Mr. Robert C. Dancy (Aug. 25, 1935 – Sept. 6, 2016)

Mr. Robert Clayton Dancy, 81, of Vanderpool Road, Vilas, passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 6, 2016 at his home. Born August 25, 1935 in Watauga County, he was a son of the late Conard and Edna Isaacs Dancy. Robert was retired from Blue Ridge Electric.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Brown Dancy, two daughters, Kathy Massengill and Ruth Ann Harmon and husband Randy all of Vilas, two sons, Kenneth Dancy and Robert Allen Dancy and wife Agnes Irene Dancy all of Vilas, seven grandchildren, Herman and John Massengill, Steve Allen Dancy, Earl Dancy, Leslie McCracken, Amy Cass and Ericka Harmon, eleven great grandchildren, three sisters, Susie Adams and husband Walter of Freeland, MD, Kathleen Campbell and husband Gary of Zionville, and Patsy Henderson and husband Bud of West Jefferson, six brothers, Glenn Dancy of Lenoir, Jack Dancy and wife Ellen, Lloyd Dancy and wife Karen all of Vilas, Billy Dancy and wife Virginia, Gene Dancy and wife Evelyn, and Ted Dancy and wife Janie all of Zionville, and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Conrad and Edna Isaacs Dancy, an infant great grandson, one brother, Charlie Dancy, one sister, Vertie Teague and one sister in law, Shirley Dancy.

Funeral services for Mr. Robert Dancy will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 oclock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Thomas Brown. Burial will follow in the Vanderpool Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday afternoon prior to the service from 1 until 2 oclock at the funeral home. Betty Shore Cook (Sept. 9, 1932 – Sept. 6, 2016)

On Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016, at 10:58 a.m., Betty Shore Cook beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother went home to be with the Lord. Betty is survived by her husband, Stewart Daniel Cook of the home, one daughter Anita C. McGuire of Lenoir, NC, two grandsons: Lucas D. McGuire of Lenoir, NC and Matthew A. McGuire plus his family Matthew’s wife Nichole, and their children listed chronologically, William, Madeleine, and Henry all of Jefferson, NC.

During her lifetime Betty was a homemaker and also a talented artist. She composed a number of songs and poems some of which were published. She spent many hours creating artwork which she sold in an antique store that she and her husband ran for a number of years. She loved Watauga County and its friendly residents. She could never imagine living anywhere else except these magnificent mountains.

Betty had been ill for some years and passed quietly at home as her husband held her hand with the excellent assistance of MediHome Health and Hospice. The Cook family is most grateful to this amazing nonprofit organization and its compassionate volunteers who work diligently to help ease the suffering of those who have terminal illnesses and want to spend their last months in the comfort of their own homes.

Per her express wishes Betty has been cremated. At a date yet to be scheduled the Cook family plans to to have a small memorial gathering in honor of their beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother where friends and family may spend time remembering her with joy and love.

Barbara Navone Perry (July 6, 1950 – Sept. 3, 2016)

Mrs. Barbara Navone Perry, age 66, of 500 Isenhour Road, Zionville, the wife of James Perry passed away Saturday, September 3, 2016 at her residence.

Barbara was born July 6, 1950 in Millville, New Jersey, a daughter of Bertha Carole and the late Norman Harry Bennett, Sr. She was a retired mechanic for Wheaton Plastic Factory.

Barbara is survived by her husband, James “Joe” Perry of the home; two sons, Bobby Navone and wife Dawn of Trade Tennessee, and Edward Navone of New Jersey; one step-son, Donavan Perry and wife Felicia of the Beech Creek Community; her mother, Bertha Carole of Millville, New Jersey; five sisters, Mary Ann Uncle and husband Dave of Millville, New Jersey, Bonnie Porter of Zionville, Gloria Shephard and husband Robert of Heislerville, New Jersey, Debbie Banks and husband Paul of Millville, New Jersey, and Dee Pepper and husband Chuck of Quinton, New Jersey; one brother, Norman Bennett and wife Debbie of Myrtle Beach, and a step-granddaughter and caregiver, Jae Cee Marchand of Hickory. She is also survived by many grandchildren, one uncle and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and burial for Mrs. Barbara Navone Perry will be conducted Wednesday morning, at 10:00 o’clock, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Officiating will be Pastor Tim Pierce.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

John P. Gantt (Feb. 19, 1925 – Sept. 2, 2016)

“Gone from our side, but not from our hearts”, John P. Gantt , age 91, of Newland passed away on September 2, 2016 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Cleveland County, NC, he was born February 19, 1925 a son of the late Clarence James Gantt and the late Ella Walker Gantt.

He was a 1950 graduate of North Carolina State University and worked for many years as a Manager for the North Carolina Dairymen in Morganton.

John was a proud United States Navy Veteran having served on board the aircraft carrier USS Cowpens (CV-25) nicknamed “the Mighty Moo” in the Pacific during World War II. He was an avid Golfer, enjoying his time spent with his golfing buddies at Mountain Glen Golf Course in Newland. John also enjoyed hunting, restoring old cars, and was known as a great cook.

Along with his parents, John was preceded in death by his: brothers, James Allie Gantt, Clyde Gantt; sisters, Doris Gantt and Cora Lee Tate.

John has left to cherish his memory his: wife of 46 years, Jean Walker Gantt; son, Rod Gantt, and his wife, Vickie, of Lexington, NC; daughters, Deborah Gantt-Fishel, and her husband, Sanford, of Grassy Creek, NC, Sherry Gantt of Marietta, GA, Wendy Farthing of Newland; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Sunday, September 4, 2016 the funeral home.

Mrs. Sandra E. Trexler (July 20, 1958 – Sept. 1, 2016)

Mrs. Sandra Edmisten Trexler, 58, of Boone, passed away Thursday night, Sept. 1, 2016 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. Born July 20, 1958 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Loyce Minton Edmisten and the late William Larry Edmisten, Sr.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and was an Administrative Secretary at Grace Lutheran Church for many years. Mom loved dachshunds, working with kids, a good book, singing her heart out, making goofy faces, chocolate, and crunchy chips. She and Tom were Friday night regulars of Tuckers Cafe and were considered their good luck charm. A loving and selfless lady, she always put others needs before her own. Sandy was an angel among for 58 years and her memory will live on in us forever.

She is survived by her husband Tom Trexler, two daughters; Sarah Gould and husband Troy of Raleigh, and Heather Wullenweber and husband Josh of Hendersonville, NC, her mother, Loyce Edmisten of Boone, one sister, Mary Coffey and husband Dennis of Dunn, NC, one brother, William Edmisten, Jr., and wife Teresa of Decatur, Georgia, one niece, Leslie Harrell and husband Michael of Leland, NC, two nephews, Brad Coffey of Raleigh, and Wesley Edmisten of Decatur, Georgia, one great nephew, Kamden Harrell of Leland, NC, she is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Claude and Blanche Minton, and her paternal grandparents, Claude and Maxie Edmisten.

A service to celebrate the life of Sandy Trexler will be conducted Monday afternoon at 4 oclock at the First Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Roy Dobyns and Rev. Jonathan Weant. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Rise Up Campaign, 375 West King Street, Boone, NC 28607 or to Chapmans Dachshund Rescue, 1200 Chambers Road, York, South Carolina 29745.

Margaret A. Boisvert (April 19, 1939 – August 31, 2016)

Margaret Anne Boisvert, 77 of Banner Elk, passed away Wednesday evening, August 31, 2016 in the Life Care Center of Banner Elk. She was a native of Sumter, S.C.

She is survived by her husband, Rev. Father Henry Boisvert, two sons, Leo L. Boisvert of Virginia Beach, Va., and Henry Paul Boisvert, II of West Virginia, a daughter, Elizabeth Eldering of Anderson, S.C. and a sister Mary Lee Greene of Columbia, S.C. 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren also survive.

The family will receive friends Saturday, September 3, 2016 from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Sts. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in Boone. Funeral services will begin at 4 p.m. following the visitation.

Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at 2 p.m. in the Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, Virginia.

Johnie Rockford Canady, 74, of Richlands, North Carolina, died Wednesday, August 31, 2016.

Johnie is survived by his son, Johnnie “Rocky” Canady, of Charlotte, and two daughters, Sherry Canady of Raleigh and Regina Hartley and husband Terry of Boone. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Senter Canady, and a son, James Ray Canady.

Miriam Josephine Amick Kirkpatrick, 89, of Boone N.C., wife of the late Billy R. Kirkpatrick, died on Tuesday, August 30.

Surviving are her daughter, Kathryn Kirkpatrick of Vilas, NC; her son, David Kirkpatrick, of Durham, NC; her granddaughter, Grace Kirkpatrick of Vassar College; her sisters, Dorothy Strickland of Chapin, SC and Roberta Bryan of Atlanta, GA; and her brother, Eldred Amick of Prosperity, SC.

An open house will be held at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home on Queen St. in Boone, NC, on Friday, September 2 from 5 to 7 p.m.

A graveside service will be conducted Sunday, September 4, 2016 at 1:45 p.m. in the Greenville Memorial Gardens, Piedmont, S.C.

Funeral services will follow the burial in the Trinity Lutheran Church at 421 North Main St. in Greenville, SC, on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
