John Henry McGuire (March 26, 1940 – Dec. 4, 2016)

John Henry McGuire, 76, of Newland passed away on December 4, 2016 at his residence.

A native of Avery County, he was born March 26, 1940 a son of the late Clay and Verna Norris McGuire.

He was a member of the US Army where he served in the Korean/Vietnam Era and was ranked a Staff Sgt. E-6.

John was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

He retired from NCDOC as a Corrections Officer and was Chief Deputy for Avery County under Sheriff Bev Daniels.

Along with his parents, John was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Stephanie McGuire.

John loved his family dearly and spent as much time as he could with them. He has left to cherish his memory his: son, William McGuire and wife Barbara of Statesville, NC.; daughter, Diane Barnes of Hickory, NC.; brother, Harold McGuire and wife Carolyn of Huntersville, NC.; sisters, Bernice McGuire and husband Max of Otto, NC., Joanne Phillips of Franklin, NC., Mary Armstrong and husband Allie of Greenville, TN., Bettie Shomaker and husband Richard of Banner Elk, NC.; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for John Henry McGuire will be conducted on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Mountain Home VA Cemetery in Johnson City, TN. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

John McGrew Brubaker (June 6, 1949 – Dec. 3, 2016)

4030548_wlppJohn McGrew Brubaker, 67, of Sunset Beach, North Carolina a former resident of Boone, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Bolivia, North Carolina.

Mr. Brubaker is survived by his wife, Sandra L. Brubaker of Sunset Beach, North Carolina, one son, John “Michael” Brubaker of Greensboro, North Carolina, his mother, Flora Kidd Brubaker and one brother, Lowell Glenn Brubaker both of Chester, Virginia.

He was preceded in death by one son, Christopher Alan Brubaker, his father, Lowell Edward Brubaker and his father and mother-in-law, William Harrison Lyon Jr. and Mary Newton Lyon.

A memorial service for Mr. John Brubaker will be conducted Friday December 9, 2016 at 2:00 o’clock at First Baptist Church of Boone. Reverend Roy Dobyns will officiate.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.

John was the Former President and CEO of High Country Bank in Boone, NC, which he helped found in 1998. John was also the chief lending officer at Parkway Bank in Lenoir. He had more than 40 years of banking industry experience. When High Country Bank was later acquired by Yadkin Valley Bank, he served as Regional President for bank operations in Watauga and Avery Counties, and as President of Main Street Investments, a subsidiary of the bank. Previously, Mr. Brubaker served as Senior Vice President for Centura Bank and Nationsbank. Earlier in his career, he was City Executive and Vice President with North Carolina National Bank (NCNB).

He was a Boone Area Chamber of Commerce Board Member, Mr. Brubaker received his B.A. in Business Administration from Catawba College. He is a former Dean of the NC School of Banking for the NC Bankers Association; Past President of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce and Boone Sunrise Rotary Club; Past Chair of the Watauga Economic Commission and Watauga County United Way; Past Board of Directors Member and Treasurer of the Watauga Arts Council; and Past Board of Directors Member of the Watauga Education Committee.

Mr. Cabot Hamilton (Feb. 22, 1942 – Dec. 3, 2016)

Robert Cabot Hamilton age 74 of West Jefferson died on Saturday night, December 3, 2016 at Ashe Memorial Hospital shortly after his daughter’s arrival to his bedside.

cabot-hamilton-1480925509Mr. Hamilton was born in North Carolina on February 22, 1942 to Mary Lillian Pendry and George Hamilton III. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, George Hamilton IV.

Cabot was a tireless advocate for local business and industry, he graduated from Reynolds High School in 1960 then graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a bachelor’s in political science and a master’s in education. He worked in the soft drink industry as a representative of Pepsi Co then later Cadbury Schweppes, retiring in 1998. He and his wife, Teri have lived in Ashe County since 1982. Later he then became publisher of the Jefferson Post Newspaper retiring there in 2007. He has guided the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce as a board member and past president later becoming Executive Director in 2008 and serving until his death.

A gathering of friends will be held on Thursday, December 8, 2016 from 4:00-7:00 pm at Badger Funeral Home.

Mr. Hamilton is survived by, his wife, Teri Knox Hamilton, one daughter: Deirdre Hamilton & husband Shann Winesett of Las Vegas, two grandchildren, Sullivan and McKenna Winesett. Also surviving are two sisters in-law, Adelaide “Tink” Peyton Hamilton, Rita Purvis & husband Gerry, one brother in-law, Conway Miller, two nephews, Edwin Peyton Hamilton, George Hamilton, V, three nieces, Mary Dabney Arcure, Nealy Wolf, and Megan Embler.

Gladys Isaacs Potts (April 26, 1931 – Dec. 2, 2016)

4029112_wlppGladys Isaacs Potts, 85, of 995 Isaacs Branch Road, Sugar Grove, passed away Friday evening, December 2, 2016, at Watauga Medical Center.

Mrs. Potts is survived by one daughter, Judy I. Elliott and husband Michael, one son, William R. Potts, Jr. all of Sugar Grove, one granddaughter, Mika Elliott, three grandsons, Jameel Bumpass, William Davis and Sherman Davis. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Raymond Potts, Sr., one daughter, Pamela Evonne Potts, her father and mother, Bert and Zona Johnson Isaacs, four sisters and three brothers.

A private memorial service for Gladys Isaacs Potts will be held at a later date.

Kathy Lynn Trivette (Nov. 18, 1959 – Dec. 1, 2016)

4027242_wlppKathy Lynn Trivette, 57, of 368 Jefferson Road, Boone, passed away Thursday morning, December 1, 2016, at Watauga Medical Center.

Kathy was born Nov. 18, 1959 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Link and Ola Mae Blevins Trivette. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Eugene Trivette of the home; two sons, Paul Trivette and wife Morgan of Mountain City and Charles Trivette of Zionville; one granddaughter, Emma Dugger of Mountain City; one sister, Linda Critcher and husband Gary of Boone, and six brothers, Lloyd Trivette and wife Evon of Shady Valley, Tennessee, Billy Trivette and wife Betsy of Boone, Dwayne Trivette of Ocala, Florida, Jerry Trivette and wife Debbie of Boone, Donny Trivette and wife Ann of Zionville, and Bobby Trivette of Boone. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Trivette.

Funeral services for Kathy Lynn Trivette will be conducted Saturday morning, December 3, 2016, at 11:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Burial will follow in the Ford Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday morning, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Margaret S. Rominger (Aug. 11, 1941 – Nov. 30, 2016)

bigromingermargaret-11Margaret Sue Harmon Rominger, age 75 of Rominger Road, Banner Elk, passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at her residence. She was a lifelong member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, and the daughter of the late Clyde and Eureka Mast Harmon.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Everette Rominger, two sons, Dennis Lynn and Ronald Paul Rominger, one great granddaughter, Grace Trivette. She was also preceded by a brother Len Harmon and a sister, Wanda Harmon.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Dawn May and husband Tom of Sugar Grove, and Marlene Denise Rominger of Banner Elk, two sisters, Faye Presnell and husband Paul of Banner Elk, and Louise Harmon also of Banner Elk. Two brothers, Cecil Harmon and wife Pauline of Banner Elk, and Jimmy Harmon and wife Dianne of Zionville.

Three grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016 at 2 p.m. in the Piney Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service time from 1-2 p.m.

Archie Delmar Roark (Jan. 11, 1947 – Nov. 28, 2016)

4027167_wlppMr. Archie Delmer Roark, 69, of Todd, NC died Monday, November 28, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Roark was born January 11, 1947 in Ashe County to Delmer and Ruth Elliott Roark. Mr. Roark was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Arvil Roark. Mr. Roark was a member of South Fork Baptist Church. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and working with his cattle on his farm.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 pm at South Fork Baptist Church by Rev. David Cooper, Rev. J. D. Walton and Minister Carlton Houck. Burial will follow in Howell Cemetery with military rites.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service at South Fork Baptist Church.

Mr. Roark is survived by: Wife, Virginia Blanche Roark, Son, Kevin Roark and wife Kim of Todd, Sisters, Inamae Sturgill and husband Jim and Barbara Sue Walters and husband Jim all of Warrensville, Brothers, Mike Roark and wife Donna and Danny Roark and wife Norma all of Warrensville, Grandchildren, Kolton and Khloe Roark also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
