Melvin C. Greene (May 26, 1935 – Oct. 17, 2016)

Melvin Clarence Greene, 81, of Highway 194 North, Boone, passed away Monday morning, October 17, 2016 at his home.

Born May 26, 1935 in Watauga County, he was a son of Lee and Pearl Jones Greene. Melvin was a member of Meat Camp Baptist Church. He operated 194 Produce Stand for l6 years after retiring from A&P Grocery Store in Boone as assistant manager. Melvin was a veteran of the U.S. Army. In his free time, Melvin enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Mr. Greene is survived by two sons, Alan Greene and wife, Sandy, and Barry Greene and wife, Beverly, all of Boone; grandsons, Chris Greene of Boone and Lee Greene and wife, Kaitlyn, of Bakersville; brother, Dallas Greene and wife, Mary, of Clarkston, Idaho; his companion, Jackie Hawkins of Boone; and one niece and four nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Foster Greene, grandson, Cody Lynn Greene; and brother, George Lee Greene.

Funeral services for Melvin Greene will be conducted Wednesday, October 19th, at 2 PM at Meat Camp Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Mike Townsend. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 PM, prior to services, at the church.

Military graveside services, provided by the American Legion Post 130, Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 90, and the U.S. Army, will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Frank W. Bennett, Jr., age 75, of Boone passed away Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

Mr. Bennett was born in Miami, Florida, the son of the late Frank Wesley Bennett, Sr. and Christine Lee Bennett. He served in the United States Air Force Reserve. He received a Bachelor degree in Psychology from Florida State University and was a retired insurance adjuster and stock broker.

Mr. Bennett is survived by one sister, Susan Broderick and husband Ken, of Boone, One nephew, Chris Broderick and wife Wendy of Newland, one niece, Kimberly Broderick, of Charlotte and one great niece, Christa Broderick, of Newland.

A memorial service for Mr. Frank W. Bennett, Jr. will be held at a later date.

Ellesha Franklin Hicks (Jan. 25, 1979 – Oct. 16, 2016)

Mrs. Ellesha Franklin Hicks, age 37, of 153 Zeb Street, Boone, died Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte.

ellesha-hicksEllesha was born January 25, 1979 in Watauga County, daughter of Maxie Shull Franklin and the late J.D. Franklin. She was the deli manager at Food Lion in Boone.

In addition to her mother, Ellesha is survived by her husband, Roger Hicks; one son, Caleb J. Hicks; one daughter, Jettie Lee Hicks, all of the home; two step-sons, Darren Hicks and Chris Hicks and wife Carrie, all of Kingsport, Tennessee; one sister-in-law, Jennifer Bradshaw of Boone; four brothers-in-law, Bo Bradshaw of Boone, Kenny Hicks of Kingsport, John Miller and wife Bobbie Jo of Mooresville, and Terry Byington of Church Hill, Tennessee; one uncle, Reverend Jerry Shull of Boone; five aunts, Gloria Parlier, June Barker, Nancy Berry, Jimmie Knoll, and Pat Shore, all of Boone, and a special cousin, Joanna Shore. She is also survived by and number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, J.D. Franklin, and her maternal grandparents, Fred and Jettie Shull.

Funeral services for Ellesha Franklin Hicks will be conducted Friday afternoon, October 21, 2016, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:00 until 2:00 o’clock.

Officiating will be Reverend Jerry Shull and Mr. Phil Berry. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon, from 12:00 until 1:45 PM, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Robert Drake Stewart (Aug. 9, 1933 – Oct. 15, 2016)

Mr. Robert Drake Stewart, age 83, of Boone passed away Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Deerfieldridge Assisted Living.

stewartRobert had a big heart and would help anybody out with any kind of problem, he was a very smart man. He retired at 39. He loved his stories and loved to ride motorcycles, and loved to fish at the beach and the Outer Banks. He started his fortune in the movie theater business, went in the army where he was an intelligence officer, then he went to Duke to get his degree in law. Dad always came through when you needed help and he loved his family above all.

Mr. Stewart is survived by one son, Duane Robert “Robbie” Stewart and wife Lisa, of Hickory and one daughter, Marie Stewart and husband, Michael Lonon of Farmville, Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Worth Stewart and Harriet Drake Rogers and one brother, Drew Stewart.

A memorial service for Mr. Robert Stewart will be conducted Monday, October 17, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Gordon Noble will officiate.

Janice E. Osborne (July 3, 1946 – Oct. 13, 2016)

She is survived by her husband, Jose Luis Alegria, two sons, Joel Osborne and wife Stefee of Sarasota, Fl., and Alan Osborne and wife Lori of Connelly Springs. Her mother, Anna Lee Miller of Blowing Rock. Two brothers, Carter Randall of Boone and Nathan Scott Randall of Florida. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Elyse Osborne.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 7 p.m. in the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel.

Louise Tate Cook (May 3, 1936 – Oct. 12, 2016)

Louise Tate Cook, age 80, Friendship Church Road, Boone, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at her home.

cookLouise was born May 3, 1936 in Watauga County, a daughter of Sam and Velma Brown Tate. She was an excellent seamstress. Louise sewed clothes for her children and husband with loving care. She made the dress for the best-dressed woman contest winner in Miami. “Mama” was the best “Country” cook there ever was and could make any dish delicious. Louise was a member of Middle Fork Baptist Church.

Louise is survived by her husband, Henry Cook of the home; one son, Gary Cook and wife Brenda of West Palm Beach, Florida; two daughters, Phyllis Cook Mendez of Pembroke Pines, Florida, and Lisa Cook Freeman and husband Bobby of Deep Gap; four granddaughters, Jennifer Cook of St. Claire Shores, Michigan, Melissa Mendez and Victoria Jones Bradley, all of Pembroke Pines, and Kimberly Matar and husband Jon of Boone; two grandsons, Chase Cook and wife Genevieve of Loxahatchee, Florida, and Clinton Freeman of Cary, North Carolina; three great-grandsons, Caleb Cook of Loxahatchee, Michael Matar, and Brennan Matar, both of Boone, and one sister, Martha Greer and husband James of Charlotte. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lois Greene and Sarah Glenn, and one brother, Bahnson Tate.

Funeral services for Louise Tate Cook will be conducted Sunday afternoon, October 16, 2016, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Dr. Daniel Featherstone. Burial will follow in Middle Fork Baptist Church Cemetery located at Tweetsie Railroad.

Georgia Parks Harmon (May 17, 1934 – Oct. 12, 2016)

harmonGeorgia Parks Harmon, age 82, of Laurel Branch Road, Vilas, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson.

Georgia was born May 17, 1934 in Smyth County, Virginia, a daughter of the late James Randolf Parks and Nina Tester Parks.
She was a homemaker and a member of Timbered Ridge Baptist Church.

Georgia is survived by three daughters, Sharon Stone and husband Luke of Lenoir, Alice Mitchell and husband Wallace of Eden, and Geraldine Harmon of Lenoir; two sons, Michael R. Harmon and wife Christine of Sugar Grove, and Larry D. Harmon and wife Cathy of Hudson, and one sister, Billie Stines of Boone. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 5 great great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy D. Harmon, two brothers, David Parks and James Edward Parks, and three sisters, Bessie Younce, Nancy Brown, and Bertha Shew.

Funeral services for Georgia Parks Harmon will be conducted Saturday afternoon, October 15, 2015, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Derick Wilson. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Elizabeth Howell (Oct. 9, 1938 – Oct. 11, 2016)

Mrs. Beth Goodwin Howell went to her eternal home on October 11, 2016.

Beth Goodwin Howell was born to W.R. (Doc) Goodwin and Charlene School Goodwin, Florida pioneers in Vero Beach, Florida.

At an early age, they moved to Ft. Pierce where Beth graduated from Dan McCarty High School. She attended Salem College, Winston-Salem, NC; transferring to Emory University. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority and awarded a BA degree in Elementary Education. There she met her soul mate and love of her life.

For the next 55 years they served United Methodist and Presbyterian USA churches in Florida and North Carolina.

Along with Bud, Beth truly loved serving others. Early in their ministry, she developed a love of sending cards, baking Sock-it-to-me cakes and preparing meals for everyone. She had an adventurous spirit and relished in traveling to destinations near and far. The thrill of meeting new people, learning about different cultures, enjoying God’s wonderful natural creations (especially waterfalls) and partaking of all kinds of cuisine was a delight. In fact, she used to say that “eating was an adventure”.

Beth enjoyed serving on the board of New Opportunity School for Women at Lees-McRae College and was active in the United Methodist Women. She also shared her love of playing the piano at Banner Elk United Methodist and other area churches when needed.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph “Bud” Howell pf Banner Elk/Hendersonville, NC, her son and Daughter-in law, Keith and Teresa Howell of Spring Hill, TN., and daughter Ileta Howell Silvia of Hendersonville, NC.; five grandchildren, Kenneth Howell of Seattle, WA., Andrew Howell of Spring Hill, TN., Alisa Howell of Spring Hill, TN., Michael Silvia of Hendersonville, NC. and David Silvia of Hendersonville, NC.; sister-in-law Sylvia Goodwin of Moore Haven, FL, nephews, Winston Goodwin Jr. of Lake Placid, FL. Christopher Goodwin of Lake Placid, FL:. and Mark Goodwin of Moore Haven, FL.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday October 29, 2016 at 1:00 PM at the Banner Elk United Methodist Church.

Ricky is survived by one daughter, Michelle Brown of the home; one son, Kevin Hicks of Mountain City; his father and mother, Joe and Wavel Hicks of Telford, Tennessee; one sister, Sherry Slocum and husband Gary of Telford; four grandsons, Aiden Holdaway, Riley Brown, Mason Brown, and Landon Hicks, all of Mountain City; one granddaughter, Emilee Hicks of Mountain City, and a future granddaughter, Isabella Osborne.

Funeral services for Ricky Hicks will be conducted, Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 2:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 1:00 until 2:00. 

The family will receive friends, Thursday from 1:00 until 2:00 at the funeral home, one hour prior to the service.
