Connie Webb (Nov. 24, 1940 – Jan. 4, 2016)
Connie Caraway Webb, 75, of Newland passed away on Jan. 4, 2016 at Roan Highlands Nursing Center.
A native of Avery County, she was born Nov. 24, 1940 a daughter of the late Norman and Emma Winters Caraway.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family, crafts, playing the piano and crocheting.
Connie was a member of Belview Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star Mistress of the Mountains.
Along with her parents, Connie was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Webb.
Connie has left to cherish her memory her: daughter, Gemma Mottern and husband Nathan of Newland; son, Bruce Webb and wife Chasity of Newland; grandchildren, Jonathan and wife Becky, Grant and Maelena; sister, Janice Livingston of Johnson City, TN.; brothers, Ben Caraway of Newland, Kenny Caraway and wife Vickie of Newland; great grandson, Lane Beck; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Connie Webb will be conducted on Wednesday, January 6, 2015 at 7:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. Gary Greene officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. prior to the services. Family, friends and pallbearers will meet on Thursday, January 7th at 11:00 a.m. at the Granny Caraway Cemetery in Elk Park for interment services.

Therese Tardif, 84, of Woods Road, Boone, passed away Monday morning, Jan. 4, 2016, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.
Mrs. Tardif is survived by her husband, Rock Tardiff of the home; one son, Benoit Tadiff of Cape Coral, Florida; one daughter, Odette Penske of Boone; one grandson, Nicholas Tardiff, and one granddaughter, Kaitlin Tardiff. She also survived by two brothers and five sisters. A memorial service for Therese Tardif will be conducted at a later date. Sarah K. Melton (Sept. 9, 1944 – Jan. 3, 2016)
Sarah Kathryn Kitty Jackson Melton, 71, of Boone, passed away Sunday morning, January 3, 2016. She was a native of Robeson County and the daughter of the late Rowland and Lula Belch Jackson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Ray Sonny Melton, two brothers, Eugene and Joe Jackson, and two sisters, Lois Dennis and Kay Lamb.
She is survived by her son, Terry and his wife Kelly Melton of Valle Crucis. Daughters, Teresa and her husband David Severn of OFallon, Ill., and Melinda and husband Ben Reeves of Boone.
Three granddaughters, Jaclyn and husband Craig Hampton of St. Charles, MO., Alicia and husband Cody Hanna of WI., and Renee and husband Jerome Smith of Richmond, Va. Four grandsons, 1st. Lt. Curtis Glass, U.S.A., and D.J. Severn both of of OFallon, Ill., and Thomas Ray and Joseph Isaiah Reeves of Boone.
One brother, James and wife Janet Jackson of Virginia.
Seven great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 2 p.m. in Willowdale Baptist Church, Vilas. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Cemetery, Boone. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 12-2 p.m. in the church prior to the funeral services.

Thomas Bernard South, 74, of Newland passed away on January 3, 2016 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.
A native of Avery County, he was born June 18, 1941 a son of the late Blaine and Myrtle Guy South.
He was a farmer and enjoyed sitting and talking to people.
Along with his parents, Thomas was preceded in death by his: sisters, Lillie Mae Cater, Geneva South, Claire Stines, Rosa Lee South; brother, Blaine South, Jr.
Thomas has left to cherish his memory his: brothers, Clint South of Elk Park and Ralph South of Roan Mountain, TN.; a host of nieces and nephews.

Iva Lee Hayes (Dec. 5, 1926 – Jan. 3, 2016)
Iva Lee Hayes, 89, of Jack Hayes Road, Boone, passed away Sunday afternoon, Jan. 3, 2016 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after complications from recent struggles with pneumonia.
Born December 5, 1926 in Watauga County, Iva Lee was a daughter of Thomas and Carrie Winebarger Jones. Her great joys were her family, her flowers and gardens and any kind of food preservation, her many wonderful friends, and the Farmers Market. Iva Lee was one of the organizers and a charter member of the Watauga County Farmers Market and enjoyed selling her beautiful flowers, canned goods and crafts. Her famous pumpkin cakes and homemade kraut were especially enjoyed by her many loyal customers and were shipped to their friends all over the world. Talking with customers was a special treat for her.
Due to Iva Lees and husband, Lees declining health, she had to stop working at the Market in 2010 when she was well into her 80s. That was a really sad thing for her, but she enjoyed getting numerous calls from customers begging her to please make one more run of kraut for me.
Mrs. Hayes is survived by her children; son, Joseph Edward Hayes and wife, Jerry Sue, of Boone; daughters, Judy Greene and husband, Dean, of Deep Gap and Evelyn (Sissy) Moore and husband, George Marshall, of Boone; five grandchildren, Chris Hayes, Brandy Eldreth, Ronald Moore, Melissa Cook, and Nicole James; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mabel Brown of Warrenton, VA and Brenda Gragg and husband, Johnny, of Boone; one brother, Clyde Jones and wife, Nancy, of Boone; and two sisters-in-law, Marie Jones and Georgia Jones, both of Boone. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
She was the wife of the late Edward Lee Hayes and was preceded in death by her parents: two sisters, Stella Jones and JoAnn Moretz; five brothers: Lester Jones, Chester Jones, Kenneth Jones, Bobby Jones, and an infant brother.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 7, at 2:30 p.m. at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Burl Greer and Rev. Delmar James. Stanley Hollifield (Feb. 2, 1955 – Jan. 2, 2016)
Stanley Hollifield, Jr., age 60, of passed away on January 2, 2016 at Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Avery County, he was born February 2, 1955 a son of the late Earl Stanley and Olene Burleson Holifield.
He was a Christmas Tree grower and Farmer.
Stanly enjoyed volleyball, throwing baseball, was an avid NC State fan and looked forward to his coffee dates with “The Knights”.
He was a member of Newland First Baptist where he served as Deacon and was a former Newland Alderman.
Along with his parents, Stanley was preceded in death by his sister, Vanessa Hollifield.
A good man who enjoyed life and doing for others, Stan has left to cherish his memory his: sisters, Phyllis Hollifield of Newland, Dale Hollifield of Stoney Creek, TN.; brother, Terry Hollifield of Newland; nieces, Mary Gail Hollifield of Stoney Creek, TN., Brandy Calloway of Newland; nephews, Ricky Thompson of Newland, Earl Hollifield of Newland; ; great nephew, Kori Lawson; great nieces, Tyrah Calloway and Vanessa Calloway both of Newland.

Lucy May Caudill Sudduth Rule (July 2, 1937 - Jan. 2, 2016)
Mrs. Lucy May Caudill Sudduth Rule, 78, of Foster Circle, Boone, passed away Saturday morning, Jan. 2, 2016 at Watauga Medical Center.
Mrs. Rule was born July 2, 1937 in Lucasville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Arthur Harold Caudill and Ruby McKnight Caudill. She was a retired teacher at Greenway Baptist Child Development Center, and was a member of Greenway Baptist Church.
Mrs. Rule is survived by her husband, Gordon Rule, Colonel USMC (Retired) of the home; two daughters, Sherri Stout of Boone, and Sue McGuire and husband Mark of Sugar Grove; four sons, Bob Sudduth and wife Kathy of Granite Falls, Randy Rule and wife Teresa of Norman, Oklahoma, Rick Rule and wife Debbie of Plano, Texas, and Todd Rule of Mesa, Arizona; seventeen grandchildren, including grandsons Andrew Adams, Michael Stout, Joseph Stout and Josh Taylor and granddaughters Sarah McGuire, Jessie Reece, Jennifer Taylor and Jillian Kornhouser; and eleven great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Sudduth, Major USMC (Retired); her father and mother, Arthur Harold Caudill and Ruby McKnight Caudill, and five brothers.
Funeral services for Lucy May Caudill Sudduth Rule will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, January 5, 2016 at 3:00 o’clock at Greenway Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:30 until 3:00. Officiating will be Reverend Darrell Hobbs and Reverend Harold Bennett. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

Oather Douglas Green (March 25, 1943 – Jan. 2, 2016)
Oather Douglas “Mac” Green, 72, of Green Reeson Road, Sugar Grove, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016 at Lifecare of Banner Elk.
Born March 25, 1943 in Crawfordville, FL, he was a son of Robert Albert and Persephone Laird Green. Mac and Anne were active members of Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Valle Crucis. After retiring from Pittsburg Paint and Glass in Tallahassee, FL, the Greens moved to Sugar Grove and Mac worked for fifteen years at Blowing Rock Hospital.
Mr. Green is survived by his wife of 38 years, Anne Marsh Green; son, Michael Green and wife Rabob of Atlanta, GA; step-daughter, Kathy Harpe of Tallahassee, FL; and step-son, Ken Harpe Jr. of Zephyr Hills, FL. Five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Albert and Persephone Laird Green; two brothers and two sisters.
Memorial services will be conducted Friday, January 8, at 11 oclock at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Valle Crucis, officiated by Father Allan McCaslin. Graveside services will follow at the Old St. Johns Episcopal Church Cemetery.

Mr. Gary Lee Aldridge, 70, of John Erwin Road, Banner Elk, passed away Friday evening, January 1, 2016, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir.
Mr. Aldridge was born September 23, 1945 in Avery County, a son of the late Lonnie Ray Aldridge and Floy Helen Norman Aldridge. He was the co-owner of L.R. Aldridge Roofing Company of Boone, North Carolina, and a member of Elk Valley Baptist Church.
Mr. Aldridge is survived by a son,Shawn Aldridge of Banner Elk; a daughter, Shannon Aldridge of Jefferson; one brother, Norman Ray Aldridge of Greenville, Tennessee; one sister, Shirley Vance of Marion, North Carolina; two granddaughters, Brittany Worley and Sierra Aldridge; one grandson, Shawn Queen and wife Heather; and four great-grandchildren, Luke and Andrea Worley and Summer and Autumn Queen. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lonnie Ray Aldridge and Floy Helen Norman Aldridge, and a brother, Lonnie Clay Aldridge.

Joan Clark Stewart (Nov. 27, 1933 – Dec. 31, 2015)
Joan Clark Stewart, 82, passed away on December 31, 2015 in New Ellenton, SC.
A native of Avery County, she was born November 27, 1933 a daughter of the late Sam T.and Myrtle Greene Clark.
She worked for Owens Corning Fiberglass for 9 years. Joan loved all animals, especially her dog, Zack and her two cats. She also raised chickens as pets for many years.
Along with her parents Joan was preceded in death by her: husband, Jack W. Stewart.
Joan has left to cherish her memory her: daughters, Jackie Keenan, Jeannie Hartley Bolen, Judy Clark; grandchildren, Kerri P. Gladden, Shannon P. Gayle, Jason Puett; great grandchildren, Ashley Allen, Peyton Gayle, Dylin Gladden, Briannah Gladden; great-great granddaughter, Ella Allen; and her extended families in South Carolina will miss their “Mimi” as well.

Alla Neshatayeva (June 18, 1957 - Dec. 30, 2015)
Alla Neshatayeva, 58, of Howards Knob Road, Boone, passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem.
Alla was born June 18, 1957 in Moscow, Russia, a daughter of Nina Mikhailovna Goryushina Neshatayeva and the late Ananiy Alexandrovich Neshatayev. She was an adjunct faculty member of the Hayes School of Music of Appalachian State University, and was of the Russian Orthodox faith.
Alla is survived by her husband, Bair D. Shagdaron of the home; one daughter, Anastasia Shagdaron of Boone; one son, Maxim Shagdaron of Boone; her mother, Nina Neshatayeva of Moscow, Russia; and one sister, Olga Neshatayeva of Moscow, Russia. She was preceded in death by her father, Ananiy Alexandrovich Nesharayev.
Funeral services for Alla Neshatayeva will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, January 5, 2016 at 2:00 o’clock at Saints Peters and Paul Orthodox Church. Officiating will be Father Onouphry Keith.

Boyd M. Franklin (June 4, 1926 – Dec. 30, 2015)
Boyd McDonald Franklin, affectionately known by his family and friends as Paco, age 89, of Boone, passed away Wednesday December 30, 2015. He was a native of Avery County and the son of the late Gurney and Alda English Franklin.
He was a lifelong member of Linville Falls Community Church and attended Advent Christian Church in Boone where he sang in the choir.
He studied Mechanical Engineering at Howard College(now Samford University) in Birmingham, Alabama before serving in the U.S. Navy in October 1945 where he was assigned to the USS Boyd out of San Pedro, CA.
Boyd was a Mechanical Engineer and an electrician by trade, operating Boyd Franklin Electric for many years. He was a design engineer with Cellu Products Company and later Sealed Air Corporation. He retired from Sealed Air Corporation in 1997.
In his later years he was a Master Boat Builder, building his own houseboat from the pontoon up.
He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVerne Killian Franklin, a son, Sidney Dale Franklin and a granddaughter, Marion Franklin. He is survived by a sister, Jean Crenshaw of Linville Falls. A daughter, Leigh Ann Russ. One step son Andy Martin and wife Stephanie of Boone, two step daughters, Morgan Redmond and husband Tom of Boone, and Jennifer Sigmon and husband Mark of Hickory.
Seven granddaughters; Evangeline Redmond, Avery Martin, Jillian Martin, Tesia Earley, Anna Bigelow, Casey Hedrick, and Leah Bridges.
One grandson, Jonah Martin, and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services from Mr. Franklin will be conducted Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 2 p.m. in the Advent Christian Church, Boone. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 1 p.m.

Mr. Benjamin Harry Singley, Jr., age 77, of Woodring Circle, Boone, passed away Thursday afternoon, Dec. 30, 2015 at his residence.
Mr. Singley was born March 20, 1938 in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Benjamin Harry Singley, Sr., and Dorothy Orndorf. He was a retired shoe cobbler, having worked in the industry in Florida for over twenty years and in Boone for over fifteen years. He was also a U.S. Navy Veteran.
Mr. Singley is survived by one daughter, Wanda Fogelman of Pennsylvania; a step-son, Christoper Atkins of Boone; three grandchildren, Brandon, Brandy and Daniel; one sister, Patricia Bales and husband Robert of Paradise, California; one step-sister, Debra Orndorf Tindal of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and one aunt, Terry Mackes of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by numerous cousins in Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Debbie Atkins Singley, his father and mother, Benjamin Harry Singley, Sr., and Dorothy Orndorf, his step-father, Edgar Orndorf, one brother, Richard Singley, and a step-brother, R.F. Orndorf.
A memorial service for Mr. Benjamin Harry Singley, Jr., will be held at a later date.

Eddie Darrell Winebarger (March 28, 1951 – Dec. 28, 2015)
Eddie Darrell Winebarger, age 64, of Newland passed away on December 28, 2015 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.
A native of Avery County, he was born March 28, 1951 a son of the late Virgil Winebarger and Gloria Ferguson Winebarger of Roan Mountain.
He worked in construction as a drywall finisher and enjoyed playing guitar, singing, watching sports on the tv and listening to them on the radio.
Along with his father, Eddie was preceded in death by brothers; Robert and Paul Winebarger.
Along with his mother, Eddie has left to cherish his memory his: sister, Carlene Guinn and husband Burnie of Newland; nephews; Richard Guinn, David Guinn, Paul L. Winebarger; nieces Dawn Hicks and Kristie Winebarger.
Graveside services for Eddie Darrell Winebarger will be conducted on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at 2:00 pm in the Ferguson Cemetery in Newland. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the graveside services at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
