Oh, the wind and rain. The past few hours of weather has been intense in Watauga County and beyond. Tornado warnings and watches are in effect for the High Country and the rain has been nearly non-stop.

The Boone Mall, of course, is flooded. The current in the Boone Mall has moved at least one unattended vehicle, as shown in the video above. Videos of buildings on the Appalachian State campus and roadways in Boone flooding are circulating on social media. Watauga Democrat reported that rescues from apartments along Boone Docks Drive were ongoing as of 5:30 p.m. See Blue Ridge Energy outages here.

A National Weather Service flash flood watch and warning is in effect until about 9 p.m. for Watauga County. The watch noted that 1 to 2 inches of rain had already fallen early afternoon on Monday and another 2 to 3 inches was expected to fall by 8 p.m.

The NWS warning at about 5 p.m. noted that heavy rain was continuing to fall.

“In some locations such as around Foscoe and Blowing Rock, as much as six inches of rain has fallen. Reports are starting to come in across the county of mudslides, road closures and many trees down due to wet ground and gusty winds. An additional inch or so of rain is still possible before the rain finally tapers off around 6pm EDT,” according to the flood warning.
