Nathan N. Bryan
(October 07, 1957 – August 14, 2018)
Nathan Nathaniel Bryan, age 61, of Howards Creek Road, Boone, passed away Tuesday evening, August 14, 2018 at Watauga Medical Center.
Born October 7, 1957 in Avery County, he was a son of Frank John and Florence Ivy Anderson Bryan. Nathan was employed as a truck driver for GDS. He loved his family and always enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Nathan was a simple mountain man who loved the outdoors, hunting all types of game and fishing the ocean, lakes and rivers. 
He is survived by his daughters, Cynthia and Amanda, and son, J.D., all of Boone; eleven grandchildren; and brothers, Louis Bryan of Virginia and Lee Bryan of Mountain City. A number of nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Earlene Ward Bryan.
Services for Nathan will be private.

Martha P. Hawley
(December 15, 1948 – August 14, 2018)
Martha Hawley passed to her Heavenly home on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Watauga Medical Center. Born December 15, 1948 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Ruby Carlton Phillips. Martha was preceded in death by a brother, Silas Allen Phillips and a sister, Christine Lewis. 
She is survived by a daughter, Heather Hawley, two sisters, Linda Mast and Mary McGuire, one brother, Johnny Phillips and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.

James L. Norris
(November 25, 1946 – August 15, 2018)
Mr. James Leander Jimmy Norris, age 71 of Zionville, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2018. He was a native of Watauga County and the son of the late Grant Leander and Ellen Faye Houck Norris. He was a member of Unity Baptist Church, and was an accomplished piano player, playing music in this church. Jimmy was a retired Operating Room Technician, practicing in both the old Johnson County Hospital and at Watauga Medical Center. He was a caregiver at heart.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Norris.
He is survived by a brother, Gary Norris and wife Marisa of Lexington, N.C., three sisters, Joyce Colvard of Clemmons, Geneva Norris and Edsel of Zionville, and Cindy Eller and Jim also of Zionville.
Graveside services for Jimmy Norris will be conducted Friday, August 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Norris Tabernacle Baptist Church Cemetery, officiating will be his brother, Gary Norris.

Nellie M. Redmond
(August 31, 1928 – August 15, 2018)
Mrs. Nellie Mae (Nell) Matheson Redmond, age 89, of Boone, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at the Foley Center. Born August 31, 1928 in Neva Tennessee, she was a daughter of Ross Hobert and Anna Ruth Stout Matheson. Nell along with her late husband owned and operated the Appalachian Soda Shop from 1950 until 1991. Nell enjoyed her flower garden, and was a member of the Advent Christian Church. 
She is survived by her son, Tom (Tommy) Redmond, Jr., and wife Morgan, one granddaughter, China Evangeline Redmond, all of Boone, nieces, Nancy Dee Penick, Brenda Matheson Howard & husband Johnny, Joanne Matheson, Cindy Matheson Strimel, Linda Matheson Greer and husband Keith, Dorothy Matheson, Bobbie Matheson Chappell and husband Frankie and Joyce Matheson, nephews, Dick Lavender and wife Martha, Billy Scott Matheson and wife Mindy, Hight Redmond and wife Janice, Gary Matheson and wife Sandra and Terry Matheson, one sister in law, Louise Matheson.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Tom B. Redmond, Sr., four brothers, Lester, Hugh, Paul and Bill Matheson, two special sisters in law, China Lavender and Dee Winkler, and three nephews, Larry, Jerry and Michael Matheson.
Funeral services for Nell Redmond will be conducted Friday evening, August 17, 2018 at the Boone Advent Christian Church at 7 PM. Officiating will be Rev. Mitch Marlowe and Rev. Gordon Noble. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 4 pm until 7 pm at the Advent Christian Church. Parking will be available at the First Baptist Church.
Graveside services and burial will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 am at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

Linda Price Woodard, age 72, of Sugar Grove passed away Monday, August 13, 2018 at Watauga Medical Center.
Mrs. Woodard is survived by her husband, Glenn Woodard of Trade, Tennessee, one son, Matt Woodard and wife Jennifer of Boone, one daughter, Amanda Arnette and husband George of Sugar Grove, grandchildren, Oliver, Isaac and Eli Woodard of Boone and Sarah, Hannah and Morgan Arnette of Sugar Grove, one great-grandchild, George Winston Arnette of Sugar Grove, three sisters, Elaine Carden, Shirley Church of Mountain City, Tennessee and Phyllis Reece of Trade, Tennessee and one brother Jack Price of Creston, North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Daniel and Eula Cornette Price, four brothers, Robert, Andy, Junior and George Price, four sisters, Corine Price, Janice Price, Josaphine Osborne and Velma Price, one nephew, Robin Price and one niece Marla Grindstaff Abel.

Peggy Sue South
August 23, 1960 – August 13, 2018
Peggy Sue South, age 57, of Boone passed away, August 13, 2018 at her residence.
She is survived by , her husband, Howard South of Boone, her daughter, Andrea Carlson and Bobby Trivette of Boone, three sons, Brittian South of Mountain City, Tennessee, Richard South and Roy Wilson both of Boone, two sisters, Nancy South and husband David and Laura South and husband Randy all of Boone, two brothers, Rusty Stout of Troy Pennsylvania and Billy Stout of Elmira, New York, two granddaughters, Anna Trivette and Sophia Wilson both of Boone and two grandsons, Nathanial Trivette and Michael South both of Boone. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Russell Frank Stout, Sr. and Pearl Velma Robinson Stout and one sister, Cory Stout.
The family will receive friends Thursday, August 16, 2018 from 4 until 5 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel.

Carol Ammons Vance
August 21, 1933 – August 14, 2018
Mrs. Carol Ammons Vance, age 84, of Blowing Rock, wife of Dr. Thomas D. Vance passed away Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Watauga Medical Center.
Carol was a graduate of the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and was, at the time, the youngest Head Nurse at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She was fiercely loyal and protective of her family and friends, and her loving and nurturing personality extended to all that met her. Her love for children manifested itself the most with her five grandchildren. She made childhood literacy a priority in her post-nursing life and received an award from North Carolina Governor James Hunt for her volunteer work with Laotian refugees. Carol also enjoyed sharing her love for nature with her children and grandchildren, and was an avid reader.
Carol is survived by two daughters, Susan Johnson and husband Milan of Kenly, North Carolina, and Karen Richon and husband Joel of Highland, Maryland; two sons, Ken Vance and wife Laura of Clemmons, North Carolina, and Matt Vance and wife Maggie of Jacksonville, Florida; four granddaughters, Elizabeth Vance of Winston-Salem, Stephanie Johnson of Raleigh, Sarah Vance of Clemmons, and Ella Vance of Jacksonville; one grandson, Thomas Vance of Jacksonville; one sister, Barbara Brennan of Winston-Salem, and one brother-in-law, Harvey Burniston, Sr. of Johnson City, Tennessee. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, James Carter Ammons and Mildred Heller Ammons, and two sisters, Carter Ammons Burniston and Elinor Ammons Workman.
Funeral services for Mrs. Carol Ammons Vance will be conducted Saturday afternoon, August 18, 2018, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be The Reverend Dr. Ralph Heller. Entombment will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Gregory Bolvi
September 07, 1948 – August 15, 2018
Gregory Bolvi, age 69, of Angelia Court, Boone, passed away Wednesday morning, August 15, 2018.
Gregory is survived by his wife, Mary Sansom Bolvi of the home; his son, Ethan Bolvi and wife Hannah of Boone, and two granddaughters, Lily Grace and Violet Glory Bolvi, both of Boone.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Rachel McGhee; his father and mother, Wayne and Emma Lou Foster Bolvi, and one sister, Shawn Bolvi-Singleton.
Memorial services for Gregory Bolvi will be conducted Saturday afternoon, August 18, 2018, at 3:00 o’clock, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Loyd H. Hilton
April 15, 1927 – August 17, 2018
Dr. Loyd H. Hilton, professor emeritus of English at Appalachian State University, who had a distinguished twenty-four-year career as chairperson of its English Department, died in Blowing Rock, North Carolina on Friday, August 17, 2018.
Loyd Harold Hilton, youngest of three sons of Joseph Wheeler and Ethel Loyd Hilton, was born April 15, 1927, in Afton, TX. 
Dr. Hilton graduated with the B.A. in English from Wayland College in 1953. In 1957, he received the M.A. in English from Texas Technological University, and the Ph.D in 1961 from the University of Texas at Austin. He taught at Wayland College from 1957-59 and 1961-64 and at Stetson University from 1964-69.
Dr. Hilton joined the English Department at Appalachian State University in 1969 and served as its chairperson for the next twenty-four years. His tenure as chairperson was notable for his gathering an outstanding faculty and his fair and encouraging treatment of students and colleagues. The English Department’s award for outstanding graduate is named for him. Dr. Hilton served two terms as Appalachian’s delegate to the University of North Carolina Faculty Assembly and was a member of Appalachian’s graduate faculty. He was a strong supporter of the Appalachian Journal, the University’s flagship regional studies review, and served on its advisory board from 1972-1992. He was appointed Professor Emeritus of English in 1992.
Dr. Hilton is survived by his wife, Susan Wilson Hilton of Blowing Rock, his son, Dr. James Hilton, and his wife, Molly, of Dexter, MI, and their children, Michael and Meghan; and his daughter, Katherine, and her husband, Seth Jason, of Edgewater, MD.
A memorial service for Dr. Hilton will be held a Friday, August 24, 2018 at 2:00 o’clock at St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church in Blowing Rock. The Reverend Karla Woggon will offciate.
The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Kay Collins Sudderth
March 9, 1945 – August 12, 2018
After a life of service to God, family, and community, Kay Collins Sudderth of Kernersville was called home on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2018.
Kay was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Kernersville, where she was the organist and secretary. This continued a practice of worship and service she established in her family’s church, Newland Presbyterian Church of Newland, NC.
She was born in Monroe County on March 9, 1945, to Howard and Mabel Hughes Collins. She earned her bachelor’s and master of business education degrees from Appalachian State University and taught in Avery County Public Schools. She married William Hugh “Rusty” Sudderth, Jr. on August 4, 1968; the couple proudly celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this month.
Surviving are her husband, Rusty; son William Hugh “Chip” Sudderth III, wife Shannon, and grandson Will; and son Charles Collins “Chuck” Sudderth and wife Hsuan-yi Cheng.
The family will receive friends at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Service, 213 W. Mountain St., Kernersville, NC 27284, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14. A service of witness to the resurrection will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 611 Oakhurst St., Kernersville, NC 27284, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15. A graveside service will be held in the Hughes Cemetery on Squirrel Creek in Newland at 3 p.m. the same day.

Mike Hayes, age 58, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville, NC.
He was born on March 22, 1960 in Crossnore, North Carolina, a son of the late Jack Hayes and Mary Sue Brown Hayes.
He was preceded in death by his Parents.
Mike was former Chief of Elk Park Volunteer Fire Department, where he was awarded Fireman of the Year Award. He was a member of Heaton Christian Church. He enjoyed Farming, Fishing, Trips to the Beach and his Two Grandchildren. He enjoyed Soft Rock music and his favorite colors were Blue and Red.
