Mr. Charles Rives Crump, Jr., of Boone, lost his battle with polyarteritis nodosa on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at 12:38 PM. Born July 5, 1966 in Forsyth County, he was the son of the late Charles Rives Crump, Sr., and Susan Whitney Crump.
Rives is survived by his wife, P. Pamela Chanthaboury, his daughter, Sofia Crump, his mother, Susan Crump, his grandmother, Evelyn West, two step brothers and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorial services for Mr. Rives Crump will be conducted Saturday, May 19, 2018, at 11 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone. Officiating will be Rev. Jeff Smith and Rev. Jeff Sweeney. The family will receive friend following the service at the church. Iva Dean Day
(July 22, 1918 – May 3, 2018)
Iva Dean Norris Day, age 99, of West Grandview Heights, Boone, passed peacefully May 3, 2018 at home with family. Born July 22, 1918 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Granville and Mettie Mae Brown Norris. Iva Dean married her true love, Robert Carl Day in March of 1947. An angel in her own right, she taught Sunday school at First Baptist Church where she was a member since age 6. She retired after l4 years from the ASU Belk Library where she met and cared for many life-long friends. 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Jack and Finley Norris and sisters, Grace, Alley, and Virginia Norris.
Surviving are her son, Brett Day and wife, Gwyn; 4 step grandchildren, and 4 step great-grandchildren, all of Minnesota; daughter, Lisa Day of the home, granddaughter Molly Warren and husband, Martin, and beloved great-grandson, Wyatt Warren, all of Boone; granddaughter, Grace Wilson and partner, Jerry Blackwelder of Zionville; brother, Bobby Norris and wife, Doris, of Texas, and sisters, Betty Clinard of Millers Creek and Shirley Fisher. She is also survived by her dear and special friends, Dr. George and Ida Miles, Trisha Midgett, Linda Wagoner, and life-long neighbors, Linda and Kim Byrd. She will be dearly missed by her 4 legged feline companions, Spider Rose and Neo.
A celebration of Iva Deans life and for all she gave us will be held Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 2 oclock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Pastor Roy Dobyns. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services.

Arthur Webber (Art) Kohles
(August 19, 1949 – May 5, 2018)
Arthur Webber ‘ART’ Kohles, age 68, of Meat Camp Road, passed away Saturday evening, May 5, 2018 at Watauga Medical Center. Born August 19, 1949 in Fort Worth Texas, he was a son of the late Arthur Webber Kohles Sr. and Betty Kohles. Art was a US Army Special Forces Veteran, having served two tours of Duty in Vietnam. After his military service Art joined the NC Highway Patrol and was stationed in Whiteville, NC and Boone. He retired after 30 years of service. Art was a lifelong Episcopalian and was an active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Boone. He was a chalice bearer at St. Luke’s and enjoyed working on the Chapel. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed learning about the history of his native Texas. 
Mr. Kohles is survived by his wife, Pat Winebarger Kohles of the home; daughters, Melissa Kohles and Ophea Huntsman and husband Warren; grandchildren, Luca and Lola Kohles and Gabriel and Ragan Huntsman; brother, Randy Kohles and wife, Tai, and sister, Joanna Pelham and husband, Richard, all of Texas and a number of nieces.
A celebration of life service for Art Kohles will be conducted Wednesday evening, May 9th, at 6 o’clock at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, officiated by the Rev. Cyndi Banks. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 130. A reception will follow services at the church.

Mrs. Martha Greene Calloway, age 87, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2018, in Concord, NC. Mrs. Calloway was a lifelong resident of Boone, NC.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 – 2:00 pm, Wednesday, May 9th, 2018, at Oak Grove Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Gerald Hodges officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.
Mrs. Calloway was born August 27th, 1930 in Boone, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Bessie Greene. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Calloway was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. C.P. Calloway, her sisters Stella, Polly, Pauline, and Rachel and brother, Warren.
Mrs. Calloway is survived by her three children, Annie Calloway of Southern Pines, Andy Calloway and his wife, Kim, of Concord and Clifton Calloway and his wife, Shon, of Rock Hill, SC. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Mollie, Dana, Casey, Sally, Garrett and Luke as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Calloway was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and employee at Appalachian State University. Mrs. Calloway is remembered as a talented and avid seamstress, cook and gardener.

Pearl Wilson Fletcher
(December 26, 1925 – May 5, 2018)
Mrs. Pearl Wilson Fletcher, age 92, of Odes Wilson Road, Zionville, and wife of the late Ralph Fletcher, passed away Saturday morning, May 5, 2018 at Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care in Hudson. One of thirteen children, Mattie Pearl was born December 26, 1925 in Watauga County to James Baxter and Lillie Thelma Wilson. Mrs. Fletcher was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She loved the Lord and always enjoyed reading her Bible daily. As a young adult, Pearl moved to Lynchburg, Virginia and worked for a time at Blue Bell, manufacturer of overalls and jeans. She returned home to the Zionville community where she met and married the love of her life, Ralph Blaine Fletcher in 1949. Together, they raised their family. As a homemaker, Pearl canned the harvest from her vegetable gardens to sustain the family during the year. She was known for making wonderful jams and jellies from berries picked by the family, as well as apple butter and other good things. She always loved her flower gardens until poor health prevented her from tending to them. In her spare time, she enjoyed quilting and making afghans. 
Mrs. Fletcher is survived by her son, Blaine Fletcher, and daughter, Elaine Simcox and husband, Mike, all of Zionville; grandson, Michael Fletcher of Thomasville; sisters, Annabelle Martin and husband, Asa, of Zionville and Emma Jean Blackburn and husband, Bill, of Todd; brothers, Estle Snook Wilson and wife, Etta, of Lynchburg, VA and Jerry Wilson of Zionville; sisters-in-law, Bernice Wilson and Bertha Wilson, both of Zionville, and Wanda Wilson of Trade, TN. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Edith Wilson, Edna Tester and Iva Lee Reese; and brothers, Henry, Jim, J.B., Clayton Cricket, and Burl Wilson.
Funeral services for Pearl Wilson Fletcher will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, May 8th, at 2 oclock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Derick Wilson and Rev. Bill McGuire. LaVaughn Greene Klutz, at 89, of Winston-Salem, a native and former resident of Blowing Rock, wife of Sonny Klutz, passed away Thursday morning, May 3, 2018, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
LaVaughn was born March 30, 1929 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Jarvis and Willie Eulala Day Greene. LaVaughn was a caring wife, mother, and grandmother. She cared for her family, friends, and everyone who crossed her path. She worked alongside her husband as co-owner of Sonny’s Grill for over 50 years. She worked at Hartley’s Interiors for many years as a professional seamstress. LaVaughn was an avid gardener and landscaper. She used her cooking skills to nurture her family, friends, and fellow community members in need. She was a faithful Christian and attended Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. Later, she joined First Baptist Church of Blowing Rock and was an active member for many years.
LaVaughn is survived by two daughters, Amanda Klutz and Katrina Sachs, both of Winston-Salem; one son Tommy Klutz and wife Ruth of Blowing Rock; three brothers, Max Greene and wife Jan, and Taylor Greene and wife Margie, all of Vero Beach, Florida, and Arthur Greene and wife Jeanette of Blowing Rock; one granddaughter, Lily Sachs of Blowing Rock; one grandson, Jason Klutz and wife Jennifer of Boone; three great-grandchildren, Sayleigh Grace Klutz, Miles Christian Klutz, and Matthew Taylor Klutz and wife Marlis, and three great great-grandchildren, Jaydon, Bella, and Matthew. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sonny Klutz; four brothers, Frank, Pete, J.W., and Perry Greene; one sister, Leola Moore, and one grandson, Thomas Matthew Klutz.
Funeral services for LaVaughn Greene Klutz will be conducted Sunday afternoon, May 6, 2018, at 4:00 o’clock, at First Baptist Church of Blowing Rock. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 2:00 until 4:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Rusty Guenther. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:45 at the church, prior to the service.

Bonnie Lake Hollars, age 89, of Sumpter Cabin Creek Road, Blowing Rock, passed away Thursday morning, May 3, 2018, at Watauga Medical Center in Boone.
Bonnie was born June 11, 1928 in Barnstaple, England, a daughter of the late Alfred and Florence Alford Lake. She was the retired head cook at Blowing Rock Hospital.
Bonnie is survived by one daughter, Sheila Hollars Lee of the home; one son, Terral Lee Hollars and wife Judy of Newport News, Virginia; three granddaughters, Cathy Hollars of Newport News, Tabitha Dancy of Blowing Rock, and Jessie Miller and husband Trevor of Sanford, North Carolina, and one grandson, Matthew Hollars of Newport News. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billie Dean Hollars; one daughter, Sherrie Helen Hollars; three brothers, and two sisters.

Clyde S. Miller, age 75, of H. Stanley Miller Road, Deep Gap, passed away Sunday afternoon, May 6, 2018, at his home.
Clyde was born May 9, 1942 in Watauga County, a son of the late Howard Stanley Miller and Ruth Elizabeth Greene Miller. He was a retired truck driver for Hollar and Greene Produce and a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
Clyde is survived by his wife, Pansy Phillips Miller of the home; two daughters, Pam Cook and husband Morris of Cumming, Georgia, and Kim Miller of Vilas; one son, Sonny Miller and wife Chris of Vilas; one brother, Kermit Miller and wife Jane of Fleetwood; one sister, Loretta Gentry and husband Leslie of Deep Gap; three granddaughters, Candace Barker and husband Nathan of Deep Gap, Charity Ward and husband Zane of Vilas, and Megan Tanju and husband Al of Cumming, Georgia; three grandsons, Daniel Cook of Cumming, Georgia, Averey Gonzalez of Stony Fork, and Chase Miller of Vilas, and four great-grandchildren, Elijah Ward, Silas Barker, Beyza Tanju, and Josey Ward. He also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Jordan Cook and Cameron Gonzalez, and one brother, Jimmy Miller.

Faye Rayfield Goodnite, age 95, of Boone, passed away Monday morning, May 7, 2018, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone.
Faye was born January 9, 1923 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late George and Ada Rose Miller Rayfield. She was a retired beautician.
Faye is survived by two brothers, Dean Rayfield of Boone, and Gene Rayfield of Sugar Grove, and one sister, Nancy L. Rayfield Mcleod of Boone.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cleve Goodnite; four brothers, James, Don, Albert, and Johnny Rayfield, and one sister, Ruby Greene.
Funeral services for Faye Rayfield Goodnite will be conducted Thursday afternoon, May 10, 2018, at 1:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:30 until 1:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Gordon Noble. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

Joseph Larry Waters
August 17, 1934 – May 2, 2018
Our beloved Father, Grandfather, and friend Joseph Larry Waters, Jr. passed away May 2 in Banner Elk, NC. Born August 17, 1934 to Joseph Larry Waters, Sr and Grace Waters Smith in Savannah, Georgia, Joe rests now after 83 years of fulfillment. A born polymath, he distinguished himself as a research chemist at Tennessee Eastman in Kingsport and subsequently as an entrepreneur. Always his life was enriched by deep artistic sensibilities, most especially through music. His perfectly pitched, sensitively controlled tenor voice was heard in solo performance at an early age in Savannah, in the summer Theater Under the Stars in Atlanta (1957) and ever after in fine church choirs wherever he resided in Tennessee or North Carolina. 
Joe earned degrees from Armstrong Junior College, Savannah (1953); Mercer University, Macon, Georgia (1955, with honors); and the University of Georgia, Athens (1957) His father a chemist before him, Joe joined Tennessee Eastman as a research chemist. He soon proved himself invaluable exploiting both his keen scientific understanding and his great verbal gift, traveling on three continents for the company. Many compliments acknowledged his rare pairing of abilities.
In Kingsport, TN he met and married Frances Lee Earnest. Their sons Evan Scott Waters (Piney Flats, TN) and Walter Laurence “Larry” Waters (Louisville, KY), along with Larry’s wife Katheryne, and their children Caroline and John Campbell Waters, cherish their memory with hymns of thanksgiving.
Intellectually and physically vibrant throughout his life, Joe recently enjoyed a river cruise along the Danube and Rhine and a previous visit to the Greek Islands. He joyfully collaborated with Evan, recently returned to Tennessee from Arizona, in upgrading the family lake house. They both also shared in serious choral pursuits.
Often Joe travelled to Louisville, a city he came to love, exploring it with his son and grandchildren. His pride in his sons, their achievements, and in his grandchildren knew no bounds. Joe died a happy man, full of age, blessing, and joy for everything they meant to him.
A Private Vigil will be held at Holy Cross Episcopal Church on Sunday, May 6 at 12:45 pm. Interment will be at a later date at St. Mary’s of the Hills in Blowing Rock, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Music Ministry at Holy Cross Episcopal Church (122 Skiles Way, Banner Elk NC 28604) or to the Music Ministry at St. Mary’s of the Hills Episcopal Church (140 Chestnut Drive, Blowing Rock, NC 28605.)
Lavola Fields Taylor
April 6, 1932 – May 5, 2018
Lavola Fields Taylor, age 86, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at her home in Newland surrounded by her family.
She was born on April 6, 1932 in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Warnie Fields and the late Pearle Ward Fields.
She retired from Glen Raven Mills and Baxter Travenol. She enjoyed working for many years after retirement as a CNA and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was an avid doll collector. Lavola loved to go to yard sales.
She was preceded in death by her Husband, Ben “Bill” Wiley Taylor, Sr; Son, Ben “Benny” Wiley Taylor, Jr.; Sisters, Peggy, Marie, Beulah, Roma Jean; and a Granddaughter, Jessica Rene’e Puckett; .

Betty Jean Shirley, age 82, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at Mission Hospital in Ashville, North Carolina.
She was born on October 19, 1935 in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of George C Shirley and Bertha Blalock Shirley.
Betty worked 35 years with Avery County Department of Social Services. She was currently working part time at Mountain Electric. She was a charter member of Newland United Methodist Church, she had served as the church secretary. Betty loved spending time at the beach, she really loved spending time with her Great Nephew Andrew Whaley.

Services for Betty Jean Shirley will be held on Friday, May 11, 2018 beginning at 7:00PM at Newland United Methodist Church with Rev. Gene Ammons officiating.
The family will receive friends beginning at 5:00PM on Friday, May 11, 2018 at Newland United Methodist Church.
Interment will be in the Happy Valley Memorial Park, Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 11AM.

Betty Jo Eller Puckett
November 13, 1931 – May 6, 2018
Betty Jo Eller Puckett , age 86, of Banner Elk, North Carolina passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at the Watauga Medical Center in Boone, NC.
She was born on November 13, 1931 in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Eugene Eller and the late Julia Trivette Eller.
Betty was a member of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Banner Elk and had retired from Cannon Memorial Hospital after many years working in the housekeeping department. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles.Her happiest moments revolved around the holidays and birthdays, which brought her family together. Betty once said “Family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, bring me the most enjoyment in life.”
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, William Puckett; Five Sisters, Kate Brewer, Mary Eller Smith, Grace Goodwin, Margaret Thompson, Rachel Garner; Six Brothers, Cecil Eller, Gene Eller, Dean Eller, Pat Eller, Roland “Dutch” Eller, Carl Eller.
Betty Jo leaves behind to cherish her memory her: Daughters, Billie Jo (Bill) Frontz of Myrtle Beach, SC, Janet (Rusty) Trammel of Banner Elk, NC, Sons, Timothy Puckett of Banner Elk, NC, Todd (Judith Bowden) Puckett of Linville, NC, Sister, Lula Eller Smith of Banner Elk, NC Grandchildren, Jessica (Byron) Clawson, Natasha (Glenn) Griffith, Sean (Jennifer) Puckett, Shane (Hailey) Puckett, Brandon (Michelle) Frontz, Kyle (Nicole) Trammel, Carly (John) Woods, Riley Puckett and Thirteen great grandchildren.
Services for Betty Jo Eller Puckett will be held on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 beginning at 7:00 pm from the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. George Wright officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 5:00 pm on Wednesday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
Interment will be in the Bill Puckett Family Cemetery on Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m.

Susan Daniels, age 57, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Monday, May 7, 2018 at her Home in Newland, North Carolina.
She was born on May 18, 1960 in Mcdowell County, North Carolina, a daughter of Joe Daniels and Barbara Carpenter Daniels.
She was preceded in death by her; Son, Justin Vaughn Daniels.
Susan was a member of First Baptist Church Crossnore. She loved flowers, Crocheting, and Cooking. She had a great sense of humor. She enjoyed being a mom and it brought her happiness everyday. She also loved her family along with her chickens and her dog Macey. She liked to have fun and enjoy life. She would always put others before herself. She overcame a lot of hardships in her life. She was a phenomenal sister and she loved Vaughn more than anything else in the world.
Susan leaves behind to cherish her memory her: Parents, Husband of 34 Years, Vaughn Daniels of Newland, NC; Son, Joey (Kayla) Daniels of Jonas Ridge, NC, Two Sisters: Dawn (Terry) Barnett of Charlotte, NC, Carla (Benjy) Edwards of Newland, NC; Two Grandchildren: Weston and Axyl of Jonas Ridge, NC; Niece: Lyndsay (Andrew) Collins of Sharon, SC; Nephew: Tyler (Fiancée Courtney Vaughn) Edwards of Johnson City, TN.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
