Mary Hicks Wallace (May 2, 1928 – Feb. 21, 2016)
Mary Hicks Wallace, 87, of Mast Gap Road, Sugar Grove, widow of Roy Hampton Wallace, passed away Sunday morning, February 21, 2016 at her residence.
Mary was born May 2, 1928 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Walter Charles Hicks and Jenny Wren Baird Hicks. She was a retired employee of IRC/TRW in Boone, and a member of Baird’s Creek Baptist Church.
Mary is survived by two daughters, Linda Wallace Taylor of Sugar Grove, and Brenda Wallace of Boone; three sons, Jimmy Wallace of Fletcher, North Carolina, Bobby Wallace and fiancée Brandy Dotson, and Bruce Wallace and his companion Sherrilyn Tyndall, all of Sugar Grove; eight granddaughters, Kelly Trivette of Sugar Grove, Heather Arnold of Zionville, Traci Hoosier of West Jefferson, Jenna Wallace of Hendersonville, Kailey Lewis of Boone, Brandi Wallace of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Mary Wallace of Hendersonville, and Nichole Cook of Sugar Grove; two grandsons, Jamie Wallace of Fletcher, North Carolina, and Johnny Hollars of Sugar Grove; one brother, Glenn Hicks and wife Judy of Lenoir, and three sisters-in-law, Ruth Hicks of Boone, Faye Hicks of Lenoir, and Juanita Smith of Boone. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Hampton Wallace, and four brothers, her twin-brother, Mack Hicks, Frank Hicks, Fred “Shorty” Smith, and Reverend Gene Smith.
Funeral services for Mary Hicks Wallace will be conducted Wednesday morning, February 24, 2016, at 11:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend David Ward. Burial will follow in the Liberty-Matney Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday morning, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service. Scottie Winkler Rosenberg (May 9, 1936 – Feb. 18, 2016)
Scottie Sue Winkler Rosenberg, 79, of Boone passed away at home February l8, 2016.
Her family was by her side. Scottie was born in North Carolina and moved to California as a young adult, living there for many years. Her fondest childhood memories took place on Winkler Creek in Boone. In 1978 she returned to Winklers Creek, built a log cabin and began a decades long creative project of making, collecting and restoring art and antiques. Scottie will be remembered for her boundless artistic abilities, her wit, humor and strength of spirit.
She is survived by her two children, Teonnie Hamby and husband, David, of Sparta, NC; and Nicki Conti of Pahoa, Hi. There are four grandchildren, Ryan Abrams, Adam Hamby, Samantha Croswell and Karyn Meeks Madsen. There are also seven great-grandchildren; Asher, Talon, Winkler, Jake, Lillie, Mickey and Meyer.

Beverly Jane Wright Meister (April 13, 1921 - Feb. 18, 2016)
Beverly Jane Wright Meister, 94, passed away peacefully on the evening of February 18, 2016, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation, Boone, NC.
Beverly, known as “Bev” to her family and friends, was born on April 13, 1921, to the late Clyde and Mildred Wright in Elyria, Ohio. She graduated from Elyria High School in 1939 and attended Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Beverly also attended the Oberlin Business School and University of Akron to become a certified teacher. She married her college sweetheart, the late Herbert Meister, in 1943, and they raised two sons together.
Beverly was a loving daughter, niece, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She taught piano lessons in her home and bookkeeping and typing classes at a local high school in Oberlin, Ohio before moving to Troy, Michigan in the early 1970s and later to Oldsmar, Florida in 1978. In 1987, she and her husband purchased a vacation home in Blowing Rock, NC. In 1993, she became a year-round resident of the High Country. In 2000, she moved to nearby Boone, NC to be closer to her family.
A devoted Christian, she was a past member of the First Congregational United Church in Elyria, Ohio, the Heritage United Methodist Church in Clearwater, Florida, the Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock, NC, and most recently the Boone United Methodist Church in Boone, NC. Known as a “social butterfly” throughout her life, she enjoyed hosting friends at her home. She also loved playing bridge, working on puzzles, reading novels, and attending local musical performances, particularly those of her youngest son, Scott.
In addition to volunteering at local hospitals, she knitted and donated hundreds of newborn pink and blue baby caps for children born at Watauga Medical Center. She especially loved her annual summer vacations on Lake Dubourne in Ontario, Canada with family and lifelong friends at the Ohio Wesleyan Battlepoint Association in Blind River, Ontario.
Beverly is survived by her two sons, Rev. David Meister and wife, Denise, of South Haven, MI and Dr. Scott Meister and wife, Jan, of Boone, NC; five grandchildren, Ehren Meister and wife, Nicole, of Raleigh, NC, Gretchen Meister Kelly and husband, Ryan, of Durham, NC, Kristan Meister of Charlotte, NC, Michael Meister of Three Rivers, Michigan and Dawn Meister of Battle Creek, Michigan; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Meister, and her aunt Ruth Wright Beutel and Uncle Hugh Wright.
The family would like to gratefully acknowledge and thank the staff at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation and Appalachian Brian Estates for their attention and care to Beverly as her health declined. A private family memorial service will be held and entombment will occur alongside her late husband at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens in Palm Harbor, Florida. Brigadier General Roy Kenneth Flint (Oct. 22, 1928 – Feb. 17, 2016)
Brigadier General Roy Kenneth Flint, US Army Retired, age 87, of Valle Crucis, North Carolina, died peacefully at his home on February 17, 2016.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joy Ellen, and four children and seven grandchildren; Lisa Ellen Flint Yarn and husband Douglas, and their children, Molly Greer and Charles; Paul Warren Flint and wife Laurie, and their daughter Carlyn; Christopher Greer Flint and wife Tara, and their daughters, Anna, Greer Ellen, and Marion; and Amy Flint Howard and husband John, and their son William.
After graduating from University of Michigan in 1950, General Flint enlisted in the Army when the Korean War broke out, graduating later from the Infantry Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. During his distinguished career he served as a company commander in the Korean War and a Battalion Commander in Viet Nam. He served in both the 25th Infantry Division and the 82nd Airborne Division. He was a proud infantryman and had the distinct honor of wearing both U.S. and British paratrooper wings. For his service in combat he was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross among many others.
He later served as professor of military history at the United States Military Academy, as chair of the history department, and finally as Dean of the Academic Board. General Flint received a master’s degree in history from the University of Alabama and a doctorate in history from Duke University. He attended the Army command and General Staff College, the British Staff College, the Armed Forces Staff College and the Air War College. He and his wife Joy moved to Valle Crucis after his retirement from military service. He taught history at Lees McRae College and was an active member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church.
His family will remember his gentle manner, his constant smile, and his strong intellect.
Memorial services for Brigadier General Roy Kenneth Flint will be conducted Sunday afternoon, February 21, 2016, at 3:00 o’clock, at the Church of the Holy Cross in Valle Crucis. Officiating will be Father Allan McCaslin. Military graveside rites and burial, provided by the United States Army, will follow in St. John’s Episcopal Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends, following the graveside service, at Church of the Holy Cross.

Steve Townsend (Oct. 15, 1952 – Feb. 17, 2016)
Mr. Steve Townsend, 63, of Crackers Neck Road, Mountain City, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday afternoon, February 17, 2016, at Johnson County Community Hospital.
Steve was born October 15, 1952, in Avery County, a son of the late Junior Floyd Townsend and Edna Church Townsend Henson. He was a retired custodian for the Watauga County Board of Education, having worked at Cove Creek Elementary School. He was a member of Vanderpool Baptist Church. He enjoyed working and being outside, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Kathy Ward Townsend; two daughters, Tabatha Townsend of Boone and Angela Townsend of Banner Elk; one grandson, Todd Arnette of Boone; two granddaughters, Savannah Ward and Autumn Ward of Vilas; two brothers, Danny Townsend and wife Eva of Vilas; Ronnie Townsend and wife Anna of Emerald Isle; his father-in-law, Reverend Gilbert Ward; two brother-in-laws, Larry Ward and wife Brenda of Lexington and Steve Ward of Sugar Grove; and one sister-in law, Sherry Brown and husband Johnny of Vilas. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law Reda Mae Ward and a niece Reda Gail Brown Garrison.
Funeral services for Mr. Steve Townsend will be conducted Sunday afternoon, February 21, at 2:00 o’clock at Vanderpool Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00. Officiating will be Pastor Andy Watson and Pastor Thomas Brown. Burial will follow in the Vanderpool Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Service.

James C. Bass (May 25, 1953 – February 16, 2016)
James Carol Bass was born May 1953 in Raleigh.
He died peacefully Feb 16, 2016 at home in Banner Elk NC. Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Vickie Beasley Bass.
Surviving family includes his father, Aaron Bass and stepmother Jackie Bass of Raleigh, sister, Elizabeth Bass Behrens of Riverview, FL, brother, William Craven Bass of Banner Elk, NC. Jim was devoted to his family, community, and to his many friends. Growing up in Raleigh his first love was sports, baseball and football, excelling in both.
The Raleigh Sports Club named him Wake County Football Player of the Year for both 1970 and 1971. He was also named as All State athlete playing football for both Broughton and Enloe HSs. Jim helped lead the Broughton football team to the 1970 state championship. He was dubbed Breakaway Bass for his game changing running abilities. He attended both USC in Columbia, SC and ASU in Boone, NC.
Jim and Vickie worked as a property management team for Mill Ridge Resort in Banner Elk for 34 years. Their desire to get to know people and make them feel cared for created a fun and unique community for property owners and weekend visitors. Jim also enjoyed golfing and fishing with his friends.
A memorial service is planned for March 5, 2016 at the Mill Ridge Clubhouse in Banner Elk, NC from 2-4 pm.
A memorial service for family and friends in the Raleigh area will be held at the reception hall of Emmanuel Baptist Church on Noble Rd from 3-5 pm on Sunday, March 6, 2016.

Leigh W. Short (Sept. 24, 1938 - Dec. 1, 2015)
Leigh Short, age 77 of Seminole, passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2015, at Morton Plant Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Boone, NC, on September 24, 1938 to the late Burnice Eugene Wilson and the late Ruth Vivian Carter, she was married to Robert E. Short until his passing. Leigh was a member of Advent Christian Church in Boone, NC.
Leigh is survived by her companion of 20 years, Paul Meyer (Happy); Daughter, Victoria Leigh Acred and husband, Terry J. Acred; Granddaughter, Jaclyn Cannon and husband, James Cannon; Grandson, Robert Palmer and his wife, Kristina Palmer; and Great Grandchildren, Layne Cannon, Sarah Cannon, and two on the way. Leigh was predeceased by her son, Robert B. Inman.
