Mrs. Lucille C. Elliott (June 11, 1925 – Jan. 12, 2016)
Mrs. Virginia Lucille Lindy Culler Elliott, 90, of Willowdale Church Road, Vilas, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 12, 2016 at Watauga Medical Center. Born June 11, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Vance and Beatrice Culler. Mrs. Elliott was a homemaker and a longtime member of Willowdale Baptist Church.
She is survived by her children, Gwen Lowrance of Banner Elk, Bill Elliott and wife Gail of Mountain City, TN, Bob Elliott and fiancé Trudy Thompson of the home, Betty Warren and husband Mark of Vilas, Becky McKinney and husband Lee of Oak Ridge, NC, Loyce Warren and husband Greg of Boone, and Joyce Creed and friend Bobby Crumpler of Vilas, seven grandchildren, Wayne Miller and wife Missy of Banner Elk, Anna Murray and husband Ryan of Wilmington, Justin Warren and wife Amy of Vilas, Kelli Sherwood and husband Jonathan of Vilas, Brandon McKinney of South Bend, Indiana, Katelyn Isaacs and husband David of Vilas, and Corey McKinney of Charleston, SC, eight great grandchildren Heather Breese and husband Adam of Clemmons, MacKenzie Miller of Banner Elk, Morgan and Mason Murray of Wilmington, Adelyn Warren of Vilas, Lindi & Raylin Sherwood of Vilas, and Summer Isaacs of Vilas, a number of nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends, Tam and Bernice McGuire of Sugar Grove.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Don Elliott, two sisters, Mildred McNeil and Juanita Hayes, and her stepmother, Frances Culler.
Funeral services for Mrs. Virginia Lucille Lindy Culler Elliott will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 oclock at Willowdale Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Delmar James, Rev. Kenneth Bryant and Rev. Eugene Braswell. Burial will follow in the Howell Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Dale Price Glover (Nov. 8, 1935 – Jan. 11, 2016)

Dale Price Glover, 80, of Balsam Lane, Banner Elk, passed away Monday evening, Jan. 11, 2016, at his home.
Glover was the son of Captain Horace Dale Glover, Jr., USMS and USCG, of Southport, North Carolina, and the grandson of Lt. Horace Dale Glover, Sr., Revenue Cutter Service, and great grandson of Captain Thomas Mann Thompson of Civil War fame. His mother was Edith Price Glover of Cheshire, England.
He was educated at East Side Elementary School in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Tileston Junior High School in Wilmington, North Carolina and graduated from Chapel Hill High School in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina, and received the degrees of Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Geology and Geophysics in 1959 and 1962.
He received his third degree in Intelligence Analysis from the Defense Intelligence College in Washington, DC in 1989 with Military geology and Engineering Geology options. He was trained at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Lab, Oak Ridge national Lab and others, and was certified in nuclear weapons design and engineering and arms control negotiations.
Glover was a member of several scientific professional societies, including The American Geophysical Union, The American Geosciences Institute, the Seismological Society of America, The Society of American Military Engineers, the Society of Exploration Geologists, Sigma Gamma Epsilon Sinfonia, and others. He was a member of Masonic Cranberry Lodge 598, the Royal Arch Masons, Chapter 73, the Royal & Select Masters, Council 38 and was a Knight Templar in Commandery 33.
Glover was first employed by Texas Instruments, Inc. after a short stint in exploration for petroleum, and performed basic and applied research into the discrimination of underground nuclear explosions in Dallas, Texas and at the Unita Geophysical Observatory near Vernal, Utah, and as the Director of the Cumberland Plateau Seismological Observatory near McMinnville, Tennessee, under the auspices of the Advances Research Projects Agency. After a stint in Dallas, as assistant manager of the Marine Sciences Department, doing research in passive sonar arrays, he went to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and served as Director of geophysical observatories in Newport, Washington and Adak, Aleutian Islands, Alaska. He then returned to the continental US and was the Director of World Data Center A for Seismology in Boulder, Colorado, being recognized as an expert in seismological monitoring.
After 10 years in Boulder, Colorado, Glover was asked to take the job of Chief of Geology and Geophysics of the US Department of Defense’s Defense Nuclear Agency with offices in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the Nevada Test Site, Mercury, Nevada, managing and overseeing the containment of radioactive materials from underground nuclear explosions, including the direction of several underground nuclear tests. He also performed studies of underground mining techniques for nuclear explosions.
Glover was then asked to take over the Chairmanship of the joint Atomic Energy Intelligence Committee under the auspices of the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC. He was also a member of the US Delegation in Geneva, Switzerland, to the Nuclear Arms Control Treaty negotiations, where he was instrumental in writing the Protocols for the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, the Threshold Test Ban Treaty, and the Peaceful Nuclear Explosion Treaty. He was internationally recognized as an expert in nuclear testing. Glover also consulted on petroleum leases and other mineral deposits in several Western states, as well as consulting for the Bureau of Mines.
Glover was adjunct instructor/professor of geology/geophysics for the University of Alaska, the College of Southern Maryland and Mayland Community College.
Glover was an accomplished trombonist and played in several symphony orchestras, concert and brass bands, symphonies, ensembles, and was a regular trombonist for the Ice Capades, etc. He helped pay for his college expenses for playing with such groups. He had his own 10-20 piece “big band” or jazz (swing) band of professional and semiprofessional musicians, playing original manuscripts of such as Glen Miller–whose instrumentalists also played with him. Glover was extremely proud of his association with such musicians who played with Miller, Jackie Gleason, Snooki Lansiig, Dorsi Scott, etc. and those who arranged with such notables as the “Hit Parade”, and other major TV and stage productions.
His hobbies included firearms collection, shooting trap, high power rifle completion sled dog training and mushing, among others.
He is survived by his lovely wife of 53 years, the beautiful J. Ernestine Townsend Glover of Banner Elk. His son, John Dale Glover of Charlotte; one daughter, Janet Aletta Glover Ohrt and husband Jason, and grandson, Logan Ohrt, all of Phoenix, Arizona; one sister, E. Aletta Glover Briggs and husband Dr. Andrew G. Briggs of Butner, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Janice Townsend Lecka and husband Vance of Banner Elk; his nieces and nephews, Linda Dale Hawkins, John Briggs, Esq., Carol Otis and her children Dianna and Erica Dale, and one cousin, Jill Campbell of Cheshire, England. Glover was an active member of The Church of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Valle Crucis, serving in the Vestry and as Eucharistic Minister.
Memorial services for Dale Price Glover will be conducted Saturday morning, Jan. 16, 2016, at 11:00 o’clock, at The Church of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church. Officiating will be Father Allan McCaslin.

Charles Carroll Young (Jan. 22, 1937 – Jan. 11, 2016)
Charles Carroll Young, age 78, went home to be with The Lord on Monday, January 11, 2016 at Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born January 22, 1937, he was the son of the late Floyd and Cordie English Young.
Charles was a Jet Mechanic for the Air Force and worked in drywall.
He enjoyed rabbit and fox hunting, dancing to bluegrass music, playing the guitar and singing and was known for saying “If you’re gonna do it, do it right”.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Juanita Buchanan Young; grandson, Charles Allen Young; great granddaughter, Ava Jayne Young.
Survivors are: his wife, Audrey Curtis Young; children, Elana Howell and husband John of Green Mountain, Keith Young and wife Dee of Roan Mtn., Kenny Young and wife Mary of Red Hill, Lee Young and wife Phyllis of Green Mtn., Daniel Young and wife Julie of Buladean, Eddie Young and wife Julia of Burnsville; step daughter, Sharon Poarch and husband Kenny of North Wilkesboro; 14 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; brother and sisters, Robert, Thelma, Betty, Doris, Phyllis, Jackie, Becky.

Dale Adams, Sr. (Feb. 20, 1919 – Jan. 10, 2016)
Dale D Adams, Sr., 96, of Dale Adams Road, Sugar Grove, passed away Sunday, January 10, 2016 at James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center in Mountain Home, TN.
Born in Watauga County on February 20, 1919, Dale was a son of Soloman and
Virgie Cornett Adams. A disabled American veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during WWII. For many years he was an active member of Cove Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Adams retired from R. D. Hodges Oil Company. An avid golfer, Dale has been a member of the Boone Golf Course since 1961.
Mr. Adams is survived by his wife, Earlena Greene Adams; sons, Dale Adams, Jr and wife Mary of Vilas and Kent Adams of Lenoir; grandson, Jason Adams and wife Krystal, of Oklahoma; step grandson, Tony Glenn and wife Stephanie, of Vilas; great granddaughter, Chelsea Adams; great-grandsons, Garrett, Justus, Melchia and Elijah Adams; and step-great grandchildren, Gideon and Melea Glenn. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Adams; sisters, Margaret Grigg and Reba Bingham; and grandson, Randy Adams.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 14, at 2 PM at Cove Creek Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Shelby Stephens and Rev. Daniel Lawrence. The body will lie in state from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the Cove Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

James Carroll Brookshire, Sr. (Aug. 26, 1938 – Jan. 8, 2016)
James Carroll Brookshire, 77, of Todd, NC, passed away Friday morning, Jan. 8, 2016. He was the beloved husband of Elaine Coulter Brookshire of the home, and beloved father of James Carroll Brookshire, Jr of Los Angeles, California and Susan Elaine Brookshire of Deep Gap, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas Brookshire and Lucille Shinn Brookshire, formerly of Lenoir and Deep Gap, NC.
He was a native of Lenoir, NC and graduated from Lenoir High School and from Catawba College, Salisbury, NC, receiving a BA in Accounting and a Minor in Music. After graduation he worked for several CPA firms in Lenoir before moving to Boone in 1966 and working as Accountant for Tweetsie Railroad, Inc. and Hound Ears Lodge and Club, Blowing Rock, NC. In 1967 he began working at Appalachian State University as an Internal Auditor and became the Director of Audits and Systems. He retired from Appalachian State University in 1998 after serving for 31 years. During that time he was a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors and other system and auditing associations.
He had a passion for music and was an accomplished pianist and organist. He served as church organist for several churches for 52 years, with a majority of the time being at Grace Lutheran Church, Boone. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists and was a charter member and former Secretary-Treasurer of the Boone Chapter of American Guild of Organists. He also enjoyed singing with the Appalachian Chorale on occasion.
Formerly a member of various Lutheran and Presbyterian churches, he was currently a member of Southport Presbyterian Church, Southport, NC, spending the winter months in Oak Island, NC, and attends Bethany Lutheran Church, Boone when in town.
He was a member of the Rotary Club in Boone and Southport and was a Paul Harris Fellow and a benefactor. He was also a member of the Kiwanis club in Lenoir.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, Boone officiated by the Rev. Laura Weant. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park, Lenoir at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends and relatives before the service at 10:00-11:15 a.m. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park, Lenoir at 2:30 p.m.

Joe Shuford (March 10, 1941 – Jan. 8, 2016)
Joe Shuford, 74, of 248 Pine Valley Drive, Boone, passed away Friday afternoon, Jan. 8, 2016, at Watauga Medical Center.
Joe was born March 10, 1941 in Buncombe County, a son of the late James Foryst Shuford and Beatrice Edwards Shuford. He was President of Shuford’s Care Center, Inc. in Boone and a member and former deacon of Perkinsville Baptist Church.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was active in his community and served as past president of the Boone Optimist Club and Little League. Joe was the founder of the Greenway Baptist Pee Wee Basketball Program. He was a strong supporter of Watauga High School Football.
Joe is survived by his wife, Deane Roberts Shuford of the home; one daughter, Denna Rene Shuford of Concord; one son, Jody Shuford and wife Gail of Boone; one grandson, Taylor Shuford of Boone, two sisters-in-law, Betty Shuford Bishop of Candler and Sue Shuford of Barnardsville. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Shuford and Maurice Shuford.
Funeral services for Joe Shuford will be conducted Monday morning, Jan. 11, 2016, at 11:00 o’clock, at Perkinsville Baptist Church. Thomas Carey Miller (Aug. 29, 1920 – Jan. 7, 2016)
Mr. Thomas Carey Miller, age 95, of Meat Camp Road, Boone, passed away Thursday morning, January 7, 2016 at Watauga Medical Center.
Mr. Miller was born August 29, 1920 in Watauga County, a son of the late George Miller and Bessie Neeley Miller. He was a retired material handler at IRC/TRW and was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served in World War II. He was a member and deacon of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church, where he had also served as Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher.
Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Anna Mae Miller, of the home; two brothers, Hansford Miller of Denver, North Carolina and Richard Miller of Buford, Georgia; three sisters, Nancy Brown of Pfafftown, North Carolina, Leona Maready and husband Linwood of Chinquapin, North Carolina, and Nell Porter and husband Clint of St. Augustine, Florida; three sisters-in law, Bettye Miller of Vilas, Jeannie Bumgarner and husband Billy of Boone, and Faye Johnson of Boone; and one brother-in-law, Howard Johnson of Boone. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, George Miller and Bessie Neeley Miller; two sisters, Lovely Danner and Betty Chapman; one brother, Malcolm Miller; four sisters-in-law, Edna Miller, Quintilla Miller, Martha Belle Day and Judy Johnson; and five brothers-in-law, Ibry Brown, Cameron Danner, Paul Day, Melvin Chapman and Don Johnson.
Funeral services for Mr. Thomas Carey Miller will be conducted Saturday afternoon, January 9, 2016 at 2:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Lillie Marcella Rachels (May 5, 1928 – Jan. 7, 2016)
Mrs. Lillie Marcella Quick Rachels, age 87, of Oxendine School Road, Maxton, North Carolina, passed away Thursday morning, January 7, 2016 at Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living in Boone.
Mrs. Rachels was born May 5, 1928 in Cherwaw, South Carolina, one of the eight children born to the late George Sampson Quick, Sr. and Mary Hatcher Quick Hurst.
She and her husband, Percy Lee Rachels, Sr., raised seven children together. Lillie helped support her husband’s career as a tenet farmer near Gibson, North Carolina and later as an employee of McNair Farms. She held a number of public jobs including Nursing Assistant at Scotland Memorial Hospital and later as an employee of Ingraham Watch Company in Laurinburg, North Carolina.
In 1968, they moved their family to the Wakulla Community near Red Springs, North Carolina, where they fell in love with the community and resided until their deaths.
She spent countless hours in her flower garden, and many neighbors and friends have benefited from her passion, as well as members of Montpelier Presbyterian Church in Wagram, North Carolina. Many of Lillie’s flowers have been seen in the pulpit bouquets through the years. She was a long time member of Montpelier where she dedicated her time as the Nursery attendant and received the Presbyterian Women’s Honorary Life Membership Award.
When her children reached adulthood, she pursued another passion by becoming a caregiver and companion to various individuals in Scotland and Robeson Counties. She considered care giving as her gift from God and loved every minute of her employment.
Mrs. Rachels is survived by three daughters, Mary Marcella Proctor and husband Wilson of Sanford, Nancy Lee Rachels Foster and husband Larry of Boone, and Betty Jean Ammons and husband Ben of Wagram; five sons, Percy Lee Rachels, Jr. and wife Donna of Laurinburg, Robert Thomas Rachels and wife Nora of St. Pauls, Calvin Melvin Rachels and wife Beth of Red Springs, James Edward Rachels and wife Felice of Holt, Florida and George F. Peele and wife Linda of Supply; two brothers, Ralph Edward Quick and wife Frances of Mount Gilead and Carl Harrison Quick and wife Maxine of Pickens, South Carolina; sixteen grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, and special friends the Bill Shaw family, the Lillian Buie family, the Baxley family and neighbor Florence Gaitley.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, George Sampson Quick, Sr., and Mary Hatcher Quick Hurst; infant twin daughters; a great-grandson; three brothers, James Rufus Quick, George S. Quick, Jr., and William Carson Quick; and two sisters, Shirley Miller and Rachel Parker.
A Celebration of Life Service for Lillie Marcella Quick Rachels will be held Sunday afternoon, January 10, 2016 at 3:00 o’clock at Monpelier Presbyterian Church in Wagram, North Carolina. Burial will be private at a later date. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall, following the service.
