Veterans Day Events Held in the High Country on Friday and Saturday

Veterans’ Day is on the horizon. App State is hosting a Veterans Day ceremony on Friday, while most of the other Veterans Day events are being on Saturday. The DBDA is hosting a fundraiser for the Watauga County Veterans Memorial project from Nov. 9-11. For more details on all of the events, scroll down.

App State Veterans Day Ceremony Friday

At 9 a.m. on Friday, Appalachian State will host a Veterans Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial, which is located next to B.B. Dougherty Administration Building. Chancellor Sheri Everts and Col. Bo Clayton (Class of ’88). Following the ceremony, a reception will be held in the admin building’s lobby. If adverse weather arrives, the ceremony will be held in lobby, too.

About Col. Bo Clayton

Colonel Ralph L. (Bo) Clayton III is the Commander, 733d Mission Support Group, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, VA. He leads 615 personnel in two squadrons and one division who provide wartime and peacetime mission support and quality of life for the 633d Air Base Wing, Headquarters United States Army Training and Doctrine Command, four United States Army brigades, Headquarters Joint Task Force Civil Support, and numerous other associate units and mission partners. Colonel Clayton provides deployment operations, construction, security, facility maintenance, supply and transportation for a base community totaling over 7,780 acres and hosting 23,000 active duty, Guard and Reserve, Department of Defense civilians, and retired personnel.

Colonel Clayton assumed his duties on June 28, 2016. He entered active duty in the US Army Field Artillery Corps in 1989. In 1999 he entered Special Operations as a Psychological Operations officer and has since supported or deployed in support of every major contingency operation.

Colonel Clayton received a bachelor of science in biology from Appalachian State University in 1988.

Veterans’ Day Ceremony at Boone Mall Saturday, Nov. 11

The High Country Chapter of Military Officers Association of America is co-sponsoring the 11th annual Veterans’ Day Ceremony at the Boone Mall on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 10:30 a.m. Each year about 400 people attend the ceremony, including many who served in the military dating back to World War II.

Other sponsors include the Boone Mall and the Watauga Community Band. The latter will play a medley of patriotic music to kick off the ceremony at 10:30 a.m., and the program will officially begin at 11 a.m.

The Watauga High School Marine Corps JROTC will post the colors and that will be followed the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem and a special program honoring military veterans.

“The event is an opportunity to honor our veterans for what they have done for this great nation in protecting our freedoms and to recognize the families of our uniformed personnel who have also sacrificed over the years,” HCCMOAA President Fred Schmitt said.

The HCCMOAA is still raising proceeds for the Watauga County Veterans Memorial, which is going to built in downtown Boone next summer. Local sculptor Suzie Hallier is designing and building the project. For more info on the plans, click here.

Avery County Rotary Veteran’s Day Luncheon Saturday

Avery County Rotary will host the third annual annual Veteran’s Day Luncheon at the Chapman Center in Linville on Saturday, Nov. 11 from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. The lunch is free for veterans and their family and $7 per person for other guests. RSVP to Jillian Rosato by Nov. 3 or rosatoj@lmc.edu.

Veterans Day Ceremony in Blowing Rock

Every year, the American Legion Post 256 honors veterans with a ceremony at the Rotary Gazebo in Memorial Park in downtown Blowing Rock on Veterans Day at 11 a.m. If inclement weather arrives, the ceremony will take place inside the American Legion building.

DBDA Partner W/ HCCMOAA To Raise Funds for Memorial Nov. 9-11

The DBDA has partnered with the High Country chapter of the Military Officers Assocation of America (MOAA) to support their efforts to raise money for the first Veterans memorial to be erected in Watauga County. You can participate by donating a portion of your proceeds on Nov. 9-11.

A representative from the MOAA will be visiting your business on Friday, Nov. 3 to answer any questions you might have about the program, the memorial, or how to make your donation. They will also provide a flyer for your window to show that you are participating in the project. The Chamber of Commerce is also promoting the fundraiser, and the Alumni Association at ASU is also including a blurb about the fundraiser in their newsletter going out prior to the Georgia

Southern Game. The theme for the Georgia Southern game is “Hero’s Day”, and veterans will be recognized during the game.

Tanger Outlets in Blowing Rock Honors Veterans Saturday

WHAT: Tanger Outlets Blowing Rock will be hosting an event to celebrate area Veterans and their dedication and sacrifice on behalf of the United States on Saturday, November 11. Tanger Outlets Blowing Rock is partnering with Watauga Co. Veteran Services to honor Barry Adams for his service with a special Hero Care Package, which will include a $250 Tanger Gift Card and items from our stores. Tanger Outlets Blowing Rock will also unveil a special mural created to honor Veterans in our community.

At 11:11 AM, Tanger Outlets Blowing Rock will hold a moment of silence, in recognition of the service of Veterans nationwide and around the world.
