Ann Gainey Cappell 
(September 25, 1922 – March 26, 2018) 

    Ann Elizabeth Gainey Cappell, 95, of Oakley Green, Boone, NC passed away Monday morning, March 26, 2018 at her home. Ann was born September 25, 1922 in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Walker A. and Ruth Cecilia Gainey. She retired as a secretary from St. Petersburg Junior College in St. Petersburg, Florida. She loved to knit and watch the Atlanta Braves and Carolina Panthers. 
    
    Mrs. Cappell is survived and dearly loved by her son, John David Cappell of the home and their cat Sandy; and son-in-law, Danny Townsend of Blowing Rock. She is preceded in death by her brother, David Gainey and her daughter, Judith Townsend. 
    
    A celebration of life ceremony for Ann Cappell will be held at a later date.

Mr. Gerald R. Fuller 
(August 19, 1942 – March 28, 2018) 

    Mr. Gerald Robert Jerry Fuller, age 75, of Vilas, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at Watauga Medical Center. Born August 19, 1942 in Burlington, Vermont. Jerry worked as a marketer for a number of newspapers, including, the Charlotte Observer, Chicago Tribune and the Sun Sentinel. Jerry and his wife Kay were realtors in the Boone area for a number of years.
    He is survived by his wife, Kay Fuller, three sons, Lance Fuller and wife Terrie, John Fuller and Bryan Fuller, one daughter, Aleema Fuller, two grandchildren, Yasmine and Alexander Fuller, and two brothers, Leon Fuller and Mike Fuller. 
    Memorial services for Mr. Jerry Fuller will be conducted Tuesday morning, April 3, 2018 at 10 AM at the First Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be Rev. Jeff Smith. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 130, 135 Bear Trail, Boone, NC 28607.

Illa Jean Greene 
(November 11, 1953 – April 2, 2018) 

    Illa Jean Brown Greene, 64, of Flowers Branch Road, Deep Gap, passed away April 2, 2018 at her home. Born November 11, 1953 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Kenneth and Beatrice Beach Brown. Illa was a member of Highland View Baptist Church and for many years owned and operated the Kut & Kurl Beauty Salon in Deep Gap. Always a humble lady, Illa adored the Lord, cherished her family, had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren, and loved everyone whose paths she crossed. 
    She is survived by her husband, Jeff Greene; daughter, Jessica Greene Johnson and husband, Casey, of Lenoir; son, Steven Greene and wife, April, of Sugar Grove; grandchildren, Holden and Gabrielle Johnson, Jeffery Steven Greene III, and Landon and Sarah Greene; sisters, Wanda Winkler and husband, Dale, of Vilas, and Margie Jackson and husband, Jerry, of Mill Springs; brothers, David Brown and fiancé, Yvonne, of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and Michael Brown and wife, Tonya, of Boone; and her mother-in-law, Inez Waters Greene of Deep Gap. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Brown Culler. 
    Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, April 4, at 2 oclock at Highland View Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Shane Golds and Rev. Herbert Parunak. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 oclock, prior to services, at the church. Burial will follow in the Highland View Baptist Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Medi Home Health & Hospice, 400 Shadowline Dr., Suite 102, Boone, NC 28607, or to Highland View Baptist Church, in care of Tim Greene, 1372 Linville Creek Rd., Vilas, NC 28692.

Kermit “Jack” Brown

May 06, 1935 – March 28, 2018

Kermit “Jack” Brown, age 82, of Silverstone Road, Zionville, passed away Wednesday evening, March 28, 2018, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir.

Jack was born May 6, 1935 in Watauga County, a son of the late Harve and Emma Winebarger Brown. He was a retired employee of the North Carolina Department of Transportation Bridge Crew Division, and a member of Zionville Baptist Church.

Jack is survived by his wife, Della Culler Brown of the home; one son, Randy Brown of Trade, Tennessee; one daughter, Kelia Caudill and husband Wayne of Zionville; one grandson, Russell Brown of Trade; two granddaughters, Kristie Caudill and fiance Jacob Eller of Zionville, and Kelsie Mease and husband Vaughn of Hickory, and one great-granddaughter, Raynzlie Mae Eller of Zionville. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Wade, and Fred “Ted” Brown, and three sisters, Maude Reece, Faye Miller, and Liz Brown.

Funeral services for Kermit “Jack” Brown will be conducted Monday afternoon, April 2, 2018, at 2:00 o’clock, at Zionville Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Dwayne Tester and Reverend Derick Wilson. Burial will follow in Zionville Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Joseph Glenn Henson

May 11, 1939 – March 30, 2018

Joseph Glenn Henson, age 78, of Vilas, passed away peacefully March 30, 2018, at his residence at the Foley Center at Chestnut Ridge in Blowing Rock.

He was born May 11, 1939 in Boone, a son of the late Ford and Thelma Henson. He married the love of his life, Martha Jean Lewis. He was an entrepreneur and dealt in real estate, antiques, other miscellaneous things. He enjoyed traveling, sports, and spending time with his family.

Glenn is survived by his two daughters, Lisa Silber and Deborah Lynn Lemieux, and one brother, Edwyn Gayle Henson and wife Linda. He is also survived by four adoring grandchildren, Justin and Devon Silber and Brendan and Claudia Lemieux.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Jean Lewis Henson, one brother, Charles Henson, and one sister, Martha Jean Richardson.

Funeral services for Joseph Glenn Henson will be conducted Monday morning, April 2, 2018, at 11:00 o’clock, Henson Chapel United Methodist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Cindy K. Lunsford. Burial will follow in Henson Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

January 17, 1930 – March 31, 2018

Richard DeMott, age 88, of Alpine Drive, Seven Devils, passed away Saturday evening, March 31, 2018, at Glenbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation in Boone.

Eileen McKinney Biggerstaff

March 13, 1929 – March 31, 2018
Eileen McKinney Biggerstaff, age 89, of Boone, passed away Saturday evening, March 31, 2018, at her home.

Eileen is survived by two daughters, Jeannie Caviness and husband Lawrence of Boone, and Janice Dunlap and husband Eddie of Albermarle; one son, Joe Biggerstaff and wife Kim of Hendersonville; eight grandchildren, Seth Caviness and wife Carrie, Laura Caviness Petche and husband Michael, Ben Caviness, Daniel Dunlap, Gabriel Dunlap, Nathaniel Dunlap and wife Joanna, Eric Biggerstaff, and Kate Biggerstaff; four great-grandchildren, Hank, Jon, and Lee Caviness and Adaline Dunlap; one sister, Joyce Beauchamp of Bakersville, and two brothers, Royce McKinney and wife Susan of Houston, Texas, and Ron McKinney and wife Libby of Bakersville. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack E. Biggerstaff; one son, Jonny Biggerstaff; one great-grandson, Ty Caviness, and her father and mother, Isom Hayes McKinney and Jean Bowman McKinney.

Graveside services and burial will be conducted Monday afternoon, April 2, 2018, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hunter Cemetery in Burnsville. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday morning, April 14, 2018, at 11:00 o’clock, at Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church in Burnsville.

Greg A VanPelt

February 18, 1956 – March 28, 2018

Greg VanPelt, age 62, of Linville, North Carolina passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at his home. 
He was born on February 18, 1956 in York County, Pennsylvania, a son of James P. VanPelt and Naomi Ruppert VanPelt-Carl.
In this life the thing that Greg enjoyed the most was spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents
Greg leaves behind to cherish his memory his: Wife of 42 years, Alva Ruhland VanPelt of Linville, NC; Daughters: Laura VanPelt (Josh Clark) of Crossnore, NC., Danielle Howard ( Ben Aycock) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL., Lydia VanPelt of Linville, NC., Amanda (Joe) Welliver of Wilmington, NC.
Grandchildren: Brooklynn Howard and Henry Welliver “Hank”
Siblings: James VanPelt II, Cynthia Coffey, Darrell VanPelt, Ruth Moran, Andrew VanPelt and Steve VanPelt
Services for Greg VanPelt will be held on, March 31, 2018 beginning at 11:00AM from the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Greene officiating.

Harlan “Buddy” Paul Buchanan
November 13, 1933 – March 29, 2018

Harlan Paul “Buddy” Buchanan Jr, 83, of Minneapolis passed away on Thursday March 29, 2018 at Cannon Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late Harlan and Georgie Buchanan. Buddy was a member of the Minneapolis Methodist Church. 
Buddy leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Louise Buchanan; his daughter, Joann Ward of Minneapolis, NC; granddaughters Beth Wright and her husband Eric of Pyatte, NC, Lindsey Harris and her husband Allen of North Myrtle Beach, SC; great granddaughters Carson Wright and Hannah Pertko, great grandsons Justin Wright and Gage Harris; sisters Joyce Buchanan and Gloria Pittman and several nieces and nephews. 
A graveside service to honor Buddy’s life will be held at 2pm on Friday March 30, 2018 at the Minneapolis Cemetery.
