B.W. “Bugg” McNeely (April 17, 1931 – Sept. 11, 2017)

Bugg” McNeely, 86, of Pineola, North Carolina passed away on Monday, Sept. 11, 2017 at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville, NC.

He was born on April 17, 1931 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of the late Willie A. McNeely and the late Selma Greene McNeely. Bugg attended Lees-McRae until he was called to serve his country in the United States Navy. He proudly served during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning home he went to work at Broughton Hospital in Morganton. Bugg enjoyed spending time in his garden and raising Christmas Trees on his farm, as well as spending time playing basketball and football. He spent 25 winters in Florida where he enjoyed fishing and playing shuffleboard.

Having strong faith in his Lord and Savior, he was a member of the Pineola Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon for 40 years. BW enjoyed singing gospel songs in the church choir.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ethel Cuthbertson; .
BW leaves behind to cherish his memory his: Wife of 62 years, Teena Vance McNeely of the home; his daughter, Debbie and Duane Kuykendall of Hickory; grandson, Jason and Miriam Kuykendall of Concord; great granddaughter, Charlotte Kuykendall; nephews, Bill and Diane McNeely of Elk Park, Creedy and Dinah Cuthbertson of Newland; sister-in-law, Peggy Travison of Stanley; a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for B.W. “Bugg” McNeely will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 beginning at 7:00 pm from the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Duane Kuykendall, Rev. Rufus Biddix, and the Rev. Lonnie Barnes officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 5:30 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home
Family, friends, and pallbearers will gather at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday morning to go in procession to the Pineola Cemetery for Military Honors to be provided by the Pat Ray Post of the VFW.

The family would like to offer their thanks to the Nurses and Staff of Medi Home Hospice and to the members of the Pineola Baptist Church.

Geneva A Vance (Nov. 12, 1928 – Sept. 7, 2017)

Geneva A. Vance, 88, of Elk Park North Carolina went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday Sept. 7, 2017, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Geneva was born in Iowa on November 12, 1928 to Charlie and Mary Arnold. She was a member of Lewis Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Minneapolis, North Carolina.

In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by her husband, Walter William Vance; four brothers; Kenneth Arnold, Charles Arnold, Joe Arnold, Jim Arnold and one sister, Lorene Rhoton all of Tennessee.

She is survived by her family, two sisters Ruth Holtsclaw of Newland, NC and Susan Woods of Church Hill, Tennessee. Two Brothers; Jack and Mary Arnold of Titusville, Florida and Johnny and Carolyn Arnold of Indian Springs, Tennessee; Five Daughters; Sandra Kaye Vance of Roan Mountain, Tennessee. Donna and (Gary) Banner of Newland, North Carolina, Karen (Eddie) Fields of Roan Mountain, Tennessee, Pam Vance and Bobby Clouser of Roan Mountain, Tennessee and Patricia Doty of Elk Park, North Carolina. 

Geneva worked at Baxters and retired after 19 years of service. After retiring she loved to cook and spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was truly loved by her grandchildren; Dean and (Melinda) Fields of Roan Mountain, Tennessee, Lisa and (Tony) Pittman of Pineola, North Carolina, Scott and (Jennifer) Banner of Morganton, North Carolina, Angie and (Ricky) Ledford of Spruce Pine, North Carolina, Amber and (Scott) Hicks of Spruce Pine, North Carolina, and Ashley Doty of Elk Park, North Carolina.; Ten great-grandchildren; Kaylen and Karah Fields, Payton Spencer and Reagan Pittman, Jacob and Mason Ledford, Madison and Emily Banner, Eli and Ayden Hicks. In addition to several Nieces and Nephews. 

A celebration of life will be conducted on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017 at 7 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. 

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the service. Graveside will be Monday Sept. 11, 2017 at 11:00AM at Minneapolis Cemetery. Words of comfort and memories may be shared with the family and viewed at www.rsfh.net.


Vivian Irene M. Greer (Dec. 18, 1933 – Sept. 6, 2017)

Vivian Irene Moody Greer, 83 of Boone, passed away Wednesday evening, Sept. 6, 2017. She was a native of Watauga County and the daughter of the late Will George and Beuna Ella Trivette Moody. She had worked as a nursing assistant at Watauga Medical Center, Glenstone Health and Blowing Rock Extended Care Facility.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Greer. She is survived by a sister, Viola Greene of Hillsboro, N.C., a step-daughter Diane Jones and husband Jim of Texas, and a step-son, Tex Vernon Greer and wife Mary of Texas. A number of step grandchildren and great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Vivian Irene Moody Greer will be conducted Sunday, September 10, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the services from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Betty “Jewell” Green (April 22, 1948 – Sept. 8, 2017)

Mrs. Betty “Jewell” Green, 69, of Lenoir a former resident of Boone, passed away Friday, Sept. 8, 2017.

Mrs. Green is survived by two sisters, Paris Jenkins of Lenoir and Shirley Hayes of Taylorsville, two brothers, Howard Woodring and Clay Woodring both of Boone. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Ranzy Woodring and Vesta Phillips Woodring, two sisters, Geneva Woodring and Edith Tester.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017 at Hopewell Community Church at 2:00 o’clock. Reverend Edwin McKinney will officiate.

Geraldine Cote Miller (Aug. 24, 1933 – Sept. 9, 2017)

Angels lifted Geraldine Miller of Boone, to heaven today, into the arms of our Lord and the embrace of her late husband, Worth Miller. 

Born Aug. 24, 1933 in South Bend, Ind., she was the first of four children born to the late Lawrence G. Cote and Bridget (Brzezinski) Cote. 

Precious memories will be shared by her family, including her daughter, Susan Miller of Charlotte; her brother, Lawrence Cote and wife Nancy of Woodstock, Illinois; brothers-in-law Baxter Miller of Boone and Eugene Miller of Florida; her grandchildren, Scott Hanson and wife Lynne, Matthew VanHoughton and wife Cynthia, Michael Miller and wife Lauren, Jonathon Miller, Kristin Miller, Curtis Miller, James Miller and Nicholas Hanson; her great-grandchildren, Opal Deeter, Jackson Hanson, Aiden Miller and Sophia VanHoughton; daughter-in-law Erin Miller; her very special friend, Billie Main and many nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Worth Clyde Miller; her son, Donald Miller, and her sisters Sharon Phelps and Carol Travers.

Funeral services for Geraldine Cote Miller will be conducted Thursday afternoon, Sept. 14, 2017, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral home chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Chris Thayer. Burial will follow in Bethelview United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Rachel Sue “Mo” Carroll (Dec. 16, 1946 – Sept. 11, 2017)

Rachel Sue Carroll, known to her grandchildren as “Mo,”  70, of Meadowbrook Lane, Deep Gap, passed away Monday evening, Sept. 11, 2017, at Watauga Medical Center.

Mrs. Carroll is survived by her husband, Junior Carroll of the home; two daughters, Challe Talbot and husband Jeff of Boone, and Renee’ Carroll and her fiance James Beck of Winston-Salem; one granddaughter, Madison Johnson and husband Charles of Creston; three grandsons, Laiken South of Thomasville, Cole South of Thomasville, and Shane Talbot and his fiancee Evie Mare of Boone; one great-granddaughter, Saylor Johnson of Creston; one great-grandson, Jackson Johnson of Creston; one sister, Diana Miller and husband Forest of Deep Gap, and one brother, Paul Wyatt and wife Pam of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia.
