Mr. Lyle Wilson (Nov. 14, 1934 – Dec. 21, 2015)
First Sergeant William Lyle Wilson, 81, of Todd passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 21, 2015. Mr. Wilson was born Nov. 14, 1934, in Huntington, West Virginia, the son of Mr. And Mrs. V. R. Wilson.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his bride of 60 years, Joyce, daughters Sandy (Wayne) Hicks, Todd, NC, and Susan (Shannon) Reese, Lenoir, NC, grandchildren, Will (Cassandra) Hicks, Ben Hicks of Todd, NC, Justin (Holli) Reese, USN< Port Orchard, WA, Sarah Reese and Zachary Reese of Lenoir, NC great grandchildren, Kailey Jones, Kason Hicks. Hayden, Lucas, Avery and Jackson Reese. Mr. Wilson is also survived by his older brother, Vern (Dori) Wilson of Houston, TX. In addition he is survived by his faithful fur baby Katie. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Jack L. Wilson.
Mr. Wilson retired from the US Army in 1974 after serving his country for 22 years. Upon retirement from the Army, Mr. Wilson worked for the US Postal Service in Boone from 1974 until his retirement as Postmaster in Deep Gap in 1994.

Funeral services for First Sergeant Retired William Lyle Wilson will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 oclock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Elaine Hall. Burial with military honors will follow in the Bethelview United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 12:30 until 2 oclock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Walter K. Ingram (Dec. 19, 1949 – Dec. 19, 2015)
Walter Kelley Ingram, 66, of Boone, N.C. passed away December 19, 2015. He was born on December 19, 1949 at Marshall Texas, and grew up in Longview, Texas. Kelley was an architect until his retirement from Appalachian State University. Earlier in his career Kelley filled a similar position at the University of Texas at Arlington. He was a 1972 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and remained a lifelong supporter of his beloved Longhorns.
Kelley is survived by wife Margo, sisters Becky Morris of Texas, Sue Rushing of Alabama, two nieces, Keri Como of Tennessee and Rochelle Carlton of Texas, and one nephew Jay Bridges of Texas. Kelley is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and members of the extended family.
Kelly enjoyed gourmet cooking and watercolor painting.
No service is scheduled at this time but a Celebration of Life will be held in Texas after the first of the year.

Raymond Scott Porter, Jr. (Feb. 27, 1936 – Dec. 17, 2015)
Raymond Scott Porter, Jr., 79, of Valley Street, Kannapolis, and formerly of Blowing Rock, passed away Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015 at his home.
Born February 27, 1936 in Miami, FL, he was a son of Raymond Porter Sr. and Margaret Page Porter. After serving a tour in the US Air Force, Mr. Porter moved to Blowing Rock to establish and operate the Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in Boone.
He is survived by his daughters, Dolly Brookins and husband Chuck, of Spring Hill, FL, Gail Wickett and husband Randy, of Greensboro, Cindy Hedgepath and husband Dan, of Lake Lure, and sons, David Depompa and wife, Debbie of Huntersville and Danny Porter of Morganton; grandchildren, Kelly Depompa of Charlotte, Andrew Depompa of Raleigh, Patrick and Brittney Porter, both of Kannapolis, Ryan Wickett of TX, Sarah Wickett of Greensboro, Raymond Spicer of GA and Charlie Brookins of FL; his sister, Margaret Ajac and husband James, of Raleigh; nephew, Scott Ajac, nieces, Pamela Freeman and husband, Philip and Kim Hammerstein; and great-nieces, Audrey and Sophie Hammerstein; and special family friends, Lonnie and Michele Holbrook and Emalie and Sawyer Holbrook, all of Kannapolis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Della Jeanette Porter; daughter, Cathy Depompa Kelly; and his parents.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 21, at 2 PM at Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Doug Pierce, Sr. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 oclock, prior to services. Military graveside honors provided by the American Legion Post 130 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

Michael Randall Townsend (Aug. 26, 1958 – Dec. 17, 2015)
Michael Randall Townsend, age 59, of Grandview Heights, Boone, passed away Thursday, December 17, 2015 at home. Born August 26, 1956 in Avery County, he was a son of Ellen Moore Townsend and the late Robert Stephen Townsend. Michael was a house painter.
He is survived by his mother, Ellen Moore Townsend; two brothers, Charlie Townsend and wife, Joanna of Gastonia and Danny Townsend of Blowing Rock; sister-in-law, Sabra Townsend of Boone; niece, Ellen Shook and husband, Glenn of Deep Gap; nephew, Eddie Townsend and wife Amy, of Deep Gap; great-niece, Hayla Shook and great-nephews, Hunter Shook and Brahm Townsend.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Bobby Townsend.

David R. Yates (July 04, 1937 – Dec. 16, 2015)
David Robert Bobby Yates died peacefully on Wednesday, December 16, 2015. He was 78.
Bobby was born in Watauga County and raised in Valle Crucis, North Carolina. After attending Cove Creek High School, he attended North Carolina State University, and then served honorably as a jet mechanic in the United States Air Force, stationed in Albany, Georgia.
After his service in the Air Force, he worked in manufacturing in Apex, North Carolina for over ten year before returning to Valle Crucis in 1973. Bobby and his wife Hattie raised two sons in Valle Crucis. He helped form and served as Scoutmaster of Valle Crucis Boy Scout Troop 160 for over thirty years. He received the District Award of Merit numerous times, the District Distinguished Service Award, and was named Scoutmaster of the Year. He was an avid hiker, camper and fisherman.
Bobby is survived by his wife, Hattie Wilson Yates; his son David W. Yates and wife Roberta; his grandchildren Samuel and Jillian Yates; his sister Nancy Yates Danner and husband Tommy; his niece Terry Michael and husband Mark; his niece Debbie Matheson and husband Dale, and several great nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his son Jerry E.Yates.
The funeral and internment will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 19, 2015 at Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Highway 194, Valle Crucis, NC. There will be a reception for friends and family at Skiles Hall, adjacent to the Church following the burial.

James Roscoe Hartley (April 27, 1942 – Dec. 16, 2015)
James Roscoe Hartley, 73 from Boone, known by friends and family as Jim, passed away peacefully at the Blowing Rock Rehabilitation Center on Dec. 16, 2015 while surrounded by family.
He was born in Watauga County and grew up in Boone and Key West, Florida. Jim was an outdoorsman, who enjoyed spending time with his family sailing, skiing, and fishing. He was a lover of the nature and history of the North Carolina Mountains. He greatly enjoyed getting to know people and sharing stories with friends.
Jim graduated from Appalachian High School and attended Broward Junior College and Lees McRae College. He served in the Military at Fort Sill, OK, and Fort Jackson, SC and was an active member of the National Guard Reserves who received awards for excellent marksmanship. His professional career spanned over 50 years. He was a land developer and a self-employed surveyor in Boone who enthusiastically mapped hundreds of land deeds in the region and in several states.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe Hartley and Ruby Whitesides Hartley.
Jim is survived by his wife of 47 years, Iva Wilson Hartley; one daughter, Heather Hartley and her husband, Phil Reynolds; one son, Eric Hartley and his wife, Lynette Brown Hartley; one brother, Gary Hartley; one sister, Elaine Jolly, and one nephew, Scott Ferwerda. In addition he is survived by two grandchildren, Ethan Hartley and Eli Hartley, and one step-grandson, Sam Reynolds.
A celebration of the life of Jim Hartley will be held at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home, 194 Queen Street, Boone, N.C. on Sunday, Dec. 20th, 2015. The family will begin receiving friends at 12:30pm with a service at 2:00pm. The service will be followed by a burial at Mount Lawn Cemetery.

Paul Leslie Goodwin, Jr. found his ultimate healing and rest in the arms of Jesus on December 16, 2015 after a 10 month struggle with the cardiac complications associated with Marfan Syndrome (www.marfan.org).
Leslie (Les, Lester, Lesman) was a beloved son, brother, grandson, Unk, soulmate, nephew, and friend who will be mourned and missed by many.

Mr. Curlee Joyce (April 01, 1935 – Dec. 15, 2015)
Curlee Joyce passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on December 15, 2015. He was born in Stokes County and grew up in the Sandy Ridge Community. Curlee was the son of John R. Joyce and Ellie Shaffer Joyce.
Curlees first love was his family. He was a member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church and experienced God most fully in creation, especially in Astronomy. He lived a life as a ministry service to his community.
Curlee received his B.S. Degree in Business Education from Appalachian State University (formerly ASTC) and his Masters Degree in Social Work from the School of Social Work of The College of William and Mary. His professional service was first as caseworker and then Director of Stokes County Department Social Services (his home county.) He was Director of Caldwell County Department of Social Services, Director of Florence Crittenton Home in Charlotte, Supervisor of Adoptions at Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services, and Director of Watauga County Department of Social Services from which he retired in 1997 after 25 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and brother-in-law Hilda Joyce Priddy and Hanes Priddy, a brother Otha Joyce, and a brother who died in early infancy. Curlee is survived by his wife of 58 years, Denica Wheeler Joyce, one son Robert C. Joyce (Karen) and one daughter Elizabeth Joyce Dawkins (Jeffrey), two brothers Carlton Joyce (Elsie) and John R. Joyce (Marjorie), one sister Rebecca J. Lawson (Ray), and one sister-in-law Betty W. Joyce. In addition he is survived by ten grandchildren, Ashley Joyce Jones (Adam), Kari Joyce Brown (Daniel), Heather Dawkins Saunders (Jonathan), Katherine M. Dawkins, Erika J. Dawkins, Kristen B. Dawkins, Joshua L. Dawkins, Nickie W. Hayes (Scott), Bryon S. Proffit (Blair), and Amanda P. Haderthauer (Kristian). He has been blessed with ten great-grandchildren: Daniel, Brayden, Kaleigh, Morgen, Kelsey, Ethan, Isaiah, Landry, Sawyer, and Skylar as well as many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of the Life and Ministry of Curlee Joyce will be at St. Lukes Episcopal Church, 170 Councill Street, Boone, NC on Sunday, December 20th, at 2:00 p.m. followed by the interment of cremains in the memorial garden and reception at the church.

George M. Howk (April 12, 1948 – Dec. 15, 2015)
A funeral service for George Myron Howk, 67, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 19, 2015, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo. Family will receive friends 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm prior to the service. A graveside service under the care of Austin & Barnes Funeral Home will be conducted Monday, December 21,2015, at 11 a.m. in Woodlawn Cemetery, Blowing Rock.
Mr. Howk died Tuesday, December 15, 2015. Born in Whitehall, NY, he was the son of the late Myron Howk and Joyce Jones Stannard. After graduating from the University of South Carolina with a major in English History, Mr. Howk was a Program Manager for the SC Department of Health and Human Services. He was well known for being open minded and enthusiastic about any pursuit and encouraged people to try and explore new things. He was always interested in politics and current affairs. He loved golf, played the guitar, loved nature and hiking in the mountains. Mr. Howk was a member of Grace Point Presbyterian Church and associate member of Arbor Dale Presbyterian Church in Banner Elk, NC.
Surviving are his wife, Mary N. Howk; daughter, Megan Howk and Jamie Marler (Hank) of Glens Falls, NY; grandchildren, Tristan, Hayden and Makenna; sister, Vicky Stannard of Fair Haven, VT; and brother, Mark Stannard of Granville, NY.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Matthew Kyle Howk and sister, Joyce Ann Carpenter.
