Shirley A. Haner 
(February 16, 1942 – February 25, 2018) 

    Shirley Rathbone Haner, 76, of Valle Crucis, NC peacefully passed away at Life Care Center of Banner Elk on February 25, 2018, following a lengthy illness.
    Born in Yancey County NC in 1942 then moving to and living in Henderson County, NC until 1986, Shirley was previously married to S.G.Norton, Jr. Of Dana NC and is survived by a daughter Phyllis Drake, son in law Jeff and grandson Zachary Drake.
    Remarrying in 1986 to Ralph Haner and moving to Valle Crucis NC, Shirley worked almost 20 years at Appalachian State University. Her hard work, dedication and love for her family and friends will be missed. All who knew her loved her and her spark and strength was admired.
     In addition to her daughter and family, surviving are her siblings Betty Banther and Sheila Floyd of Hendersonville and Dean Rathbone of Silver Bay Minnesota. Preceding in death were her daughter Tania Zamani and her sister Sandra Nodurft.
    There will be no funeral service or visitation. Cremation will be at Austin and Barnes Funeral Home. A memorial celebration will be announced at a later date.

Lewis Council Brown 
(July 22, 1924 – February 27, 2018) 

    Lewis Council Brown, age 93, of Glenbridge Health Care and Rehabilitation, and formerly of Fox Hill Road, Vilas, passed away February 27, 2018 at Glenbridge. 
    Born July 22, 1924 in Watauga County, he was a son of Steve Roscoe and Beulah Moody Brown. Mr. Brown was a member of West View Baptist Church and was a retired carpenter. He served in the US Marine Corp during WWII. Lewis enjoyed working, building, and most of all, tending to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 
    Mr. Brown is survived by four grandchildren, David Shore, Lisa Roark, JoEllen Carpenter and Northa Leigh Messenger; four great-grandchildren, Kristina Messenger, Lucas Clawson, and Nevin and Tyler Shore; niece, Beulah Hayes and husband, Ken; great-nephew, James Hayes; and great-nieces, Becky Warren and Suzy Moffitt. 
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Harmon Brown; son, David Walker; daughter, Northa Lee Walker; sisters, Mabel Deal and Faye Nelson; and brothers, Roy and Roscoe Brown. 
    Funeral services for Lewis Brown will be conducted Saturday afternoon, March 3rd, at 3 oclock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Mike Townsend. Military graveside services provided by the American Legion Post #130 will follow in the West View Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Rickie D. Trivette 
(July 13, 1958 – March 4, 2018) 

    Mr. Rickie Dee Trivette, age 59, of Sugar Grove, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Watauga Medical Center. Born July 13, 1958 in Watauga County, he was the son of Dexter and Willrea Ward Trivette. Rickie worked as an electrician for Mountaineer Electric and Harmon Electric. He enjoyed hunting, and riding four wheelers and horses. 
    He is survived by his parents, Dexter & Willrea Ward Trivette, one son, Joshua Trivette, his former wife and friend, Deborah Trivette, two sisters, Brickie Townsend and husband Bennie and Vickie Trivette, three nephews, Anthony Townsend and wife Tonya, Bradley Townsend and wife Sage and Hadley Townsend and wife Amy, three nieces, Stana Coffey, Karla Arnold and husband Van and Shannon Coffey. He is also survived by several grand nieces and nephews. Aunts Lennis Snyder and husband Allen, Orbie Ward and husband Len, Nadine Ward and Bettina Ward and a special friend Pam Harmon and a number of cousins and special friends.

Julian Ken Shull, Jr. 
(October 15, 1941 – March 5, 2018) 

    Julian Kenneth Shull, Jr. (Ken) age 76, passed away peacefully at home Monday evening, March 5, leaving this world for a much better one. He was certain of his welcome into a new life with God. He lived these last days one at a time, keeping them full of positive thoughts and happiness.
    
     Ken was born in Anniston, Alabama, to Kenneth and Ruth Cook Shull. He grew up there, graduating from Anniston High School in 1959. He studied at the University of Alabama for his B.S. degree in chemistry, then M.S. degree in biology. He earned his Ph.D. degree in genetics from Florida State University. For eleven years he taught at Loyola University in New Orleans, then at Appalachian State University in Boone in the Department of Biology until his retirement in 2007. His love for students always stimulated his love of teaching.
    
     First Baptist Church of Boone held a special place in Ken’s heart, a place of service and worship. He served in numerous leadership roles, as a deacon, a Sunday School teacher, moderator, and whenever or wherever he could be of service. He held memberships in Association of Southeastern Biologists, AAAS, Torch International, and Lily Society of America. 
    
     Survivors include his wife of 50 years Carolyn Saxon Shull, son Kenneth Shull, III, daughter Gwyn Ridenhour and husband Jamieson, grandchildren Ian and Eva Ridenhour, cousin Keith Shull and his family. The extended family includes Carolyn’s sister Jeanette Chastain, her husband John, and their family.
    
     Visitation will be Thursday, March 8th from 5 to 7pm at the First Baptist Church Sanctuary. The service will be Friday, March 9th at 2pm, also in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Memorials may be made to the budget of First Baptist Church, 375 West King Street, Boone NC 28607 or in memory of Ken’s parents who suffered from Alzheimer’s to Alzheimer’s Research Initiatives at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, PO Box 571021, Winston-Salem, NC 27157.

Brian Mickel

November 10, 1956 – March 4, 2018

Brian Mickel, age 61, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Watauga Medical Center in Boone, NC.

He was born on November 10, 1956 in Toledo, Ohio, a son of James Alexander Mickel Jr. and Jeanne Gage Mickel.

He was preceded in death by his Father, James Alexander Mickel Jr.

Brian was a member of Mountainside Lutheran Church in Linville, NC. He was a graduate of Addison High School in Addison Michigan. He enjoyed word searches, gardening, cooking and bowling. He also enjoyed country music. He worked at Albertson’s grocery store for 25+ years and he worked for Wal-Mart for 6 years.

Brian leaves behind to cherish his memory his: Mother, Jeanne Mickel of Bradenton, FL, Brother, Robert (Penny) Mickel of Albion, MI, Sister, Brenda/BJ Mickel-Close and husband Bill Close of Newland, NC, Brother, Jamie (Michelle) Mickel III of Addison, MI and several nieces and nephews: Michael, Matthew, Michelle, Cassidy, Dennis, Bobby, Alex, Jimmy, Jaide, Jordan, and Allyssa.

A Memorial Service for Brian Mickel will be held on Thursday March 15, 2018 at Linville Cove Apartments at 1:00 PM.

Geysha Lea Hopson

November 7, 1958 – March 4, 2018

Geysha Lea Hopson, age 59 of Spruce Pine, North Carolina passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Burke County Hospice in Valdese, North Carolina
She was born on November 7, 1958 in Davidson County, North Carolina, a daughter of Eldridge Hughes and Barbara Workman Hughes.
Geysha was a loving person who always put others first. 
She was preceded in death by her Father, Eldridge Hughes
Geysha leaves behind to cherish her memory her: Husband of 31 years, Randy Hopson , Daughters: Christalin ( Antonio) Godinez of Newland, NC, Jamy (Matt) Webb of Newland, NC, Alicia (Josh) Dugger of Newland, NC, Son; Randy ( Jaimie) Hopson of Newland, NC

Marian Hughes Garland

September 2, 1927 – March 6, 2018

Marian Hughes Garland, age 90 of Linville, North Carolina passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at the Watauga Medical Center in Boone, NC.
She was born on September 2, 1927 in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of Columbus and Bertha Boone Hughes
Marian was a traditional lady, who loved her family. She enjoyed working in the flower garden, watching Fox News and listening to country music. She was a member of Linville United Methodist Church. 
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her Husband: Ralph Garland, her second husband Dave Floyd, Sister Grace Daniels, Brother; Dave Hughes and Great-Grandchild: Baily Shane Garland

Interment will be in the Tanglewood Cemetery

Bryan Scott Miller

March 13, 1972 – February 28, 2018

Bryan Scott Miller, age 45, of Davis Ridge, Banner Elk, left his earthly home to take his walk with Jesus, Wednesday morning, February 28, 2018, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir.

Bryan is survived by two daughters, Ashley Kaczmarczyk of Clayton, North Carolina, and Chloe Miller of Boone; two granddaughters, Taylor and Olivia Kaczmarczyk of Clayton; two sisters, Lori Miller and husband Nathan Church, and Lynn Miller, all of Boone; one aunt, Brenda Davis of Valle Crucis; his special friends, Legina Speaks of Taylorsville, Gary and Elaine McGuire of Vilas, and David Searcy of Boone; four nephews, Peyton Church, Cody Swift, Corey Swift, and Patrick Smith, and one niece, Victoria Smith. 

He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Davis Miller; his grandparents, Hildreth and Etta Davis, and one aunt, Carolyn Triplett and his little buddy Bear.

A memorial service for Bryan Scott Miller will be held Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at 4:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel.
