University of Zululand Choir from South Africa to Perform at St. Luke’s in Boone on Sept. 11

The University of Zululand Choir, established in 2001 in Durban, South Africa, will be performing at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Boone on Friday, Sept. 11. This choir is known throughout South Africa for its presentation of Choral, Afro Gospel, Afro Jazz, Afro Soul, traditional, indigenous and even opera music. Led by Mr. Bhekani Buthelezi, this choir has performed before the current president of South Africa, The Honorable Jacob Zuma as well as His Majesty, the King of Zulu Nation, King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu.

Winners of multiple awards, including the 2013, 2014 and 2015 National Championships in Arts and Choir Competitions, 15 of the 90 members of the UniZulu Chorale will be under the baton of Mr. Bhekani Buthelezi as they perform in Boone. Mr. Buthelezi, himself a noted teacher and singer, was a visiting scholar at Appalachian State University in the Fall of 2014, where he worked with choirs and conductors at the Hayes School of Music. During that time, the choir and congregation of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Boone were honored by his presence as one of their own and are equally honored and excited to be welcoming his return to ASU and the Boone community along with 15 members of his choir.

The concert is free, though donations are appreciated, and all donations will go to support the UniZulu Chorale. St. Luke’s Church is located at 170 Councill Street in Boone (behind Earthfare).
