Mrs. Maude N. Thompson (July 17, 1930 – December 27, 2016)

Mrs. Maude Norris Thompson, 86, of Vilas, passed away Tuesday morning, Dec. 27, 2016 at Watauga Medical Center. Born July 17, 1930 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late Ronda and Thelma Harmon Norris. Maude was a homemaker and a longtime member of Willowdale Baptist Church.

bigthompson-maude-1She is survived by one daughter, Pat Perry and husband Bob of Vilas, one daughter in law, Trudy Thompson of Vilas, two granddaughters, Regina Triplett and husband Jonathan of Zionville, and Becky Trivette and husband Rusty, two great grandchildren, Kimberly Trivette, Joey Trivette and wife Kristen all of Vilas, and one great-great granddaughter Carlie Buckner of Zionville, two sisters in law, Sofia Safian of New Jersey and Kathryn Norris of Boone and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Don Thompson, one son, Joe Thompson, and a great granddaughter, Nichole Buckner and her husband Jason Buckner, one sister, Wilma Grogan, and three brothers, Earl, David and Howard Norris.

Funeral services for Mrs. Maude Norris Thompson will be conducted Wednesday evening at 7 oclock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Eugene Braswell. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:30 until 7 oclock at the funeral home.

Graveside services and burial for Maude Thompson will be conducted Thursday morning at 10 oclock at Adams Cemetery.

Elaine Coulter Brookshire (May 29, 1938 – Dec. 27, 2016)

4049628_wlppElaine Coulter Brookshire, 78, of River Creek Lane, Todd, passed away Tuesday morning, Dec. 27, 2016, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Elaine was born May 29, 1938 in Newton, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Ralph Horris Coulter and Edith Thorton Coulter. She was a Caldwell County Extension Agent assisting with the 4-H Club, a Dietitian at Cannon Memorial Hospital, and an employee at Markey’s Fabric Store. Elaine volunteered for the Quilt Guild, Home Extension Clubs, and made banners for the church and costumes for the community theater. She was a member of Southport Presbyterian Church in Southport, North Carolina.

Elaine is survived by one daughter, Susan Elaine Brookshire of Deep Gap; one son, James Carroll Brookshire, Jr. of Boise Idaho, and four sisters, Carolyn Coulter of Maiden, Virginia Thornburg and husband Wayne of Conover, Phyllis Keener and husband Jay of Maiden, and Rita Watson and husband Lynn of Conover. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Carroll Brookshire, Sr.

Funeral services for Elaine Coulter Brookshire will be conducted Saturday morning, December 31, 2016, at 11:00 o’clock, at Bethany Lutheran Church. Officiating will be Pastor Laura Weant. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir.

The body will lie in state and the family will receive friends Saturday morning, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Wilma Calloway Moretz (July 4, 1931 – Dec. 26, 2016)

Mrs. Wilma Calloway Moretz, 85, of 186 Deep Gap Drive, Deep Gap, North Carolina, passed away, Monday, December 26, 2016 at her home.

4048580_wlppMrs. Moretz is survived by her husband, Walter Scott Moretz, Jr., of the home, two sons, Dr. David Moretz and wife Gail of Belhaven, North Carolina and Leonard Moretz and wife Kathleen of Raleigh, North Carolina, three Granddaughters, Erin Gardner and husband Ben, Heather Baldwin and husband Rusty and Lauren Santiago and husband Emmanuel, two Grandsons, Matt and Noah Moretz, one step-granddaughter, Alexa Dixon, two step-grandsons, Jeffrey and Gregory Hoffmann, three great-grandsons, Kenan Gardner, Riley Santiago and Sawyer Baldwin, and one great-granddaughter, Karis Gardner. One sister, Velva Lynn Steelman and husband James of North Wilkesboro, two sister-in-laws, Cora Lee Moretz of Franklin, North Carolina and Shirley Calloway of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Survivors also include a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, James Blaine and Ina Whittington Calloway, and three brothers, J.B., Tim and Joe Calloway.

Funeral services for Mrs. Wilma Calloway Moretz will be conducted at 2:00 o’clock Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Grace Lutheran Church.
Pastor John Bollinger and Vicar Sue Lynn White will officiate.
The body will lie in state at the church from 1 until 2.

Internment will follow in Gap Creek Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel.

Albert Forrest Reece (Sept. 6, 1944 – Dec. 25, 2016)

Albert Forrest Reece, 72, of Broadstone Road, Banner Elk, passed away Sunday morning, December 25, 2016, at Watauga Medical Center.

4048525_wlppMr. Reece was born September 6, 1944 in Watauga County, a son of the late Dillard and Gladys Townsend Reece. He was owner and operator of Forrest Reece Construction.

Mr. Reece is survived by his wife, Jane Moretz Reece of the home, one son, Kenneth Reece and one granddaughter Bailey Reece both of Valle Crucis, two sisters, Thelma Byrd of Banner Elk and Marie Aldridge and husband Jerry of Foscoe and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Clarence and Ray Reece.

Memorial services for Albert Forrest Reece will be conducted Sunday afternoon, January 1, 2017, at 2:00 o’clock, at Valle Crucis United Methodist Church. Reverend Jerry Moretz will officiate.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, at the church, following the memorial service until 5:00 o’clock. At other times, friends may call at the residence, 2010 Broadstone Road, the Valle Crucis Community.

LtCmdr. Issa Verges-Saylors (June 18, 1934 – Dec. 23, 2016)

Lieutenant Commander Issa Verges-Saylors, age 82, of Oak Street, Boone, passed away Friday afternoon, December 23, 2016, at Watauga Medical Center.

4047858_wlppLtCmdr. Issa Verges-Saylors was born June 18, 1934 in Guayanilla, Puerto Rico to Arturo Verges and Angelica Gonzalez-Verges. She graduated from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Santurce, Puerto Rico in 1956 and was commissioned as a Ens. Nurse in the US Navy on August 2, 1957. She served for 10 years and received an Honorable Discharge on October 4, 1967.

Issa arrived in Boone in 1970 and worked as a Nurse at Watauga Medical Center until 1976 when she was hired as a Nurse for the ASU Infirmary from which she retired in 1996. She was a parishioner at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Boone. Issa was a wonderful mother, friend and colleague and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by one son, Wes and wife Rebekah Saylors of Boone; two daughters, Valerie and Husband Challace Pair of the US Navy in Hawaii, and Marta Saylors and Rick Gusa of Boone, and three grandchildren, Piper and Ricky Saylors of Boone, and Wesley Pair of Hawaii. She is also survived by six sisters, Vivi Soto of Cajey, Puerto Rico, Carmen Verges of Bristol, Virginia, Sonia and Betty Verges of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Yin Verges of Isabella, Puerto Rico, and Pina Gaskill of Bridgeton, New Jersey.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Bruni Verges Klugman and Elisa Verges, and one brother, Papo Verges.

Funeral arrangements for Lieutenant Commander Issa Verges-Saylors are incomplete at this time.

Mike White (Nov. 20, 1946 – Dec. 22, 2016)

mike-white-1482745300George Michael White, age 70, of Newland passed away on December 22, 2016 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

A native of Avery County, he was born November 20, 1946 a son of the late George Elmer and Helen Dorothy George White.

He was a keen landscaper who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed woodworking and recently started making bowls out of spun wood. Mike tried to take care of everyone.

Mike has left to cherish his memory his wife, Mildred Faye White; daughters, Jane and Billy Toon of Morganton, Peggy Wellmon of Morganton, Diana Lynn White of Morganton, Lisa Gass of Morganton; grandchildren, Rebekah Toon-Antone, Daniel Toon, Michael Wellmon; great grandson, Oliver Chance Antone; sisters, San-Dee Waycaster of Altamont, Lynda Carpenter of Crossnore; brothers, Johnny White of Linville Falls and Gary White of Newland.

Funeral services for Mike White will be conducted at 8pm on Monday, December 26, 2016 at 8:00 pm at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Pastor John Henderson officiating. Interment will follow on Tuesday in the Pisgah Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until the service hour Monday evening at the funeral home.

Jackie Lee Mast (May 12, 1933 – Dec. 21, 2016)

Jackie Lee Mast, age 83, of Sugar Grove, passed away Wednesday morning, December 21, 2016 at his residence.

Mr. Mast was born May 12, 1933 in the Cove Creek Community, a son of the late Hoy Lee Mast and Elizabeth Anderson Mast. He was a retired security officer for Sealed Air Corporation in Lenoir, and attended Mabel Baptist Church. Mr. Mast served in the United States Army during the Korean War, and was awarded The Bronze Star.

4044122_wlppMr. Mast is survived by his wife, Marie Reese Mast of the home; one daughter, Wanda Mast Johnson of Zionville; one son, Michael Lee Mast and wife Diane of Zionville; two grandsons, William Mast and Amanda Hardy of Sugar Grove, and Charlie Johnson and wife Rebecca of Millers Creek; two granddaughters, Amber Jackson and husband Garrick of Boone, and Ayla Cook and husband Jason of Zionville; two great-grandsons, Isaiah Mast and Jayden Cook; five granddaughters, Elizabeth Mast, Madison Mast, Gracie Jackson, Ellary Jackson, and Josie Cook; one brother, Bobby Mast and wife Violet of Northeast, Maryland; two sisters, Jean Vines and husband Pete of Marion, Virginia, and Norma Lee Kyte of Boone, and two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Mast of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and Diane Anderson of Niceville, Florida. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Reverend Carl M. Johnson, and three brothers, Billy Mast, Jim Mast, and Richard Anderson.

Funeral services for Mr. Jackie Lee Mast will be conducted Friday afternoon, December 23, 2016, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Frank Johnson and Reverend Derick Wilson. Military graveside rites and burial, provided by American Legion Post 130 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon, from 12:30 until 1:45, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Barbara Jones Parker (Oct. 4, 1932 – Dec. 21, 2016)

Mrs. Barbara Jones Parker, 84, formerly of Ahoskie, NC, passed away Wednesday, December 21, 2016, in Winston Salem, NC.

Barbara was born in Rosemead, NC in Bertie County on October 4, 1932 to the late Wayland Riddick Jones and Elsie White Jones. Barbara graduated from Mars Hill High School and then attended Chowan College. She worked at Ridgecroft School as the business manager for twenty years.

Barbara married George B. “Buck” Parker on June 20, 1953 at Mars Hill Baptist Church. They were happily married for 63 years and enjoyed raising two daughters. Buck and Barbara lived in Ahoskie, NC, for 37 years, retired to Blowing Rock, NC, for 16 years and spent the past 10 years in Advance, NC.

Surviving are her daughters, Dawn Parker Copeland and husband William of Birmingham, AL, and Terri Parker Jones and husband Bill of Clemmons, NC; and five grandchildren, Laurie Cavendish and husband Brandon, Rebecca Copeland, Kristen Jones, Bradley Jones, and Michael Jones. She is also survived by her sister, Libby Pierce Etheridge, of Chesapeake, VA; and two brothers, Wayland Riddick Jones, Jr. and wife Ellen, and Billy Joe Jones and wife Beth of Colerain, NC; sister-in-law, Marion Petrie Parker of Woodruff, SC; and cousin, Jo White Cobb of Smithfield, VA. Barbara was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church in Clemmons, NC.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband, playing Rummikub with friends, gardening, sewing and reading.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, December 26, 2106, at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, NC.

A Celebration of Life service at Center Grove Baptist Church will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Shirley Osborne (April 17, 1947 – Dec. 20, 2016)

bigosborne-12Shirley Carole Osborne, 69, of Old US 421, Sugar Grove, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday December 20, 2016, at home.

Born April 17, 1947 in Boone, NC, she was a daughter of the late Narvie and late Cecile Rominger. Shirley attended Willowdale Baptist Church since returning to Boone in 2012, and was a long-time member of Grace World Outreach Church in Brooksville, FL, where she was a Sunday School teacher and Co-leader of the widows group Naomis Place for many years. She attended Appalachian State University where she studied Business Administration, and was the Co-owner and Vice President of John Osborne Surveying, Inc. in Brooksville, FL before retiring in 2009.

Shirley is survived by her children, Scott Osborne and wife, Tina, of Spring Hill, FL, Tammy Sanner and husband, Rod, of Palm Coast, FL; five granddaughters, Heather Swansinger, Ashley Morley and husband,, Alex, Kirsty Osborne, Jessica Sanner and Brittany Sanner; four great-grandchildren; her brothers and sisters, Frank Guy of Sugar Grove, Peggy Rominger of Vilas, Evelyn Greene and husband, Bob, of Boone, Harold Rominger of Midland, Kenneth Rominger and wife, Barbara, of Charlotte, Ricky Rominger of Sugar Grove, Patricia Ward and husband, James, of Mocksville, and Deborah Rominger of Granite Falls; her brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Richard Osborne and wife, Liz, of Orange City, FL, Lori Gilbert and husband, Bill, of Old Town, FL, and Janie Hunter, of Lakeland, FL; her aunts Billy Rae Lawrence of Mount Orab, OH, and Kathryn Stephens of Old Town, FL; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband John, her brother Johnny Rominger, her sister-in-law Shirley Guy, her brothers-in-law Steven Freddie Osborne and Charles Sonny Osborne, Jr., and her nephews Joseph Rominger and Kelly Osborne.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 23, at Willowdale Baptist Church in Vilas, NC, with visitation beginning at noon, and services beginning at 1pm.
