Edna Lou Franklin, age 76, of Jonas Ridge passed away on May 10, 2016 at her residence.

Edna was a member of Jonas Ridge Baptist Church.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, cooking, taking care of children and spending time with her grandchildren.

Along with her parents, Edna was preceded in death by her: husband, William Franklin; sister, Elenore Bledsoe.

A very special lady who loved kids and was loved by everyone, Edna has left to cherish her memory her: daughter, Rebecca Lynn Woodie of Jonas Ridge; son, Wayne Franklin and wife of April of Jonas Ridge; granddaughters, Alisha Woodie of Jonas Ridge, Ariel Franklin of Chapel Hill; sister, Clara Adams of Morganton; many special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Edna Lou Franklin will be conducted on Friday, May 13, 2016 at 8:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. Donald Gragg officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour at the funeral home. Interment services will be Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 10:45 a.m. in the Jonas Ridge Cemetery

Sarah Elizabeth Vance Libera (Nov. 1, 1924 – May 10, 2016)

Sarah Elizabeth Vance Libera, age 91, of Linville Falls passed away on May 10, 2016 at Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation.

A native of Avery County, she was born November 1, 1924 a daughter of the late Dempsey and Mae Ollis Vance.

She was a graduate of Crossnore High School where she played basketball and went on to play for 2 years for Semi-Pro Basketball.

Elizabeth was a member of Altamont Methodist Church and enjoyed painting.

Along with her parents, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her brother, Sammy Vance; sister, Katherine Stewart.

Elizabeth has left to cherish her memory her children Bobby Libera and wife Joanne of Forest City, Connie Body and husband Robert of Gadsden, AL, Billy Libera and wife Regina of Murrells Inlet, SC; sisters, Betty Benton of Hickory, Carolyn Vance of Hickory, Barbara Jean Vance of Morganton; brothers, John Henry Vance of Murrells Inlet, SC, Willis Ray Vance of Collettsville, Kenneth Vance of Lenoir; 6 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild.

Funeral services for Sarah Elizabeth Vance Libera will be conducted on Friday, May 13 at 11:00 a.m. at the Altamont Methodist Church with interment to follow in the Pisgah Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 12 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Altamont Methodist Church or to Hospice of the Blue Ridge in Mitchell County.

William O. “Bill” Smith, Jr. (Jan. 20, 1930
- May 9, 2016)

Mr. William O. “Bill” Smith, Jr., 86, of Country Place Drive, Boone, formerly from the Daytona Beach area, passed away suddenly Monday evening, May 9, 2016 at his home.

Bill was born January 20, 1930 in Washington, D.C, son of the late William Oscar Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth Rose Flynn Smith. 

A U.S. Navy Veteran, he graduated from Samford University School of Pharmacy and retired as the Director of Pharmacy at Ormond Beach Memorial Hospital, Ormond Beach, Florida in 1992.

Bill was also the owner of Smith’s Rexall in Edgewater, Florida from 1961 to 1971, was the Pharmacist at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida, served as President of the Southeastern Society of Hospital Pharmacists from 1992 to 1993, and was named Pharmacist of the Year in 1987 by the Florida Society of Hospital Pharmacists. He was also a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Bill is survived by his wife of ten years, Carolyn Compton Smith, of the home; five daughters, Julie Ann Smith of Atlanta, Bonnie Jean Smith and husband Alan of Daytona Beach, Florida, Patti Smith Roe and husband Morgan of Winter Haven, Florida, Brenda Smith Wallace and husband Joe of Hickory, North Carolina, and Marietta James and husband Russell of College Station, Texas; two sons, Randy Compton and wife Brenda of Decatur, Texas, and Wendell Compton and wife Rebecca of Southlake, Texas; and twenty-one grandchildren: Cassidy Turley, Katelyn Turley, Haley Turley, Heather Turley, Ethan Turley, Apryl Smith, Stephen Roe, John Morgan Roe, Abigail Roe, Julia Roe, Joshua Roe, Daniel Roe, Matthew Roe, Bradley Wallace, Brandon Wallace, Jena Wallace, Daniel Compton, Jason Compton, Alexandra Compton, Megan James and Peyton James. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-two years, Mary Anne Eustace Smith, and two sisters, Louise Smith Vinzant and Dorothy Smith Kirchoff.

Funeral services for Mr. William O. “Bill” Smith, Jr. will be conducted Friday afternoon, May 13, 2015, at 2:00 o’clock at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 12:00 until 2:00. Officiating will be Reverend Bud Russell.

Military rites and burial, provided by American Legion Post 130 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon, from 12:00 until 2:00, at the church, prior to the service.

Mrs. Mary C. Haile (Jan. 21, 1932 – May 9, 2016)

Mrs. Mary Frances Cook Carlton Haile, 84, of Mountain City, and formerly of Boone, passed away Monday morning, May 9, 2016. Born January 21, 1932, she was a daughter of the late John and Nellie Benson Cook. Mary was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church. She retired from ASU as the manager of the telephone office.

She is survived by one son, Andrew Carlton and wife Secellia, of Old Fort, one brother, Ted Cook of Boone, five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews and her special friend and caregiver, Pamela Carlton of Mountain City. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband William G. Haile, one son, Ray Carlton, one sister, Betty Cook Crawford, and one brother, Jack Cook.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Frances Cook Carlton Haile will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, May 11th at 2 o’clock at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Bud Russell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon prior to the service from 1 until 2 o’clock at the church.

Allen Winebarger (April 26, 1947 – May 8, 2016)

Allen Winebarger, 69, of Newland, passed away, Sunday, May 8, 2016 at his residence.

A native of Avery County, he was born April 26, 1947, a son of the late Nicholas Forrest Winebarger and the late Mary Gertrude Turbyfill Winebarger.

He graduated from Newland High School and entered the United States Army. He served his country during the Vietnam War and was Honorably Discharged with the rank of SP-5. Upon his return to Avery County, he attended Mayland Technical College, earning his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice.

He retired after over 40 years of service to the Linville Resorts.

Allen attended the Newland Christian Church and enjoyed hunting and fishing, and most of all watching his grandkids play sports.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Kay Church Winebarger; a daughter, Angela Nichole Winebarger; sisters, Evelyn Brubaker, Nancy Frisbee, and Tina Buchanan; and a brother, David Winebarger.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his daughters, Kristie Lea Winebarger of Newland, Kimberly Lynn Nelson, and her husband, Stanley, of Newland; sister, Brenda Stanley, and her husband, Lamar, of Newland; brothers, Buddy and Debbie Winebarger of Montezuma, Bobby and Karen Winebarger of Burnsville, Bruce Winebarger of Marion; grandchildren, Heaven Nelson and Dillon Nelson; a host of nieces and nephews, including Nicholas and Blake, who spent a great amount of time with Allen.

Funeral services for Allen Winebarger will be held at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2016 in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Nick Daniels officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Family, friends and pallbearers will gather at the funeral home on Thursday morning at 10:00 am to go in procession to the Newland Cemetery where Military Honors will be provided by the Pat Ray Post of the VFW. Pallbearers will be: Roy Childress, Lloyd Ray Jaynes, Randy Singleton, Bros Ollis, David Cook, David Wise, Tyler Stines, Robert Wise, and Donald Padgett.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Mary Metzger and her fellow nurses and the staff of Medi Home Hospice of Avery County.

Jimmy Winfield Mackie (July 18, 1940 – May 7, 2016)

Jimmy Winfield Mackie, age 75, of the Cranberry Gap Community passed away on May 7, 2016 at Brian Center in Spruce Pine.

A native of Avery County, Jimmy was born July 18, 1940 a son of the late Walter “Runt” and Katherine Foster Mackie.

In addition to his mother and father, Jimmy is proceeded in death by his: wife of 42 years, the late Sara Hughes Mackie; three brothers, Dean, Larry and Eugene; three sisters, Nancy, Judy and Martha; a nephew, Matthew.

Jimmy has left to cherish his memory his: son, Christopher James Mackie of Cranberry Gap; “daughter”, Twana Blair Roberts and husband Craig of Elk Park, NC; nephews, Kevin Mackie, Steven Mackie, Little Dean Mackie, Jr., Jackie Banner, Michael Banner; nieces, Angela Mackie, Stephanie Mackie, Roxanne Harte, Sabrina Hill; and very close friends, Blue Blair, Freddie Brown, Darrell Callahan and Jordan Corrigan.

Jimmy was retired from NC DOT. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and working in his garden.

All friends and family will gather at the home of Dorian and Brenda Blair in Minneapolis, NC. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 12th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with services to follow at 8:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Hazen T. Woodring (Sept. 26, 2003 – May 6, 2016)

Mr. Hazen Thomas Woodring, age 12, of Jefferson and formerly of Boone, passed away Friday, May 6, 2016 at the Ashe County Hospital.

BigHazen WoodringHazen was born September 26, 2003 in Buncombe County. He was a member of Faith Bridge Methodist Church. Hazen was a blessing to anyone who knew him. He had an infectious smile and touched the hearts of everyone he met. He was the poster child for happiness. He had many teachers, therapists, and classmates who became family to him. Hazen loved to snuggle, eat cheesecake, watch fireworks, and listen to music – his favorite was anything by Johnny Cash.

He is survived by his parents, Jennifer Miller and Richard Ward of Jefferson, a half-sister, Lindsay Woodring of Boone, his grandparents, Sharon and Dave Winebarger of Deep Gap and Martha Ward of Sugar Grove, special cousins, James and Ashley Miller of Todd, and a number of aunts and uncles and cousins.

A service to celebrate the life of Hazen Thomas Woodring will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, May 11, 2016 at 4:30, at Faithbridge United Methodist Church. James Frank “Jamie” Culler (Dec. 9, 1957
- May 7, 2016)

James Frank “Jamie” Culler, 58, of Howard’s Creek Road, Boone, passed away Saturday evening, May 7, 2016, at Watauga Medical Center.

Jamie is survived by two daughters, Emily Culler and husband Chris of New York City, and Natalie Angel of Boone; his mother, Celia C. Culler of Boone, and one brother, Dewey Culler and wife Ann of Boone. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Odell Culler, and one sister Mary Alice Coffey.

A private memorial service for James Frank “Jamie” Culler will be held at a later date.

Miss Callie Corinne Greer (March 30, 1934 – May 5, 2016)

BigGreer, CallieCallie Corinne Greer, 82, passed away peacefully at the Henry Etta and Bruce Hinkle Hospice House in Davidson County, NC, on May 5, 2016, after years of declining health.

Corinne was a long term resident at Brian Center in Lexington and before that, at Hickory Manor in Hickory, NC.

Corinne was born to A. Alfonzo and Dorris Billings Greer in Moorewood in Custer County, Oklahoma, on March 30, 1934. Her family moved to Butler, Tennessee, and then later to Vilas in Watauga County, NC. She graduated from Cove Creek High School in 1952 and from Lees-McRae College in 1954. Corinne also lived in Moscow, Idaho, for a short time when she was a young adult. She lived with her mother and brother, Abner, in Vilas for many years. She was a long-time member of Willowdale Baptist Church in Vilas, NC, where she played the piano and taught Sunday School. She loved her Church.

Corinne was preceded in death by her mother and father, as well as an older sister, Maisie Greer Barton (Wilson) of Dillwyn, Virginia; two older brothers, Edmund Greer ( Pansy) of Lynchburg, VA, and Abner Greer of Vilas, NC.; and a younger sister, Bobbie Jean Greer Edmisten (Earl) of Harmony, NC. Surviving are an older brother, Frank Greer (Ann) of Lexington, NC, and many other relatives.

The family wishes to express our thanks for the kind and loving care Corinne has received by many special volunteers, nursing assistants, and nurses through the years.

A memorial service is planned for Wednesday morning, May 11, 2016 at 11:00, at Willowdale Baptist Church in Vilas, NC, officiated by Pastor Eugene Braswell. Family and friends are welcome to attend. Herbert Dean Watson, age 80, of Fleetwood, died Thursday, May 5, 2016 at the Frye Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Watson was born August 29, 1935 in Ashe County, a son of the late Noah Watson and Eva Church Watson. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.

Mr. Watson is survived by one daughter, Amy Yoder of Newton; one son Richard Watson of Statesville; one brother, Hobert Watson and wife Jewell of Vilas; and 2 grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Hunter Watson, his parents, Noah and Eva Church Watson, six sisters and five brothers.

Funeral services for Herbert Dean Watson will be conducted Sunday afternoon, May 8, at 3:00 o’clock at Trinity Baptist Church. Officiating will be Reverend Nathan Caparolie. Burial will follow in the Gap Creek Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, from 2:00 until 3:00 o’clock, at the church, on hour prior to the service.
