Kenneth Thomas Miller, Sr. 
(July 18, 1958 – February 5, 2018) 

     Kenneth Thomas Miller, Sr., age 59, of Indian Grave Road, Lenoir, passed away Monday morning, February 5, at the Johnson City Medical Center. Born July 18, 1958 in Watauga County, he was a son of Allie Baxter and Clemmie Alice Miller. Kenneth was a long time carpenter with Weaver Construction Company. He was a people person who saw the good in everyone. Kenneth loved spending time with his family, enjoyed working, listening to blue grass music, and was always ready to sit down to a good meal with family and friends. 
    Mr. Miller is survived by his wife of 39 years, Carolyn Coffey Miller; daughter, Mary Nelson and husband, Bryon, of Boone; his father and mother-in-law Troy and Mary Coffey of Boone; two grandchildren, three brothers, two sisters, a number of nieces and nephews, special sister-in-law, Doris Miller; special nieces, Jeanie Miller; and a host of family and friends. 
    Funeral arrangements for Kenneth Thomas Miller, Sr. are incomplete.

Margaret S. (Marge) Clevenger 
(December 18, 1923 – February 1, 2018) 

    Margaret “Marge” Steehler Clevenger, age 94, formerly of Deep Gap, passed away Thursday morning, February 1, 2018 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation. Born December 18, 1923 in Rochester, NY, she was a daughter of Charles Mathias and Margaret Helen Schmidt Steehler. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother and great-grandmother, Marge loved her family beyond measure. Her greatest joy was laughing with family, cooking for gatherings, and enjoying her Bloody Mary every Friday. Marge and her late husband, Theodore, retired to the Triplett community. She enjoyed being with people and quickly became active in the community. She was named Woman of the Month in September, 2003. Mrs. Clevenger volunteered at Ram’s Rack, Watauga Medical Center, The Seby B. Jones Cancer Center, and the Shepherds Committee at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. She participated in the Senior Bowling League, High Country Senior Games, and line dancing at the Senior Center with the High Country Silver liners. 
    Mrs. Clevenger is survived by her sons, Dan Clevenger and wife, Janet, and Ted Clevenger and wife, Crystal, all of Deep Gap; and four grandchildren, Ted Clevenger and wife, Katy, of Asheville, Brian Clevenger of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Fred Clevenger and wife, Jennifer, and Rebecca Moore, all of West Palm Beach, FL; and four great-grandchildren, Bodhi Clevenger of Asheville, Logan Clevenger, Mia Moore and Liam Moore, all of West Palm Beach, FL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Brendan Clevenger. 
    A funeral Mass for Marge Clevenger will be celebrated Monday morning, February 12, 2018 at 11 o’clock at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, officiated by Father Matthew Codd. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 oclock, prior to services, at St. Elizabeth. Graveside services will be private at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

Betty Jean Norris Greene 
(March 12, 1946 – January 31, 2018) 

   Betty Jean Norris Greene, age 71, of Old US Highway 421, Zionville, passed away Wednesday morning, January 31, 2018 at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone. Born March 12, 1946 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of James Earl and Betty Ruth Hodges Norris. 
    Betty Jean loved her family and adored her grandchildren. Her favorite pass-time was tending to her flowers and working with her yard shrubbery. 
    Ms. Greene is survived by her former husband and caregiver, Gale Greene; daughters, Angela Brown and husband, Greg, of Mountain City and Anita Greene and husband, William, of Zionville; brother, Baxter Norris and wife, Keeta, of Zionville; four grandchildren, Aaron Greene and wife, Jennifer, of Trade, Jakob Greene of Zionville, Savannah Gentry and husband, Chip, and Kenneth Brown, all of Mountain City; and two great-grandchildren, Blake Greene of Trade and Kynlee Gentry of Mountain City. A number of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles also survive. 
    She was preceded in death by her parents.
    Funeral services for Betty Jean Norris Greene will be conducted Saturday morning, February 3, at 11 oclock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Vernon Eller and Rev. Virginia Peurifoy. Graveside services will follow at the Union Baptist Church Cemetery.

David L. Shook 
(March 20, 1941 – January 31, 2018) 

    David Lee Shook, age 76 of The Foscoe Community, passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2018. He was the son of the late Jeffrey and Beulah Tester Shook. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth Townsend, Margaret Adams, Evelyn Johnson and special nephew Caleb Johnson.
    David loved serving the community. He was a member and deacon of the Watauga Baptist Church. He served on the Foscoe Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors since its inception in 1971. He was also a member of the Foscoe Ruritan Club.
    He is survived by his wife, Lucy Shook, two sons, Mike Shook and wife Brenda, and Mark Shook and his wife Amy. Also surviving are two sisters, Betty Norwood of Banner Elk and Mary Helen Brown of Morganton. Three grandchildren, Mason, Alexis and Jeffrey Shook. Dave is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, including his special nephew Seth Johnson.
    Funeral services for David Lee Shook will be conducted Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Watauga Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
    The family will receive friends Friday evening, February 2, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Janice Gayle Parlier Bruce 
(November 05, 1949 – January 28, 2018) 

     Janice Gayle Parlier Bruce, 68, loving wife of Lee Bruce, passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at her residence surrounded by her beloved family. 
    Born in Boone, NC, on November 5, 1949, Gayle was the daughter of the late Hade Monroe Parlier and Reba Norris Parlier. Gayle and her husband owned and operated Bruces Upholstery and Fabrics for 30 years. She attended Marshall Road Church of God.
    In addition to her husband, Lee, Gayle is survived by her children Brian Bruce (Amanda) of Anderson, Mike Smith of Boone, NC, and Sonia Bruce Masterson (Scott) of Greenwood; and four grandchildren, Caden Smith, Bradlee and Brooklyn Masterson and Landen Bruce.
    The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday, January 29, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 30 at 2:00p.m. with Pastor Nathan Hayes officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Wilma Eggers Miller

June 11, 1928 – February 03, 2018

Wilma Eggers Miller, age 89, of Valley Hill Drive, Vilas, passed away Saturday morning, February 3, 2018, at her home.

Wilma was born June 11, 1928 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Ralph Marvin Eggers and Polly Eggers Miller. She was the retired owner and operator of Wilma’s Beauty Salon and a member of Willowdale Baptist Church.

Wilma is survived by two sons, Michael Miller of Zionville, and Geoff Miller and wife Ciss of Marietta, Georgia; three granddaughters, Ashlee Sasser and husband Holt of Blowing Rock, Georgette Miller of Marietta, Georgia and Cindy Clark of Kingsport, Tennessee; three grandsons, Derek Cox of Blowing Rock, Eric Miller of Boone and Adam Miller and wife Kim of Hickory; three great-grandsons, Riley Sasser, Caden Cox, and Cooper Cox; one great-granddaughter, Chaney Miller, and one daughter-in-law, Vicki Miller of Vilas. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Gregory L. “Greg” Miller, her step-father, Robert Miller, one sister, Velma Henson and one brother, Ralph Eggers.

Funeral services for Wilma Eggers Miller will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, February 7, 2018, at 2:00 o’clock, at Willowdale Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Eugene Braswell. Burial will follow in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Barbi Quatrano

June 22, 1940 – January 30, 2018

Barbara Bishko Quatrano, age 77, of Maple Ridge Drive, Boone, passed away Tuesday morning, January 30, 2018, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Barbi made Boone her permanent residence in 2003. With her extraordinary ability to engage anyone, she introduced herself as “Barbi Q.” She quickly found kindred spirits in the art community. She also joined the Temple of the High Country and participated in many Jewish activities in Boone and Blowing Rock. She pursued friendship and service with some of the areas oldest residents, college students, and everyone in between. In return, everyone she engaged also rewarded her with a newfound sense of identity, belonging and purpose

Barbi is survived by her sister, Nan Iwasaki of Los Angeles, California, her son, Stephen Quatrano and wife Doreen Karoll of Lexington, Massachusetts; two daughters, Beth Q Diamond and husband Marc of Dallas, Texas, and Carrie Q Singh and husband Vijay of Charleston, South Carolina; three granddaughters, Sarah Quatrano of Jacksonville, Florida, Nadia Diamond of Cleveland, Ohio, and Maela Singh of St. Louis, Missouri; two grandsons, Alex Quatrano and wife Catherine of Boston, Massachusetts, and Ben Diamond of Princeton, New Jersey.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Harold and Rosalie Graiver Bishko; two brothers, Donald Bishko and Stephen Bishko, and one sister, Elaine Durkac.

A memorial service for Barbi Quatrano were conducted Friday afternoon, February 2, 2018, at Temple of the High Country. Officiating was Rabbi Stephen Roberts.

Dr. Samuel McDowell Steele, Jr. M.D.

March 16, 1939 – February 2, 2018

Samuel McDowell Steele, Jr. M.D. was born on March 16, 1939 to Maxine Meek Steele and Samuel McDowell Steele at their home in Osawatomie, Kansas. He passed away February 2, 2018 at his home in Newland, North Carolina

He was a graduate of Osawatomie schools, earned a BS and MS in Mathematics at Pittsburg State University and an MD from the University of Kansas. He was a graduate of the National War College at Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C. 

After being graduated from the University of Kansas, he did an internship in the U.S. Navy at Charleston, SC. His residency was at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA in Urology. Included in his 27 years Naval Career Captain Steele was Chairman of Urology in Portsmouth, VA with 8 residents and Task Force Director of the Combat Casualty Car Course at Fort Sam Houston Texas. 

His military medals include the Legion of Merit, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and National Defense Medal x 2. Other recognitions are The Committee on Emergency Medical Service, American Medical Association presented and Award of Appreciation for his contributions toward improvement of medical readiness in the uniformed services and for the planning, development, implementation and guidance of the Armed Forces Combat Casualty Care Course; Pittsburg State University Alumni Meritorious Achievement award; and Outstanding Alumnus for Osawatomie High School.

After leaving the Navy he came to Avery County in 1993 to practice at Charles A. Cannon and Sloop Hospital and later added Spruce Pine Hospital in Mitchell County. He very much enjoyed his years practicing Urology in the mountains.

He loved the Lord and had served on the deacon body at First Baptist Church Newland. 

He enjoyed swimming, scuba diving and snow skiing. He and his wife, Olivia, enjoyed traveling all over the world and going to the Atlantic Coast beaches. He especially looked forward to going to alumni reunions in Kansas and to his war college class Christmas party in the Washington D.C. area. 

He leaves behind his wife of 57 years Olivia Smith Steele, of the home, his son Andrew of Albuquerque, NM, sister-in-law Shirley Shores and husband Wyman of Galveston, TX, and sister-in-law Anna Smith of Gassville, AR.

The service will be conducted by Dr. Bill M. Jones at First Baptist Church Newland on Tuesday, February 6. Visitation is at 3PM and funeral service at 4PM. A military graveside service will be February 13, at 2PM in the Osawatomie Cemetery in Osawatomie, KS.

Jean Parlier Cook

August 9, 1928 – February 1, 2018

Jean Nellie Cook, age 89, of Banner Elk, North Carolina passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Cranberry House surrounded by family and friends. 
She was born on August 9, 1928 in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of John Parlier and Lena Storie Parlier.
Jean was a long time member of Elk Valley Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. Jean loved spending time with her family and friends.
She was always doing for others and always had a smile. She was an amazing seamstress who made many friends through her love for sewing. Her health brought her to Cranberry House where she called home for 5 years and touched many lives. 
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Dennis Cook, Brothers: John Parlier Jr., Wayne Parlier, Jim Parlier; Sisters; Alma Sumpter, Mary Smith, Pearl Ann McGuire

Glenyce Mann

November 29, 1938 – January 31, 2018

Glenyce Mann, age 79, of Land Harbor passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at Life Care Center in Banner Elk, NC.

She was born on November 29, 1938 in Lake Wales, Florida, to Marston and Alice Stern.

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her Sister, Betty MacQueen.

Glenyce was a member of First Baptist Church of Newland and she was also a member of the church choir. She was an extraordinary tennis player. She enjoyed Gospel Music. She also enjoyed gardening and interior design.

Glenyce leaves behind to cherish her memory: her Husband of 62 years Bill Mann of Newland, NC, Son, Rick (Roxane) Mann of Longwood, FL, Daughter, Susan (Frank) Salamone of Simpsonville, SC, Grandson, Zac Salamone of Simpsonville, SC, Granddaughter, Kate Salamone of Simpsonville, SC, Grandson, Branson Mann of Longwood, FL.

A Memorial Service for Glenyce will be Saturday February 24, 2018 at First Baptist Church Newland at 2PM. The Visitation will start at 1 and continue until the service hour.
