Robert “Bob” Pickett

September 1, 1927 – January 10, 2018

Robert “Bob” Pickett passed away this week at the age of 90. He was born in Cleveland,Ohio in 1927. He went to Ohio State University and then graduated from John Carroll University School of Pharmacy. So that is his bio, this is his life: Newly out of college he was working in his first drugstore when he was snowed in for 3 days. He decided at that point he was done with Ohio weather, jumped on a plane to Miami, rented a car and drove up the coast of South Florida, knocking on doors of every pharmacy he saw.(1954). Got hired in a small store in downtown Lake Worth. Went home, pack up his stuff and his pregnant wife Helen and moved to Florida. Your children, Scott, Wendy and Eve thank you. Within ten years he started his own chain of drugstores called Best Buy Drugs. He ended owning 12 stores and a gift shop. One day he realized how much time it was taking traveling back and forth by car inorder to check on the stores so he decided to take flying lesson so that he could save time. He was in WW11 and was being trained as a navy pilot, but thankfully the war ended before he graduated from pilot school. He flew airplanes and raced sailboats with his best friend Dr Robert Greer, but that is not the complete man. He was a major volunteer in the community. When he was the president of the Jaycees, he was in charge of launching the fireworks on the 4 of July off a barge in the inter-coastal waterway near Peanut Island. What most people do not know is that he stored the fireworks in our carport prior to the event.(Yes we all survived). Then he went on to work (Volunteer ) for Goodwill industries. His dedication was so acknowledged by Goodwill Industries that they named a building after him on 45th St, WPB. Final conclusion: Thank you Bob Pickett , for your service to the community, for the friends you helped along the way and for being our father. You will be greatly missed. A Memorial celebration of his life will be at his daughter Wendy’s place, Friday Jan 19 starting at 4 pm to we all decide to leave. Address is 730 N L Street, Lake Worth, FL.
