Shirley), Mike Holman (Wanda), Wayne Holman (Judy), George Holman (Diana) two sister in laws, Mary Holman and Helen Jackson Ellis and by a number of nieces and nephews. 
    In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn Jackson Holman, one sister, Phyllis Holman, three brothers, Tom, Dwight and Jim Holman, and two brothers in law, Kermit Goodman and Cecil Martin and one sister in law, Ann Holman.
    Funeral services for Mr. Harold Holman will be conducted Sunday, afternoon September 9, 2018 at 
    4:00 PM at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Richard Jerkins. Burial will follow in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. 
    The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2:00 until 4:00 PM prior to the service.

George Howell Hayes 
(July 07, 1923 – September 4, 2018) 

    George Howell Hayes, age 95, of Cecil Street, Boone, passed away Tuesday morning, September 4, 2018 at Watauga Medical Center. Born July 7, 1923 in Watauga County, he was a son of George Hamilton and Rosa Coffey Hayes. Mr. Hayes was a member of Rutherwood Baptist Church. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during WWII. For many years, he owned and operated Hayes Tire Service in the Rutherwood community. 
    Howell enjoyed sharing his bounty of apples with family, neighbors and friends. As he stated many times, he loved the Lord and was blessed beyond measure. Howell was a special friend to all who knew him. 
    
    Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife of 15 years, Jean Greene Hayes; daughter, Brenda Shook and husband, Mike, of the Foscoe community, and son, Mark Hayes of Boone; three grandchildren, Rebekah Hayes and Mason and Alexis Shook; step-daughters, Evelyn Dugger of Elizabethton, TN, Wanda Gentry of Mountain City, TN, and Melanie Shelton of Louisville, KY; step-son, Dale Reece of Todd; sisters-in-law, Treva Castle and husband, Lynn and Flavel Eggers, all of Boone, Canses Smith of Charlotte, Frieda Crotts of Granite Falls, and Barbara Barnes and husband, Tom, of Huntersville. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Delma Moretz Hayes; brothers, Roby, Tom, Orris, Don, Joe, Bill and Buck Hayes; and sisters, Nannie Cook, Texie Cook, Doris VanDyke and Julia Hicks. 
    
    Funeral services for Howell Hayes will be conducted Saturday afternoon, September 8, 2018, at 2 oclock at Rutherwood Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Peter Vandenberg, Rev. Bud Russell and Minister Gordon Noble. The family will receive friends Saturday from noon until 2 oclock, prior to services, at the church. 
    Military graveside Honors, provided by the American Legion Post #130 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

Mary Lee Winebarger Tester 
(January 19, 1943 – September 11, 2018) 
  

Mary Lee Winebarger Tester, age 75, of Rush Branch Road, Sugar Grove, passed away Tuesday morning, September 11, 2018 at Watauga Medical Center. Born January 19, 1943, she was a daughter of Earl and Mattie Verble Tester Winebarger. Mary Lee was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and a homemaker.
    
    She is survived by her husband, Larry Dean Tester; son, Doug Tester and wife, Greta, of Zionville; daughters, Debbie Reese and husband, Butch, and Paula Hall and husband, Ron, all of Vilas; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brother, Junior Winebarger and wife, Brenda, and sister, Jeanette Ward, all of Vilas; and special friend, Mildred Glenn of Sugar Grove. 
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Winebarger and sister-in-law, Linda Winebarger. 
    
    Graveside services for Mary Lee Tester will be conducted Thursday morning, September 13, 2018, at 10 oclock at the Tester Family Cemetery, officiated by Preacher Butch Reese and Rev. David Ward. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, September 12th from 6 until 7:30, at Austin & Barnes.

John W. Tester

May 16, 1940 – September 06, 2018

John W. Tester, age 78, of Martha Drive, Boone, passed away Thursday morning, September 6, 2018, at his home.

John was born May 16, 1940 in Watauga County, a son of the late Gladys Nora Tester. He was a retired Vietnam Veteran, serving with the United States Air Force, where he was a recipient of The Bronze Star. He was the director of the Red, White, and Bluegrass Jam for 12 years. John was a member of Middle Fork Baptist Church.

John is survived by his wife, Janice Cook Tester of the home; , and three sons, John Wayne Tester, Jr., Darin Tester and wife Mary, all of Boone, and Scott Tester of Pacifica, California.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Tester of Blowing Rock.

A private memorial service for John W. Tester will be conducted at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Dean J. Icenhour

May 06, 1938 – September 07, 2018

Dean J. Icenhour, age 80, of Bethlehem Church Road, Gold Hill, North Carolina, a native and former resident of Watauga County, passed away Friday morning, September 7, 2018, at Atrium Health in Stanly.

Dean is survived by his wife, Reda Ward Icenhour of the home; two daughters, Brenda Riggs and husband Anthony of Clemmons, and Amy Butler and husband Allen of Gold Hill; one step-daughter, Regina Hudson and husband Bryan of Deep Gap; three sons, Billy Icenhour of Todd, Frank Icenhour and wife Tina, and Fred Icenhour and wife Etta, all of Yadkinville; one step-son, Andy Green and wife Joann of Deep Gap; one sister, Carolina Cantor of Todd, and three brothers, Jim, Caroll, and Duke Icenhour, all of Todd.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Arthur and Martha Wilson Icenhour, and one daughter, Kathleen Main.

Funeral services for Dean J. Icenhour will be conducted Sunday afternoon, September 9, 2018, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Andy Greene. Burial will follow in the William Ward Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Boyd C. Gillis

August 28, 1932 – September 09, 2018

Boyd C. Gillis, age 86, of Silverstone Road, Zionville, husband of Sally Perry Gillis, passed away Sunday afternoon, September 9, 2018, at his home.

Boyd was born August 28, 1932 in Randolph County, a son of the late Howard Taft Gillis and Nellie Eugenia Fuqua Gillis. He was a member of the Raleigh Lions Club, and a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church in Roxboro. Boyd was a recipient of the “Order of the Long Leaf Pine”, presented to him by the Governor of North Carolina for his outstanding service of our state.

In addition to his wife, Boyd is survived by two step-sons, Robert Gregory Futrelle of London, England, and George H. Futrelle and wife Renee of Mount Olive, North Carolina; one step-daughter, Joy Ingallinera and husband Carl of Raleigh; five granddaughters, Dr. Hailey Gillis Amick of Knoxville, Tennessee, Katherine Gillis Lander of Hillsborough, Rachael Gillis VanDam of Williamburg, Virginia, Samantha Futrelle, and Meredith Futrelle, both of Mount Olive, North Carolina. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Lowery Gillis; one son, Michael Boyd Gillis; one grandson, Axel Gillis, and one brother, Neil Gillis.

Funeral services for Boyd C. Gillis will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, September 12, 2018, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Dr. Victor Blackwell and Reverend George Futrelle. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Neil Stogner

July 22, 1959 – September 7, 2018

Neil Cameron Stogner, age 59, of Linville Falls, North Carolina passed away on Friday, September 7, 2018 at his Mission Hospital Memorial Campus in Asheville, NC.

He was born on July 22, 1959 in Norfolk City County, Virginia, a son of Dolly Collins Stogner of Linville Falls, NC and the late James Mack Stogner.

Neil enjoyed Boating and Fishing, along with cooking. He had served as a Guardian Ad Litem for many years.

He was preceded in death by his Father, James Mack Stogner; .

In addition to his mother, Neil leaves behind to cherish his memory a Son, Cody Stogner of Pembroke Pines, FL, and a Brother, Jeff Stogner of Ocala, FL.
