Sarah “Burton” Clark Shields, (D. June 12, 2017)

Sarah “Burton” Clark Shields, of Boone, went to be with her Jesus on Monday, June 12, 2017.

Burton was educated in Scotland Neck, North Carolina schools and graduated from high school at Bob Jones University High School. She attended Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, and Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, furthering her degree in Music. Later she also got a Business degree from Hardbarger Business College in Raleigh, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Robert Shields of Boone; her daughter, Millie Shields Morris of Rocky Mount, North Carolina; a grandson, Jordan Shields Morris of Rocky Mount; her sister, Eleanor Clark Murphy; her brother, William E. Clark of Tampa, Florida, and her Mother, Mildred E. Clark of Scotland Neck.

She is survived by her sons, Robert B. Shields and his wife, Melinda of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Bradford L. Shields and his wife Kim of Boone; one son-in-law, John R. Morris of Rocky Mount; grandsons, Burton E. Morris of Raleigh, Bradford L. Shields, Jr. and his wife Dani of Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany, and Robert H. Shields of Minneapolis; granddaughters, Sarah J. Shields of Boston, Massachusetts, Jessica G. Shields of Minneapolis, Amy E. Shields of Minneapolis, and Meredith J. Shields of Boone, and one great-grandson, Jordan Daniel Shields of Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany.

Memorial service for Sarah “Burton” Clark Shields will be conducted Thursday morning, June 15, 2017, at 11:00 o’clock, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Officiating will be Reverend Greg Heisler and Reverend Bud Russell. Private graveside services will be conducted Saturday, June 17, 2017, in Scotland Neck Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday morning, from 9:30 until 11:00 o’clock, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Vernon Baptist Church Missions Fund, 3505 Bamboo Road, Boone, North Carolina, 28607.

Gladys White (June 1, 1941 – June 10, 2017) 

Miss Gladys White, 76, of Robin Lane, Boone, passed away Saturday morning, June 10th at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Born June 1, 1941 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late Robert W. and Minnie Mae Ferguson White. Gladys was a member of the Boone Mennonite Brethren Church and was a Licensed Practical Nurse. 
     
Gladys is survived by her sisters, Joyce Davis of Auburn Hills, Michigan and Lillian White of Boone. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. 

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two sons, Robert White and Russell White, three sisters, Virginia McAllister and Edith and Evelyn White; and brother, Steve White. 
    
Memorial services for Gladys White will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, June 13th at 1 o’clock at the Boone Mennonite Brethren Church. Officiating will be Pastor Mike Mathis. The family will receive friends prior to the service from noon until 1 o’clock.

Mrs. Joan K. Weaver (March 18, 1936 – June 9, 2017) 

Mrs. Joan Krider Weaver, age 81, of West Jefferson, passed away Friday, June 9, 2017 at Forsyth Medical Center. Born in Todd, NC, March 18, 1936, she was a daughter of the late Dick and Ida Wilcox Krider. She was a graduate of Beaver Creek High School. Mrs. Weaver was a very active member of West Jefferson United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, her loves were her flowers and her grandchildren. As a ministers wife, Joan served alongside her late husband and supported him in his various ministerial calls.

She is survived by one daughter, Joallen Lowder and husband Trent of West Jefferson, two sons, Matthew Weaver and wife Judy of Pawleys Island, SC and Charles Weaver of West Jefferson, two grandsons, Henry and Joseph Lowder of West Jefferson, one brother, Jasper Krider of Washington State, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Rev. A. B. Weaver and several brothers and sisters. 

A Celebration of Life service for Joan Weaver will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, June 13th at 2 oclock at the West Jefferson United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Perry Miller. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Weaver UMAR Home or to United Methodist World Hunger, in care of West Jefferson United Methodist Church, PO Box 826, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

Thomas Edwin McDonough, Jr. (April 2, 1931 – June 9, 2017)

Thomas E. McDonough, Jr. of Vilas, died June 9, 2017. Born April 2, 1931 in Richmond, Kentucky, he was the son of Thomas E. McDonough and Ophelia Jakes McDonough.

Thomas graduated from Druid Hills High School in Atlanta, GA in 1948 where he won many honors as a swimmer throughout the southeast. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout while in high school. He attended Emory University and was on the varsity swim team all four years; he also swam in the HavAtlanta games in 1948 and 1949. He was elected to the Emory E club for those earning athletic letters each year and was elected to the honorary leadership organization ODK. Thomas was also a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in 1953. He earned his Master of Arts and Sciences degree from Emory University in 1960.

In 1950 Thomas enlisted in the United States Naval Aviation service. One year after graduating from Emory University he accepted a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and spent three years on active duty.

Mr. McDonough enjoyed a career in the field of education as a teacher and administrator in Georgia and Florida. After 18 years in the field, he enrolled in Caldwell Community College and graduated with a degree in Radiological Sciences. He became Director of Allied Health Sciences at Griffin Technical Institute in Griffin, GA in 1983 and retired from the Institute as Special Assistant to the President in 1996.
    
Thomas returned to the Boone area and settled in Willow Valley in 1996. He went back to work at Mast General Store until finally retiring for good in March 2015. While in retirement Thomas shared with his wife honors as Outstanding Volunteers from the American Lung Association, The American Heart Association, the North Carolina Branch of the International Dyslexia Association and from the International Dyslexia Association where he was volunteer Branch Services Coordinator for the United States.
    
Thomas was an active member of the Church of the Holy Cross, Valle Crucis and former member of several parishes in Conyers and McDonough GA and St. Lukes, Boone, Parish of the Holy Communion, Ashe County. He served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden in six of the seven parishes of which he was a member. Tom served in several capacities on the Diocese of Western North Carolina and was selected for the Outstanding Service Award in 2014.
    
Thomas met his wife, Claire Tompkins McDonough while at Emory and they were married in 1953 upon their graduation.
    
Thomas is survived by his wife Claire; two daughters and two sons: Linda Ree McDonough, of Chapel Hill, NC., Scott Edwin McDonough of Boone, Randall Blaine McDonough and wife Andrea of Boone, NC., and Leslie Claire McDonough Sharpe and husband Scott of Cary, NC.; grandchildren Brett McDonough and wife Meredith of Greensboro, NC., Lindsay Williams of Cary NC., Thomas McDonough and wife Allison of Boone, NC., Molly Stein-Seroussi and husband Garrett of Hillsborough, NC, Josh Sharpe of Asheville, NC, and Brianna McDonough of Chapel Hill, NC. He is also survived by his brother Robert Jakes McDonough and wife Lisa of Decatur, Georgia.
    
Memorial services for Tom will be held at Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Valle Crucis on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 11:00 AM.

Mr. Robert C. Peay, Jr. (July 21, 1946 – June 9, 2017)

Mr. Robert Craven “Bob” Peay, Jr., age 70 of Boone, passed away Friday afternoon, June 9, 2017 at the Veteran’s Hospital in Asheville. Born July 21, 1946 in Rockingham County, he was a son of the late Robert Craven Peay Sr., and Mary Tuttle Peay.

Bob was a US Air Force Veteran, having served during Vietnam. While living in Madison, NC, Bob was a member of the Lions Club, the Jaycees, and was a charter member of the Intelligence Ruritan Club. He was also a member of the Boone Optimist Club, the Cove Creek Ruritan Club and the First Baptist Church. Bob was retired from Farm Bureau Insurance where he worked first as a salesman and later was the agency manager.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Albert Peay, four children; Caroline Peay Holland and husband Thomas J. “T.J.” and their children Andrew Holland and Emma Kate Harrison, Robert Craven Peay, III and wife Jennifer and their children, Lydia Peay and Bryson Peay, William Bradley Everette and wife Kim and their daughter, Lily Everette and James Brian Everette and his daughter Pattie Everette, one sister, Kathy Peay Amos and husband Ronnie. The family would like to thank Penny Mahala who was Bob’s friend and caregiver.

Memorial services for Mr. Robert Craven “Bob” Peay, Jr., will be conducted Sunday, June 25, 2017 at 1 PM at the First Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Roy Dobyns and Rev. Harold Bennett. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Home of NC, Optimist Cottage, PO Box 127, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450.

Phillip Dale Carpenter (Nov. 20, 1982 – June 8, 2017)

Phillip Dale Carpenter, age 34, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Johnson City Medical Center, the results of a four wheeler accident..

He was born on November 20, 1982 in Watauga County, North Carolina, a son of Ruth Crump Carpenter and the late William Cecil Carpenter 

He enjoyed being in the outdoors and running heavy equipment for construction. Phillip also enjoyed working on cars and other automotive equipment.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Chris Carpenter. 

He is survived by his mother, Ruth Carpenter of Newland; brothers, Steve Carpenter, and his wife, Debbie of Newland, Norman Carpenter of Newland, Sherman Carpenter of Newland, Richard Carpenter, and his wife, Teresa of Newland; sisters, Betty Ann Boyd, and her husband, Mike, of Morganton, Brenda Williamson, of Morganton, Lola Carpenter of Newland, Cindy Thomas, and her husband, Steve, of Newland;

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 12, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. from the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:00 noon at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Daniels Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home to help cover funeral expenses for the Carpenter Family.

Mr. Ralph Davis (June 10, 1946 – June 7, 2017)

Charles “Ralph” Davis, age 70, of Mountain Dale Rd., Vilas, passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at Watauga Medical Center.

Born June 10, 1946, he was a son of Hugh and Elizabeth Phillips Davis. Mr. Davis retired from Lowe’s Home Improvement after 28 years of service and spent the last 21 years in the rental property business with his wife, Nancy. Ralph was a long-time faithful member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a loving husband and daddy, friend, neighbor and helper to all.

Ralph is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nancy Mixon Davis; daughters, Jan Davis Scott and husband, David, of Vilas and LeAnne Davis Reese and husband Jeff, and grandson, Jacob Davis Reese, all of Purlear; and brother, Larry Davis and wife, Olevia, of Vilas. Also surviving is an aunt, Betty Stout of Vilas; brothers, and sisters-in-law, Clark and Nancy Mixon of Mountain City, TN and Jim and Dannette Mixon of Vilas; nephews, Garrett Mixon and wife, Meghan and their two children, all of Zionville, and Justin and Nathan Mixon of Fuquay-Varina; and a number of cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six siblings, Martha, Carl, Joe Lee, Mary Ellen and infants, Lane and Blaine; and nephews, Mark and Jamie Pennell.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, June 11th, at 2 PM at Beaver Dam Baptist Church of Vilas, officiated by Rev. Keith Brown and Rev. Michael Greene. Burial will follow in the upper Beaver Dam Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 until 8 PM at Austin & Barnes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Beaver Dam Baptist Church Fellowship Hall Building Fund (a project very special to Ralph) in care of David Scott, 3476 Mountain Dale Rd., Vilas, NC 28692.

The family wishes to thank the Beaver Dam First Responders, Watauga Ambulance Service, The Foley Center, Seby B. Jones Cancer Center and especially the wonderful service and care of Watauga Medical Center during Ralph’s illness.
