Dewey Edward Culler (Sept. 27, 1944 – Oct. 16, 2017)

Dewey Edward Culler, age 73, of Misty Meadow Lane, Boone, passed away Monday afternoon, October 16, 2017, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Dewey was born September 27, 1944 in Watauga County, a son of Celia Culler and the late Odell Culler. He was a retired salesman for the Merita Bread Company.

In addition to his mother, Dewey is survived by his wife, Anne Welch Culler of the home; one son, Kenneth C. Evans, Jr. of Danville, Virginia; two daughters, Laurie Evans of Boone and Kimberly Evans of Charlotte; one grandson, Jordan Brown of Boone; one granddaughter, Katie Perkins of Winston-Salem; one great-granddaughter, Kinsley Brown of Boone, and one great-grandson, Mason Brown of Boone. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Alice Coffey; two infant brothers, Will and Ronnie Culler, and a brother, Jamie Culler.

Funeral services for Dewey Edward Culler will be conducted Friday afternoon, October 20, 2017, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Arvil Hardy, Pastor David Ward, and Pastor Gordon Noble. Burial will follow in the Culler Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service. At other times, friends may call at the residence, 146 Misty Meadow Lane, Boone.

Nancy Krenek Terrell (April 30, 1934 – Oct. 16, 2017)

Nancy Krenek Terrell, 83, of Appalachian Brian Estates in Boone, passed away Monday morning, October 16, 2017, at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Nancy is survived by two sons, Carl Sanders of Eastsound, Washington and Michael Sanders of Arcata, California, and two granddaughters, Anika Sanders of Eastsound, Washington and Serena Sanders of Seattle, Washington.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Richard and Bonnie Bird Krenek.

A Service of Remembrance for Nancy Krenek Terrell will be conducted Sunday afternoon, October 22, 2017, at 3:00 o’clock, at Appalachian Brian Estates in Boone.

Martin Neil Glassman (D. Oct. 14, 2017)

Martin Neil Glassman, 77, of Lake Worth, Florida and Beech Mountain, passed away Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, at Watauga Medical Center. Martin was born in New York City, son of the late Evelyn and Aaron Glassman. Martin and his wife Isabel lived in Lake Worth, Florida and spent their summers on Beech Mountain.

Martin is survived by his loving wife, Isabel Glassman; two sons, Daniel Glassman and wife Maggie of Gainesville, Florida and Stephen Glassman and wife Karen of Maitland, Florida; one daughter, Robyn Glassman of San Francisco, California; three grandchildren, Shanna, Benjamin, and Bodhi, and two step-daughters, Debra and Pamela.

Private services will be held in Lake Worth, Florida at a later date.

Mary Hampton Miller (Sept. 3, 1949 – Oct. 14, 2017)

Mary Hampton Miller, 68, of Castle Ford Road, Boone, passed away Saturday evening, Oct. 14, 2017, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.

Mary was a member of Boone Advent Christian Church, where she served as a Deacon. She was a homemaker and retired receptionist. Mary was a devoted, loving wife of 50 years, mother, and grandmother. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed being outdoors in God’s creation. She also enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting, and spending time with her grandson, with whom she shared a special bond. 

Mary is survived by her husband, Robert “Butch” Miller of the home; two daughters, Kristie Miller Yeatts and husband Jason of Winston-Salem, and Kara Miller Polston and husband Brent of Clemmons; a special grandson, Benjamin Kirk Polston of Clemmons; two sisters, Rachel Moody of Vero Beach, Florida, and Gwen McGougan of Lumber Bridge, North Carolina, and one brother, Fred Hampton of Landrum, South Carolina. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Stanley Kirk Miller; two sisters, Rebekah Hampton and Frances Howard, and her father and mother, Charles “Frosty” Hampton and Gwendolyn “Did” Hampton.

Private funeral services for Mary Hampton Miller will be conducted at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Gordon Noble. Burial will follow in the Hodges Cemetery in Boone.

A public Celebration of Life service will be conducted at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street NW, Lenoir, North Carolina, 28645, or to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 27103.

Charles Pittman (March 12, 1941 – Oct. 13, 2017)

Charles Evans Pittman, 76, of Pineola, North Carolina passed away on Friday, Oct. 13, 2017 at his residence.

He was born on March 12, 1941 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of the late Claude Pittman and the late Eula Clark Pittman.

Charles graduated from Cranberry High School, where he played on the football team. In 1971 He and his wife, Linda, started Pittman Nursery in Pineola. He was a member of the Linville Masonic Lodge and the Frank Presbyterian Church. He was a former Elder of the Pineola Presbyterian Church and was a Charter Member of the Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Crossnore. Charles enjoyed fishing, watching the Atlanta Braves Baseball, and was a proud former member of the Lick Log Hogs Softball Team. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a Son-In-Law, Tim Nelson.

Charles was a good neighbor and friend. Services for Charles Evans Pittman will be held on Monday, October 16, 2017 at 4:00 p.m.from the Grandfather Chapel with the Rev. Hal McNeely officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 2pm on Monday at the funeral home.

Louise Jackson (May 14, 1927 – Oct. 11, 2017)

Louise Jackson, 90, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017 at Spruce Pine Hospital in Spruce Pine, NC.

She was born on May 14, 1927 in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Joe Mathes and the late Frances Shade Mathes.

Louise was loved by everyone and will be greatly missed. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and spending time with her family and raising her grandchildren.

She was a member and treasurer of Community Methodist Church. 

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her Husband: Harrison Jackson Sr.; Sons, Harrison Jackson Jr. and Joseph Jackson; Grandson: Marcus Mathes; Sisters, Magnolia Jackson, Katie Avery; Brothers, Monty Mathes, William Bill Mathes and Eurol Mathes.

Home going services for Louise Jackson will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2017 beginning at 2:00PM at Oak Grove Baptist Church. with Rev. Wallace Wise and Rev. Mike Mathes and Rev. Russell Hoilman officiating. 

Interment will be in the Conley Chapel Cemetery following the service.

James Roy Brooks, Jr. (Oct. 11, 2017 – Oct. 11, 2017)

James Roy Brooks, Jr., infant son of James Roy “J.R.” Brooks, Sr. and Rebecca Woods, passed away Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 11, 2017, at Watauga Medical Center.

In addition to his parents, James is survived by one sister, Krystal Brooks of Mountain City, Tennessee; his maternal grandparents, Kelly and Susan Woods of Fleetwood, and his paternal grandfather, Tony Brooks of Lansing, North Carolina.

Memorial services for James Roy Brooks, Jr. will be conducted Saturday afternoon, at 3:00 o’clock, at the Daniel Boone Park in Boone.

Ernest Gwyn (Nov. 3, 1927 – Oct. 11, 2017)

Ernest Partee Gwyn, of 165 Old Cranberry St, Newland, NC passed away Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017, at home.

Ernest was born in Avery County to Gurney Clayton Gwyn and Flora Maebell Day Gwyn on Nov. 3, 1927.

During his career he farmed, sawmilled, landscaped and worked at Lees McCrae College. Ernest enjoyed gardening, his dog Brownie, his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mr. Ernest Gwyn is survived by two sons, Freddy Jonas Gwyn (Gail), Ernest Clayton Guinn (Sandra), one daughter, Gwendolyn Gwyn Benfield, five grandsons; Jason Gwyn(Heather), David Gwyn (Natasha), Jamie Guinn (Melissa), Cody Guinn (Samantha), Freddie Ross (Betsy); four granddaughters, Chiane Gwyn, Jessica Gwyn Stevens (Jeremy), Brittany Guinn Blair (Tim), Sereta Ross Calloway (Joe), Wendy Ross Thompson (Billy) ; eleven great-granddaughters; Laura Thompson, Selena Calloway, Lila Calloway, Sydney Calloway; Bella Ross, Jasmine Ross, Layken Blair, Ragan Blair, Payton Guinn, Briley Guinn, Gracie Guinn eight great-grandsons; Logan Stevens, Connor Stevens, Hunter Stevens, Matthew Thompson, Mattius Thompson, Joe Calloway, Cordell Ross, River Guinn, three step great-grandsons; Brandon Crawford, Sebastian Crawford, and Ethan Crawford; one sister, Inez Gwyn Horney; a number of nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a former wife Ella May Davis Gwyn Goshorn, three sons; Finley Allen Gwyn, Charles Randall Gwyn and Billy Joe Gwyn; two brothers, Warnie Gwyn and Beady Gwyn; five sisters, Joyce Gwyn, Georgie Gwyn Ward, Dorie Gwyn Moody, Bessie Gwyn Lee, Alice Gwyn Puckett; one great-granddaughter, Cheyenne Calloway and one great-grandson, Randall Thompson; daughter-in-law: Geraldine Turbyfill Guinn.

Graveside services for Ernest Partee Gwyn will be conducted on Oct. 13, 2017 at 2:00pm at the Elk Valley Cemetery in Banner Elk, NC. Officiating will be the Rev. Keith Russell. The family will receive friends at the Elk Valley Baptist Church from 1:00pm to 2:00 p.m. prior to going to the graveside for services in the Elk Valley Cemetery. A meal will follow at the Elk Valley Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
