Kevin McGee (April 27, 1960 – July 5, 2017)

Kevin McGee, 57, of Roan Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at The Waters of Roan Highlands.

He was born on April 27, 1960 in Avery County NC, a son of the late Frank and Jean Shook McGee. .

He was preceded in death by his parents

Kevin attended Lewis Chapel on Big Horse Creek. He enjoyed watching basketball and baseball. 

Kevin leaves behind to cherish his memory his: Uncle John Shook form Atlanta, GA, his Aunt Jean Benfield from Longview, WA.
Several cousins.
Graveside services for Kevin McGee will be held on Friday July 7, 2017 at 11:00 in the Minneapolis Cemetery, with Rev.John McCoury Officiating.

Mary Spelman Vincent (Aug. 7, 1924 – July 4, 2017)

Mary S Vincent, 92, of Punta Gorda, Florida and Frisco, Texas passed away on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at her summer home in Sugar Mountain, North Carolina.

She was born on Aug. 7, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York, a daughter of the late Henry Beale Spelman and the late Mary Noyes Spelman.

Mary leaves behind her children; Son, Bruce (Jackie) Smith of Frisco, TX, Son, Henry Smith, Son, Chris Smith, Daughter, Marianna Matzenik.

Services for Mary Vincent will be held at a later date in Florida.

Peggy Neese Carlson (Nov. 21, 1944 – July 3, 2017)

Peggy Neese Carlson, of Blowing Rock, went to be with her Lord on July 3, 2017.

Peggy was born in Columbus, GA, attended public schools in Columbus and graduated from high school at Columbus High School She attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL and earned a BS degree in Art. Later she returned to Florida State University and earned a MS in Interior Design. After a brief stint with an architectural and engineering firm Peggy formed her own business. She owned and operated The Interior Design Centre, Inc. for over thirty-five years.

She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Van Neese, Jr. of Columbus, GA, and her mother Clara Rockett Smith, of Gainesville, GA.

She is survived by her husband John D. Carlson, Blowing Rock, NC; her sons J. D. Carlson and his wife Paula of Bloomfield Hills, MI and Justin Paul Carlson and his wife Sandy of Charlotte, NC; grandson Nathaniel E. Carlson, granddaughters Anna B. Carlson and Olivia Clare Carlson of Bloomfield Hills, MI; her brother Paul Van Neese, Ill and his wife Patti, of Gainesville, GA; nephew Paul V. Neese, IV and niece Helen N. Neese, of Gainesville, GA.

Peggy had many interests in life, returning to painting after her retirement from interior design. She loved to read and was a member of several book clubs in Blowing Rock. She loved to travel, play bridge, play mahjong and entertain friends and family. Her many interests included geneology and she was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. She was also a member of the Blowing Rock Country Club.

A memorial service for Peggy Neese Carlson will be conducted Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 2:00 O’clock at St. Mary of the Hill Episcopal Church in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Reverend Richard Lawler and Reverend Sam Tallman will officiate. Private services will be conducted in Mary’s Garden, St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church.

The family will receive friends in a celebration of life in the parish hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Clara Neese Smith Endowment, St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church, PO Box 14, Blowing Rock, NC 28605. Peggy and her brother Van established the endowment to benefit children of the high country.

Roger Lee Harwood (Feb. 27, 1943 – July 3, 2017)

Roger Lee Harwood, 74 of 170 Ferncliffe Road, Boone, passed away, Monday, July 3, 2017 at Watauga Medical Center.  

Mr. Harwood was a native of Albemarle, North Carolina moving to Boone in 1961 where he taught school at Watauga County High School. He was a member of Deerfield United Methodist Church.

Mr. Harwood is survived by his wife, Linda Faye Morris Harwood of Boone, two sons, Lynn Harwood and wife Yvette of Greensboro and Derek Harwood and wife Doreen Wofford of Raleigh, five grandchildren, Spencer, Trevor, Lauren and Alex Harwood and Ashton Wofford.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother Wilburn Lee Harwood and Ora Lee Whitley Harwood, three sisters, Alene Tomberlin, Ruby Hewett and Shirley Stancil.

Funeral services for Mr. Roger Lee Harwood will be conducted, Thursday, July 6, 2017, at 2:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Wes Austin and Reverend Jim McKinney will officiate. The body will lie in state at the chapel from 12:00 until 2:00 o’clock. 

The family will receive friends Thursday from 12:00 until 2:00 at the chapel prior to the service.

Martha Walls Miller (Jan. 21, 1934 – June 28, 2017)

Martha Walls Miller, 83, of 285 Walls Road, Vilas, passed away Wednesday morning, June 28, 2017, at her home.

Martha was born Jan. 21, 1934 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Henry Clay Walls and Ruth Elizabeth Beach Walls. She was a retired home assistant for Project on Aging, and attended Westside Baptist Church.

Martha is survived by two daughters, Tammy Miller and husband David of Vilas, and Lynnette Reece and Kevin McLelland of Deep Gap; one son, Randall Reece of the Silverstone Community; two brothers, Richard Walls and wife Pat of Vilas, and Cecil Walls and wife Reva of Lynchburg, Virginia, and two sisters, Betty Miller and Helen Hicks and husband Jim, all of Vilas. She is also survived by five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Kermit Miller; one daughter, Kim Brown, and three brothers, Bobby, Alfred, and Max Walls.

Funeral services for Martha Walls Miller will be conducted Sunday afternoon, July 2, 2017, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor David Ward and Pastor Gurney Robbins. Burial will follow in the Rhymer Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times friends may call at the home of Bettye Miller, 112 Walls Road #5, Vilas, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westside Baptist Church, PO Box 142, Sugar Grove, North Carolina, 28679.
