Reba Combs Propst (May 20, 1928 – Oct. 3, 2016)

Reba Combs Propst, 88, of Charlotte, a native and former resident of Watauga County, passed away Monday evening, Oct. 3, 2016, at Piedmont Fayette Hospital in Fayetteville, Georgia.

Mr. Harold G. Moody (June 4, 1953 – Sept. 30, 2016)

He is survived by his mother, Bertha Moody, one aunt, Madge Cornett, a number of consins, and many friends.

Funeral services for Harold Moody will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 oclock at the Mountain Dale Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Eric Cornett. The family will receive friends from 1 oclock until 2 oclock prior to the service at the church.

Larry Stanley (Feb. 9, 1939 – Sept. 29, 2016)

James Larry Stanley, 77, of Roan Mountain passed away on Sept. 29, 2016 at his residence.

A native of Dalton, GA, he was born Feb. 9, 1939 a son of the late John Rafie and Margie Eleanor Walston Stanley.

He retired from Baxter’s after 22 years serving in the maintenance department. Larry enjoyed going hunting with his bear hunting buddy’s and was a member of the Lower Shell Creek Christian Church.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Stanley and sister, Azalea Haywood, both of Georgia.

Larry has left to cherish his memory his wife, Margaret Tyler Stanley of the home; son, Lamar Stanley, and his wife Brenda, of Newland; grandsons, Blake and Nicholas Stanley; sisters, Dorris Benfield of Newland and Luvena Hixenbauch of Thompson, GA; step daughters, Brenda Jennings of Rome, GA, Angie Ellison, and her husband Chuck, of Rome, GA, Shelia Bryson, and her husband Jim, of Canton, GA; eight step grandchildren; two (with one on the way) step great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Larry Stanley will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 1, 2016 from the Grandfather Chapel of the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, with Larry’s dear friend, Elder Eddie McAllister and Pastor Gerald Holly officiating. Interment will follow in the Newland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour Saturday at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff of Mountain States Hospice for the wonderful care they provided to Larry, to the Lower Shell Creek Christian Church and the Newland Christian Church for the prayers, visits, and support. “May God Bless each of you”.

Agnes Robinette Pritchett (Aug. 7, 1924 – Sept. 28, 2016)

Agnes Robinette Pritchett, 92, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 28, at her home in Vilas, NC.

She was originally from Greene County, Tenn., born in Mosheim, on Aug. 7, 1924.

Her parents were Leonard Franklin Robinette and Willie Lee Everhart Robinette.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John A. Pritchett, Jr., one grandson, Walden James Pritchett, two brothers, Kenneth and J.L. Robinette, her foster sister Mildred Courtney and one nephew Marion Robinette.

Mrs. Pritchett attended Maryville College and East Tennessee State Teacher’s College where she met her husband John. They were married May 15, 1946. She taught at Oak Hill School, Johnson City, Tenn., from 1946 to 1947. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from George Peabody College, Nashville, TN in 1950.

She then lived in Monroe, LA, until 1956 when she and her family moved to Boone, N.C. She was a member of the Knob Creek Church of the Brethren and attended the Valle Crucis United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three children and spouses: J. Alfred and Lisa Pritchett, Charles L. and Joy Pritchett, Cassandra and Philip Mabe; eight grandchildren and spouses: Sarah and Ward Zimmerman, J. Levi Pritchett, Rebekah and Bobby Garcia, Mary and Luke Boudreault, Laura and Kenny Kaufman, Emily and Derek Wilcox, Matt and Megan Mabe, Cara and Kevin Schiffman; seven great grandchildren: Ward and Grey Zimmerman, Kayden and Caroline Kaufman, Molly Boudreault, Madeleine Mabe and Maddox Garcia; a dear brother and sister-in-law: Billy and Ruth Robinette, and ten beloved nieces and nephews.

Agnes was faithful and hard-working as a wife, mother, and grandmother, and on the family farm. She was dearly loved and respected by her family and many friends. She will be remembered for her caring nature, her beautiful smile and the enduring love of her family.

The viewing and graveside services will be private.

Following the burial at Monte Vista Cemetery, friends are invited to join the family for a celebration of her life on Sunday October 2 at 3:30 PM, 211 Sequoyah Drive, Johnson City. There will be a Memorial Service at Valle Crucis United Methodist Church on Sunday October 9 at 2:00 PM.

Mr. Robert Bentley (Jan. 22, 1930 – Sept. 27, 2016)

Robert R. Bentley, 86, of Hwy 105 South, passed away Tuesday evening, September 27, 2016 at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville. Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Geneva Anderson Bentley. Born January 22, 1930 in Watauga County, he was a son of Roby and Ollie Bentley. Robert was a member of Shulls Mills Baptist Church. He was a heavy equipment operator for more than 50 years. After retirement, he enjoyed building bird houses, gardening and sitting on his porch with family and friends.

He is survived by his children, Debra Aldridge and husband, Chip, of Foscoe and Dexter Bentley and wife, Glenda, of Vilas; sisters, Katie Shore and husband, Joe, Brenda Cornett and husband, R.A.; brothers, Sam Bentley and wife, Betty, Ned Bentley and wife, Wanda, and Bill Bentley and wife, Helen; brothers-in-law, J.C. Anderson and wife, Betty, Franklin Cole and J. B. Greene. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He is also preceded in death by sisters, Maggie Hicks, Earlene Lail, Pauline Townsend and Mary Ann Bentley, and brothers, Lewis and Reed Bentley.

Funeral services for Mr. Rob Bentley will be conducted Sunday afternoon, October 2, at 3 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Chad Cole. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 1:30 until 3 o’clock, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Graveside services will follow at the Shull Cemetery.

Lenny C. Hicks (May 13, 1962 – Sept. 27, 2016)

Lenny Clay Hicks, age 54, of Banner Elk, passed away Tuesday, September 27, 2016

He is survived by his uncles, Gordon and Ronda Hicks both of Banner Elk, uncle Ray Hicks of Mtn. City, TN. Aunts, Ora Bost of Hickory and Rosie Jean Williams of Banner Elk.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, September 30, 2016 at 2 p.m. in the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 12-2 p.m. prior to the service time.

Jacqueline Jewell Tindell (Feb. 13, 1928 – Sept. 26, 2016)

Jacqueline Jewell was born to Bernetta Bennett-Jewell and James Clarence Jewell in a large white, clapboard Central -Hall Colonial, in an unincorporated area of Caldwell County, Kentucky. The young family resided in the neighboring Cobb County, Kentucky.

Jacqueline was the first of 11 children born to Bernetta and James Jewell. Jacqueline was raised in a series of rented farms that her family worked for their own sustenance and income until her father found employment with the Tennessee Valley Authority, which through its new day program was making efforts to create parks, bridges and reservoirs beneficial ecologically to the country struggling through a depression.

At age 16, Jacqueline, Jack as her family called her packed a bag hopped on the back of a milk truck and rode into Hopkinsville, Ky, which was the nearest town of any size. There Jacqueline worked in a few restaurants as a waitress and made a home for herself at Mrs. Rozells Boarding House.

She met, dated and married Robert Henry Lee Bob another Kentucky native of military employment with the United States Army in December of 1946. The newlyweds moved almost immediately to Fayetteville, NC, home of Fort Bragg. Jackie and Bob Lee were blessed with a son, Gary Edwin Lee, born in Womack Army Hospital of Fort Bragg, NC on July 17, 1952. The couple later relocated to Oklahoma where Bob attended Officers Training and Flight School, upon graduation from both they returned to Fort Bragg and Fayetteville, NC

Jackie, as she had come to be known, met Rush Ronald Tindell at the Counter of The High Hat restaurant in Fayetteville, NC in 1953. She remembers the other girls there were talking about the young handsome soldier with the Long Eye Lashes. The two were introduced by friends, dated and were married in Dillon, SC on December 15, 1955. Rush, Jackie and Gary moved to Clarksville, TN for year as Rush was transferred with the United States Army to Fort Campbell for a year and then moved on the California as Rush was training at a missile in the nearby desert.

Jackie and Rush rented a patio home in the Grenada Hills neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley where they welcomed home their first child, a daughter Rhonda Kay Tindell, born July 10, 1957. Rush was transferred to the military base for Special Forces Training on the Island of Okinawa where the family lived from 1960-1964.

The family returned to Fayetteville and built a home in the Cottonade Subdivision of Fayetteville NC, where they welcomed home the last child, James Forrest Tindell, born in Womack Army Hospital on April 8, 1966.

The family resided in Fayetteville until December, 1988, when they decided to open and operate the The Tindell Inn, Bed and Breakfast of Seven Devils, NC This was a short lived venture for the family who after a year converted the commercial enterprise into a full time family residence and celebrated many great holidays in the log home and enjoying the North Carolina High Country.

Jacqueline lost her husband Rush to Cancer in July of 1999. She remained single the rest of her life and relocated to Charlotte, NC in December of 2004.

Jacqueline passed away in the grace and comfort of the Novant Hospice Ward, Presbyterian Hospital, Uptown-Charlotte, NC at 12:40pm on Sept., 26, 2016.

Her children were gathered around her immediately afterward.

Jacqulines funeral services will be held Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 2 oclock at the Perkinsville Baptist Church in a portion of Boone, NC. A burial will follow at The Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens. All who attend and care to are welcomed by the family to join afterward at Lodge near Blowing Rock for refreshments.
