Regina B. Penland 


(April 29, 1959 – December 20, 2017) 

   Regina B. Penland passed away on December 20, 2017 at the age of 58 while in her home in Boone, NC. She was surrounded by family at the time of her death. She is survived by her brother, Roger Clements, her children, LeeAnna Ewing, Logan Penland, and Stephanie McDonnell, and her grandchildren, Liam, Lana, and Olivia McDonnell. Regina had a unique way of leaving a mark on the lives of everyone she met and will be dearly missed. Services will be private.

Randall L. Burkett

(April 20, 1952 – December 22, 2017)

Mr. Randall L. Burkett, age 65, of 7215 US Highway 421 North, Vilas, passed away Friday, December 22, 2017 at the Foley Center.

He was a member of Mabel United Methodist Church where he served on several church committees and enjoyed assisting with leading the choir. He worked with his father for many years at Burkett Surveyors and later retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation as an inspector. He also served in the North Carolina National Guard.

Mr. Burkett is survived by his wife of 46 years, Donna Winebarger Burkett of Vilas, one son, Garrett Burkett and wife Joanna of Boone, one sister, Kitzi Burkett of West Jefferson and one brother, Donny Burkett of Vilas. He is also survived by several Aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and his special companion, his dog Ike, who was always by his side.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Walter Harold Burkett and Mary Jo Little Burkett.

Funeral services for Mr. Randall L. Burkett will be conducted Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at 2:00 o’clock at Mabel United Methodist Church. Reverend James McKinney will officiate. The body will lie in state at the church from 12:30 until 2:00. 

The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 prior to the service at the church.

Interment will follow in Mabel United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post 130 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Mabel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, in care of J.C. Winebarger, 4166 Old US Highway 421, Zionville, North Carolina 28698.

Pearl Eldreth McGhinnis

(April 26, 1931 – December 20, 2017)

Pearl Eldreth McGhinnis, age 86, of Heritage Oaks Assisted Living and Retirement Village, Corsicana, Texas, a former resident of Boone, passed away Wednesday morning, December 20, 2017, at Navarro Regional Hospital in Corsicana, Texas.

Pearl was born April 26, 1931 in Ashe County, a daughter of the late Chester and Maude Killens Eldreth. She was a retired food service supervisor of Appalachian State University.

Pearl is survived by one daughter, Brenda Haimowitz of Granite Falls; two sons, Jerry McGhinnis and wife Sue of Sugar Grove, and Michael McGhinnis of Boone; one granddaughter, Megan Lambert of Beech Creek, NC; five grandsons, Brandon McGhinnis and wife Sarah of Tacoma, Washington, Justin Hagaman of Boone, Michael Brandon McGhinnis of Boone, Thomas McGhinnis and wife Reva of Powells Point, North Carolina, and Isaac McGhinnis of Sugar Grove; three great-granddaughters, Alli Pearl and Sophie McGhinnis of Tacoma, Washington, and Trinity McGhinnis, of Powells Point, North Carolina; two great-grandsons, Remington and Ruger Hess, both of Powells Point; two sisters, Shelby Jean Combs of Corsicana, Texas, and Sherry “Judy” Osborne and husband Steve of the Creston; two brothers, Joe Eldreth of Lenoir, and Earl Eldreth of Creston; a special sister-in-law, Daisy Hollars of Blowing Rock; a special niece, Angie Lockhart and husband Tommy, and a special nephew, Sam Combs, all of Corsicana, Texas, and a special great-niece and great-nephew, Tara and Robert, both of Corsicana, Texas, three sisters-in-law, June Eldreth of Lenoir, Shirley Eldreth of Jefferson,and Emogene McGhinnis of Zionville; a brother-in-law, Clint Vines of Lenoir, and her extended family at Heritage Oaks Assisted Living and Retirement Village in Corsicana, Texas. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee McGhinnis; two sisters, Flora Mae Vines, and Margaret Russ, and four brothers, Bill, Larry, Lloyd “Tob” and Gary Eldreth.

Funeral services for Pearl Eldreth McGhinnis will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, December 27, 2017, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Steve Osborne. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to World Vision, 34834 Weyerhaeuser Way, Federal Way, Washington, 98001, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee, 38105.
