Pansy Fox Aldridge 
(June 22, 1930 – December 24, 2017) 

   Pansy Viola Fox Aldridge, age 87 of Highway 105 South, Banner Elk, passed away Sunday morning, December 24, 2017, at her home. Born June 22, 1930 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Robe Adam and Ovela Barlow Fox. Her family was the love of her life. She enjoyed her flower gardens, travel, and Elvis. Pansy was Elvis Presleys #1 fan. 
    Mrs. Aldridge is survived by three sons, Billy Joe Bumgarner and wife, Marie, of Vilas, Frank Bumgarner and wife, Mary Jo, of Foscoe, and Boyce Bumgarner and wife, Loretta, of Abington, VA; brothers, Wade Fox and wife Emmy, of Marion and James Fox of Foscoe; sisters, Sue Gragg and husband, Dayton, of Blowing Rock and Rosemary Stamey and husband, Raymond, of Jonas Ridge; seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special grand-daughter and caregiver, Stephanie; and special aunt, Mary Styles. 
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Melinda Byers; brothers, Denver and Gary Fox; sister and brother-in-law, Alvarita and Reed Barrier; and an infant grandson. 
    Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon, December 29th at 12:30 at Grace Baptist Church in Foscoe, officiated by Rev. Burl Greer, Rev. Bill Miller and Rev. Len Aldridge. The family will receive friends Friday from 11 until 12:30, prior to services, at the church. Burial will follow in the Jestes Cemetery. Mr. Stephen L. Farthing 
(January 01, 1973 – January 2, 2018) 

    Mr. Stephen Lyle Farthing, age 45, of Banner Elk, died Tuesday, January 2, 2018 a Johnson City Medical Center. Born January 1, 1973 in Watauga County, he was a son of the late Richard and Jeanette Watson Farthing. Stephen worked as a painter.
    He is survived by one brother, Rodney Farthing and wife Julie of Banner Elk, his fiancé Cindy Price of Zionville, his nieces and nephews, Rachel, Jessie Brandon and Kaity, and a number of Aunts, Uncles and cousins.
    Family and close friends will gather for a memorial service on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 2 oclock at High County United Church of Christ. Mr. Harold Thomas Hayes 
(April 24, 1943 – January 3, 2018) 

    To be absent from this world is to be present with the Lord. Harold Thomas Hayes, age 74 of Vanderpool Road, Vilas, NC, made this journey on January 3, 2018. 
    
    Harold was the son of James Alfonso and Anna Colvard Hayes, who preceded him in death. Harold is survived by his wife of 52 years, Alta Townsend Hayes; two brothers: James Kenneth Hayes and wife Beulah, of Vilas, and Billy Jack Hayes and wife Carrie, of Monroe, NC; and by one sister: Elizabeth Kanupp of Galion, Ohio. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Teresa Townsend Austin and several nieces and nephews, extended family, Wafa Bekhti and Sarah Boujelal. Harold was also preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Robert (Bob) and Virginia Townsend. Two sisters: Anna Summit and Mary Fletcher and brother-in-law Gale Townsend.
    
    Harold was a graduate of Appalachian State University with a Masters Degree in Business. Harold was with the Federal Land Bank for several years before moving to Florida. In Florida he was with several commercial banks as a loan officer and the United Methodist Center of Tampa as a Re-development Officer, working with low to moderate income individuals to obtain homes. He was the recipient of the Hope Award for work done in the Tampa Bay area to obtain housing, education and meals for the homeless. Harold earned several other awards during his career. In 1995 Harold became disabled and was not able to do the things that he loved. Harold was a devout Christian talking to everyone he met about his Lord and Savior. He was instrumental in leading several of his family members to Christ along with the members of the youth group he led.
    
    Harold served in the US Army with the 101st Airborne Division and was a member of American Legion Post 130. Harold was proud of his years of service and the Country that he served. While in the Army he was awarded A Letter of Commendation for his superior performance. 
    
    Harold loved to watch the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers play football, he was always looking for unusual things to purchase, and he will be missed by his family, friends and fur babies, Sissy and Murphy.
    
    The family of Harold Thomas Hayes will receive friends at the home, 367 Vanderpool Road, Vilas, NC on Saturday, January 6, 2018 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. 
    Military graveside services provided by the American Legion Post #130 will be private.

James E. Baker 
(November 29, 1952 – January 4, 2018) 

    James Edward Baker, 65, of Asheville, passed away on Thursday, January 4, 2018, at his residence.
    A native of Boone, NC, James was the son of the late George Edward and Virginia Denny Baker.
    A retired Sergeant with North Carolina State Highway Patrol with 30 years of service, Mr. Baker is a member of a proud law enforcement family along with his father and sons. He was also a member of the North Carolina Troopers Association and the Snow Lodge #363 A.F. & A.M in Boone. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing and visiting the Outer Banks each summer with his family.
    Mr. Baker is survived by his wife, Sheree Kuykendall Baker; sons, Robby Baker and wife Brook, and Bradley Baker and wife Caroline; sister, Vivian Baker Richards; and many other family members and friends.
    The funeral service for Mr. Baker will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave. Interment with Masonic Rites will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
    His family will receive friends, with the North Carolina Highway Patrol Honor Guard standing guard, for two hours prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Stanley D. Storie 
(November 08, 1923 – January 5, 2018) 

    Mr. Stanley Dow Storie, 94, of Boone, N.C., passed away Friday afternoon, January 5, 2018 at the Mountain Home VA Medical Center. He has gone to be with his wife, Mina Jo, who passed away at age 83, September 19, 2009.
    Mr. Storie was a World War II veteran, that served in the US Navy Seabees in the 1st Special BN Stevedores.
    He was a local builder, constructing and working on many homes in the area.
    His immediate family survivors are four sons, Stanley Jr., Terry, Scott and Toby. Two daughters, Julie and Renee. Two grandsons, Joseph and Derrick. Two granddaughters, Molli and Maddi and one great grandson, Kyle.
    Funeral services for Stanley Dow Storie will be conducted Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Bud Russell will officiate. Burial with military honors provided by the US Navy and American Legion Post 130 will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday prior to the services.

Kim Willard Shenton 
(June 12, 1957 – January 5, 2018) 

    Kim Willard Shenton, age 60, of Water Tank Road, Fleetwood, and formerly of Salisbury, Md, passed away Friday, January 5, 2018. Born June 12, 1957 in West Chester, PA, she was a daughter of Roland and Dorothy (Dottie) Ehrisman Willard. 
    Kim and Mike owned and operated M & K Timberworks. She enjoyed working out at the gym and hiking in the mountains with her husband. 
    
    Mrs. Shenton is survived by her husband, Mike; daughter, Brynn Walker and husband, Scott, of Leicester, NC; step-daughter, Tina Somers and husband, Pal, of Crisfield, Md; step-son, Zachary Shenton and wife, Karen, of Stockton, Md; four grandchildren; and sister, Karin Smiley of West Chester, PA
    
    Memorial services for Kim Willard Shenton will be conducted at a later date.

Mrs. Carolyn Y. Whisenant 
(February 14, 1931 – January 6, 2018) 

    Carolyn Yount Whisenant, 86, of Clover, SC went to her heavenly home on Saturday, January 6, 2018.
    
    Mrs. Whisenant was born February 14, 1931 in Lincolnton, NC to the late Ernest and Sally Seagle Yount. She had one sister, Joan, whom she is dancing with in heaven. She was married to her high school sweetheart, Avery Deal (A.D.) Whisenant of Clover, SC for 66 years. Together, they had Dale Steven Whisenant (Mary) of Boone, NC and Barry Martin Whisenant of Tega Cay, SC. She is also survived by brothers in law Richard (Dick) Whisenant of Clover, SC and Jerry Hoffman of Charlotte, NC. Nieces include Jackie Wallace, Brenda Glenn (Tom Ed), Debbie Smith (Billy) and Zoe Hoffman. Nephews include Michael Whisenant (Joy), Darrell Whisenant (Tammy), Max Whisenant (Kristy), and Eric Hoffman (Dawn), and great nieces, nephews, her pastor, Charles Aurand and many dear friends. 
    
    To have known Carolyn was to know a gracious, kind, and beautiful woman, inside and out. She was a true Southern Lady. She was a devout Lutheran her whole life and served on Circles and on the Lutheran Womens Conference. 
    
    Carolyn and A.D. were summer residents of Boone, NC for many years. They loved their special mountain home Doe Ridge. Nothing made her happier than the hours she spent in her gardens.
    
    Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 10, 2017 at the M.L. Ford and Sons Funeral Home Chapel, 209 N. Main Street, Clover with the Rev. Dr. J. George (Gil) Gilbert, STS officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 12:30 to 2:00 pm at the funeral home.

Mr. Ben J. Logan 
(January 01, 1999 – January 7, 2018) 
   

    Ben Jerome Logan, aged 75, died Sunday, January 7, 2018 at Watauga Medical Center. He passed away because of a blood clot to the lung. 
    
     He is survived by his wife, Katherine and their two sons, Mark, aged 32, and Kevin, aged 24, both living in Charlotte, NC. Ben’s eldest son, Michael, lives near Buffalo, NY with his wife Diane, and Ben’s daughter, Linda, lives near Rochester, NY with her husband Ron. Linda and Ron’s children are Ben’s three grandchildren: Mary, aged 17, and Joseph and John, twins aged 12. Ben was predeceased by his brother, Jim, and an infant son, Scott Christopher.
    
    Ben was born and raised in Buffalo, NY, to Mary and Ben Kwitowski. He got his first paper route at age 8. He graduated with an engineering degree in Electrical from Erie County Technical Institute. He worked at Bell Aerospace Systems as an engineer, and served in the US Army.
    
    In 1984, Ben and Katherine moved to Boone, NC, where he continued his business, Logan Heating and Cooling, serving the High Country for almost 35 years. In addition to heating and air conditioning work, Ben was also a licensed electrician and plumber, and particularly enjoyed kitchen and bath remodeling. He built the house the family currently lives in (on Daniel Boone Ext) and several spec houses that were sold to members of the community.
    
    Ben loved children, both his own and friends’. He was an avid SCUBA diver, and he and Katherine went on many dive trips together. On vacation, he could always be found in or near the water. 
    
    He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Boone, serving as a Deacon and on a number of committees. He was a Christian role model for his family.
    
    Ben remodeled cars, and some of his prized possessions were a Datsun 240z and a showroom perfect 1973 Triumph Stag (with hard and soft convertible covers). 
    
    He was a lover of all music – his favorite bands were Led Zeppelin and Imagine Dragons — and in the last three years he saw live some of the biggest acts in rock n’ roll, including The Rolling Stones, Madonna, The Who, Neil Young, Paul McCartney, Roger Waters, Imagine Dragons, and The Goo Goo Dolls (his nephew is the bass guitarist).
    
    Some of his fondest memories were taking a road trip to the Grand Canyon with Katherine, watching Mark and Kevin perform in theatre productions, teaching his grandchildren to ride bikes, and completing a remodeling project with his son Michael. 
    
    Despite his health issues in the last 5 years, he has been in good spirits, and continues to inspire those who witness his dedication and resilience. 
    
    Although many members of the community knew him by his service sticker on their water heater or furnace, he will be more appropriately remembered for his fierce love as a husband, father, mentor, and friend. He cared for those less fortunate, and always lifted others through encouragement and laughter.
    
    Ben’s memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Boone. A reception will follow at the church. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Hospitality House in Boone or Boy Scout Troop #109 in Boone.

Moises Ventura Sargento

February 29, 1980 – January 02, 2018

Moises Ventura Sargento, age 37, of Dobbins Road, Banner Elk, passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Moises was born February 29, 1080 in Nueva Libertad, Ell Provenir, Chiapas, Mexico, son of Marcela Sargento Roblero and Raul Ventura Hernandez. He was the owner and operator of Ventura Painting Company in Avery County.

Moises is survived by his son, Christopher Allen Ventura, and one daughter, Jada Allen Ventura, both of Banner Elk; Marcela Sargento Roblero of Motozintla, Chiapas; his father, Raul Ventura Hernandez of Comalapa, Chiapas, and four sisters, Elda Emilia Ventura Sargento, Magaly Ventura Sargento, Vribelda Ventura Sargento, and Blancaneri Ventura Sargento, all of Motozintla, Chiapas.

Funeral services for Moises Ventura Sargento will be conducted Saturday afternoon, January 6, 2018, at 2:00 o’clock, at Calvary Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Burial will take place in Mexico.

The family will receive friends following the funeral service.

Joe Phelps

February 27, 1944 – January 06, 2018

Mr. Joe Phelps, 73, of Vilas, NC, passed away on January 6, 2018 at The Foley Center in Blowing Rock. Born in Camden, Arkansas on February 27, 1944, he was the son of the late William Joseph Phelps and the late Virginia Sue Johnson Phelps. 

Mr. Phelps earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond. He also studied at the University of North Texas, Denton; the University of Miami, Florida; and the University of Oklahoma, Norman.

Phelps studies with William Adam at Indiana University for his undergraduate work and on a continuing basis for more than thirty years. His other influential teachers were David Ritter (University of Central Arkansas), John Haynie (University of North Texas), Fred Peterson (Eastern Kentucky) and Gil Johnson (University of Miami).

While teaching band in the public schools of Arkansas and Indiana, Phelps played with the Fort Smith Symphony, the South Bend Symphony, and the Elkhart Symphony. He also soloed with the University of Notre Dame Concert Band. He was a member of the South Bend Symphony Brass Quintet and was an orchestra member of the Domaine School for Orchestral Conductors and Players, the Western Piedmont Symphony, and the North Carolina Symphony during their summer residencies in Boone.

He became Professor of Trumpet and Assistant Director of Bands at Appalachian State in 1971 and enjoyed a full-time career of 30 years supplemented with part-time teaching through the Fall of 2017. For the first 16 years, he was the director of the Symphonic Band and the Marching Mountaineers. During that time period, the marching band grew from 80 to more than 220 members and became known as “North Carolina’s Band of Distinction.” Phelps started and directed the Trumpet Choir. In addition, he played in faculty brass ensembles and was a soloist with the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra and the University Wind Ensemble, along with many guest appearances with high school bands throughout the state. Phelps was a member of the International Trumpet Guild.

Phelps has had articles and reviews published in The North Carolina Music Educator, the Band Directors’ Guide, and the International Trumpet Guild Journal. His book, So You Want to be a Trumpet Player, was published in 2002.

Among the awards and honors Phelps received were Appalachian’s Chancellor’s Award of Merit, the Distinguished Service Award from the Appalachian Alumni Association, and the Outstanding Teacher Award in the Hayes School of Music in 2001. In November of 2017, Phelps was elected to the North Carolina Bandmasters Association “Hall of Fame.” 

Phelps was preceded in death by his wife Anne Dodd Phelps, brother William Johnson Phelps, and step-son Jay Dellinger. Surviving are Sister-In-Law Phyllis Phelps, nephews Michael and Joey Phelps, all of Little Rock, Arkansas, and step-son Craig Dellinger, niece, Ariel Dellinger, both of Kernersville, NC.

Plans for a future Celebration of Life for Joe Phelps are forthcoming and will be announced through the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University.

James H. Dunn

November 19, 1955 – January 06, 2018

James H. “Sandy” Dunn, age 62, of Boone, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Watauga Medical Center. James worked as an Auto Salesman until his retirement. 

James is survived by his wife, Nikki Dunn, one son, James Harry Dunn, III of Florida; one granddaughter and one grandson, Mallory Dunn of California and Damien Dunn; two sisters, Susan M. Dunn of Boone, and Shonna K. Dunn of San Bernardino, CA. and two grandchildren also survive. 

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, James Harry Dunn, Jr and Louise Sherrill Dunn and sister, Sherrill L. Dunn.

Barbara Figley Shupe

July 22, 1933 – January 07, 2018

Barbara Figley Shupe, age 84, of LaBelle, Florida, passed away Sunday morning, January 7, 2018, at Watauga Medical Center.

Barbara was born July 22, 1933 in Huntington, West Virginia, daughter of the late Frank Z. Figley and Lorraine Harlan Figley. She was a retired Elementary School Music Teacher.

Barbara is survived by three sons, Marshall F. Shupe of Lake Worth, Florida, Christopher H. Shupe and wife Valerie of LaBelle, Florida, and Justin C. Shupe of Davenport, Florida; three granddaughters, Ansley Cockram and husband Willie of Labelle, Florida, Abbey Shupe of Fort Myers, Florida, and Breanna Shupe of Davenport, Florida, and one grandson, Colby Shupe of Davenport, Florida.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Henry Wren Shupe, Jr., and one granddaughter, Aimee Shupe Wingate.

A memorial service for Barbara Figley Shupe will be conducted at a later date in Clewiston, Florida.

Margaret Eleanor Evaul
March 2, 1919 – January 3, 2018

Margaret Eleanor Evaul, age 98 of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville, NC.
She was born on March 2, 1919 in Christian County, Kentucky, a daughter of William Buck Cloud and Mary Medearis Cloud.
Margaret was a member of Frank Presbyterian Church, PCA. She enjoyed working as a volunteer at the hospital and Ram’s Rack.
She and her husband worked as missionaries in Latin America for 14 years and helped establish the Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Crossnore, NC. Margaret served as a substitute teacher in Avery county schools and worked as a bookkeeper for BJ’s in Banner Elk for many years.
She will be greatly missed by her family and the community. 
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her Husband, Philip Oscar Evaul; Son, William Kerr Evaul; Grandchild, Zachary Lange.
Margaret leaves behind to cherish her memory her: Daughters, Phyllis (Stanley) Mills of Crossnore, NC, Rebecca (John) Crenshaw of Linville Falls, NC, Sons. November 15, 1939 – January 3, 2018

Rabon Linney Braswell , 78 , of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk 
He was born on November 15, 1939 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of Hugh MCDonald Braswell and Ella Haga Braswell.
Rabon was a member of Sugar Mountain Baptist Church, he enjoyed woodworking and playing the mandoline.

Services for Rabon Linney Braswell will be held on Friday, January 5, 2018 beginning at 7:00PM from the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral. 
With Pastor Rick Hines officiating. 
The family will receive friends beginning at 5:00PM prior to the service. 
Interment will be in the Hicks Cemetery on Roaring Creek, Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 11:00AM
