Nov. 17, 2014. On the other side of the Appalachian mountains, so many people moved to Cincinnati, that the city had a “Little Appalachia” neighborhood.  Fiddlers, traveling blues musicians, and others from the Ohio River Valley brought their music to the city, and it bustled with musical traditions.  The Tillers are the modern day bearers of the southern Ohio urban old-time string band tradition, and since releasing their debut album in 2008, they have been catching the ears of fans across the country.

“The Tillers opened up for Doc Watson in Todd several years ago, and I first heard about them from folks became fans at that show,” says Jones House concerts organizer, Mark Freed.

Other notable musicians the band has shared a stage with include Taj Mahal, Ramblin’ Jack Eliott, Iris Dement, Guy Clark, Jerry Douglas, Country Joe McDonald, and many more, as they are quite busy touring.  The band has also been busy recording, releasing albums in 2010, 2011, and 2013.

The Tillers were also featured on a television segment aired on the Today Show and the USA Network called American Character Along Highway 50, from which host Tom Brokaw said, “In their lives, and in their music, all three band members embrace a return to simplicity, a longing for freedom, and a hope for the future.”

The trio includes Mike Oberst, and brothers Sean and Aaron Geil, all of whom are singers and multi-instrumentalists, playing everything from fiddle and banjo to harmonica and kazoo.

“People should expect to hear a variety of instrumental and vocal combinations from this trio of well-rehearsed and well-presented musicians,” Freed adds.

Seats for the Tuesday evening concert at the Jones House are $20 each and can be reserved by contacting Mark Freed at 828.268.6280 or by email at mark.freed@townofboone.net
