Sugar Mountain’s 23rd Annual Oktoberfest Just a Few Days Away; Come Out for a Weekend of Family Fun

by Madison V. Fisler

Oct. 7, 2013. It’s almost here! Sugar Mountain’s annual Oktoberfest celebration, held at Sugar Mountain Resort, will provide music, food, fun and more for residents and visitors of the High Country once again on Oct. 12-13.

Returning guests of Oktoberfest will remember their previous experiences well, and find a lot of the same things reflected in this year’s Bavarian celebration. Oktoberfest began at Sugar Mountain 23 years ago and is still going strong. The family friendly celebration has so much more than beer to offer guests.

Live musical entertainment will be provided each day by the Harbour Towne Fest Band, which has been a staple at the event for more than five years. New to the festival this year, the Valle Crucis Middle School Band will give a special performance on Oct. 12, at 2 p.m.

Aside from the great music, there will also be a variety of craftsmen and artisans at Oktoberfest showing off their wares.

“We always have a great crowd of repeat craft and art vendors that our guests come to see,” Jochl said. “But we have a great selection of new ones every year.”

Artists this year include Taylor Made handcrafted jewelry, Buster’s Burnables and Jewelry by Jackie just to name a few. For a full list of artisans scheduled to come to Oktoberfest, click here.

Oktoberfest always includes an extensive kids section, and this year, there is even more fun for the little ones.

“New this year is our putt-putt course, a climbing wall and three bounce houses including an obstacle course and a giant slide,” Jochl said.

Also new this year, the kids area will be open one hour later than in previous years to maximize the fun for the whole family. This year, the kids section will remain open from noon-5 p.m. each day instead of closing at 4 p.m. as it did in previous years.

Chairlift rides to Sugar’s 5,300 foot peak will also be available during Oktoberfest for those who are looking for a little more adventure. This is your last chance to participate in this high-flying adventure until after the ski season. Hay rides are also available for the whole family to enjoy, as well as food vendors, beer and more!

The entire event, including parking and shuttle services, is completely free and open to the public. For food and crafts, Jochl suggests bringing cash and debit cards. There is an ATM on premises just in case.

“This is such a popular event because of the huge variety of things to do and the convenience of getting here,” Jochl said. “It’s a great way to enjoy a nice, crisp fall day with the whole family.”

While you’re there, don’t forget about the Sports Shop Super Sale during Oktoberfest. For more information about the Super Sale, click here.
