Greta Mitchell Mast, 72 of Zionville, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 14, 2016 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Hazel Mitchell. She was a member of Willowdale Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Robert Hal Mast. Together Hal and Greta owned and operated a trucking company for 12 years. After selling that business they purchased Valley Grocery and operated it for 15 years. Greta never met a stranger and always had a smile for everyone who came in the store. She enjoyed many years of traveling and she loved spending time with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by one grandson, William R. Mast, Jr., and one brother Greer Mitchell.

She is survived by one son, William R. Mast, Sr., and wife Debbie of Zionville, one daughter Kimberly M Byrd, and husband Ray of Zionville, three brothers, James Mitchell and wife Carolyn of Baltimore, Md., Billy “Buddy” Mitchell and wife Nellie of Zionville, Gray Mitchell of Zionville, five sisters, Geraldine Mitchell of Zionville, Rita Hackney and husband Steve of Zionville, Mary Charlene Ward of Boone, Dinah Kaye Mitchell and husband Dexter of Vilas, Quita Dale and husband David of Morganton, N.C., one grandson Brandon Mast of Boone, two granddaughters, Jessica Wagner of Vilas, Ashley Eller and husband Jordan of Vilas, four great grandchildren, William Hunter Mast of Boone, Rylea Smith, Jack Smith, and Kinslee Wagner of Vilas. She is also survived by one uncle Ralph Greer of Zionville, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 2 p.m. in the Austin and Barnes Funeral Home chapel, officiating will be Rev. Dan Little. Burial will follow in the Mast Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home. At other times friends may visit at the home of Ray and Kim Byrd, 201 Mitchell Lane, Zionville.

Delores Combs Robinson, 66, of Mast Gap Road, Sugar Grove, passed away Saturday morning, Nov. 12, 2016, at Watauga Medical Center.

Delores was born June 19, 1950 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Willard and Ella Faye Harmon Combs. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church.

Mrs. Robinson is survived by one sister, Vickie Combs Greene and husband Dana, of Sugar Grove; one nephew, Jordan Greene and wife Mary of Denver, North Carolina; two nieces, Carla Parker and husband Corey, and Keri Lawrence all of Sugar Grove; four great nieces, Maddie Parker, Anabel Parker, and Anberlynn Lawrence, all of Sugar Grove and Selene Greene of Denver, North Carolina, and two great nephews, Alex Greene of Denver, North Carolina and Asher Flahart of Sugar Grove.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Robinson.

Funeral services for Mrs. Delores Combs Robinson will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 15, 2016, at 2:00 o’clock, at Westside Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend David Ward. Burial will follow in the Guy Combs Cemetery.

The family will receive Tuesday afternoon, from 1 until 2 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Jesse Boyd Brown 74, of Hudson, passed away Friday evening, Nov. 11, 2016 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson. Born August 7, 1942 in Watauga County, he was a son of John and Gladys Richards Brown. He retired from Municipal Utilities of Hudson. Jesse loved his family. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, and a good hike in the mountains.

Mr. Brown is survived by his partner of 30 years, Joanne Tilley; daughters, Janie Smart & husband, Maxwell, of Hildebran and Amanda Brown of Longview; step-son, Richard Tilley; two grandchildren, Ashley Kaczynski of Valdese and Corey Smart of Hildebran; two great-grandchildren, Jazmin Story and Noah Kaczynski, both of Valdese; sister, Dorothy Brown of Wilkesboro; and brothers, Eddie Brown and wife, Diane, of Boone, and Smith Brown of Hudson.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jimmy Boyd Brown and his parents.

The family will receive friends Monday afternoon, November 14th, from 1 until 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow visitation Monday afternoon, November l4th, at 2:30 at Meat Camp Baptist Church Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Mike Townsend.

Mary E. Caltrider (Oct. 24, 1937 – Nov. 9, 2016)

bigcaltrider-pic-1-1Mary Elizabeth Caltrider, age 79, of Boone, passed away Wednesday, November 9, 2016.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, a son Brock Caltrider, and a great granddaughter, Chesney Ward.

She is survived by two sons, Barri and wife Diane Caltrider of West Virginia, and Andrew Caltrider of Hanover, Pa. One daughter, Kimberly and husband Charles of Westminster, Md. Two sisters, Maude Wentz and Marge Frisbee both of Maryland. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren, including granddaughters Stephanie Ward and husband William, and Tanya Anderson.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 2 p.m. in Rutherwood Baptist Church. The family will receive friends prior to the services from 12:30-2:00 p.m. in the church.

Gerald Clark Adams (Aug. 28, 1932 – Nov. 9, 2016)

Gerald Clark Adams, 84, passed away on November 9, 2016 after a short illness.

Gerald, known to the Appalachian Nation as Mr. Yosef, was the Director of the Yosef Club from 1991 until September, 2016. During his tenure as director, over $33 million dollars was raised for student-athlete scholarships. Prior to this position, Gerald worked for 37 years in Pittsylvania County Schools (VA) serving as a teacher-coach at Brosville High School, principal at Coates Elementary and Blairs Jr. High Schools, and as assistant superintendent for personnel.

4001907_wlppGerald is survived by his loving wife and ultimate dance partner, Julia; their six children: Robert (Gwen) Adams of Holly Springs, NC; Richard (Becky Snead) Adams of Staunton, VA; Ann (Scott) Bullock of Elon, NC; Robin (Mark) Outler of Atlanta, GA; Debbie (Raymond) Fachko of Callahan, FL and George Harvard of Jacksonville, FL; 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, one sister, Rosalie Adams, and one brother, Perry (Norma) Adams, all of Salisbury.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clark and Ruby Adams, and his first wife, Barbara Setliff Adams. Adams received his BS (’54) and M.A. (’62) from Appalachian State Teachers College. He served in the Army Second Armored Cavalry from 1956-58. During his tenure in education, he served as president of the VA School Personnel Administrators, Pittsylvania County United Way, Westover Sertoma Club, Dan River, VA Phi Delta Kappa Chapter, and as Audit Director of the VA High School Coaches Association and Governor of the Sertoma Club West Central VA District. For his beloved ASU, he served as president of the Alumni Association, and as a member of the Board of Visitors. He was the recipient of the Alumni Outstanding Service Award, the University Advancement Outstanding Performance Award, and the Former Athletics Association Special Service Award.

Gerald’s funeral service, where he will be sporting his favorite gold jacket, and black and gold dancing shoes, will be held at 2:30 pm on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at Boone United Methodist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:30 PM. Officiating will be Pastor Leonard Bolick and Pastor Reggie Hunt. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens. A reception on the 5th floor of the Appalachian Athletics Complex overlooking Gerald’s favorite spot, the ASU Football Field will follow the burial. Officiating will be Pastor Leonard Bolick and Pastor Reggie Hunt.

Pall bearers are grandsons Thomas Adams and Garrett Bullock, and close friends Rick Beasley, Sam Boyd, Jack Bonnell, W.A. Cline, Doug Coley and Bobby Idol.

Ida Snyder Pardue (Feb. 28, 1922 – Nov. 8, 2016)

bigpardue3Mrs. Ida Snyder Pardue, age 94, of Camp Joy Road, Zionville, passed away Tuesday afternoon, November 8, 2016. Born in Johnson County, Tennessee, February 28, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Ira Washington and Elizabeth Amanda Dowell Snyder. Ida was a homemaker, she enjoyed gardening, canning, flowers, taking care of her grandchildren and family, and reading her Bible. She attended Antioch Baptist Church.

She is survived by four daughters, Margaret Grindstaff and husband Danny of Mountain City, Helen Pardue of Zionville, Patsy Courtner and husband Jerry of Mountain City, and Wanda Eldreth and husband Bobby of Boone, three sons, R. C. Pardue and wife Pat, Billy Ray Pardue and wife Bitha Lou and Danny Pardue and wife Christina all of Zionville, one sister, Flora Hess and husband John of Mountain City one brother, Claude Snyder of West Grove, PA, sixteen grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Will Pardue, two sons, Ronnie Pardue and J. C. Pardue and wife Frances, two sisters, Annie Morefield and Fannie Wilson, and five brothers, Charles, Stanley, Arthur, Eddie and John Snyder.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ida Pardue will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Antioch Baptist Church in Mountain City. Officiating will be Rev. Kenny Ray Vaught. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Bronson, Jason, Jared, Drew, Justin, Tony, Ricky, Cody and Travis.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 o’clock until 7:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. At other times friends may call at the residence.

Tanner is survived by his father and mother, Anthony Baumgardner and Tiffany Hicks of the home; his brother, Triston Baumgardner of the home; his maternal grandmother, Rebecca Hicks and husband William of Todd; his paternal grandmother, Marlene Wade and husband Don of Bristol, Tennessee, and his maternal great-grandmother, Wanda Hicks and husband Willis of Todd.

Graveside services and burial will be conducted Friday afternoon, November 11, 2016, at 2:00 o’clock, at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in the Meat Camp Community. Officiating will be Pastor Bruce Miller.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 until 9:00 o’clock, at Church Of The Deliverance.
