U.S. Rep. Foxx to Host Information Session for Veterans in Boone on Friday, Aug. 11

U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., recently announced that she is hosting an information session for veterans on Friday, August 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the National Guard Armory, located at 274 Hunting Hills Lane in Boone.

“The entire nation owes our military personnel and veterans a huge debt of gratitude, and ensuring that debt is properly repaid is one of my top priorities in Congress,” said Foxx. “It is always an honor to assist veterans from the 5th District in any way possible, and I hope they find this event informative and beneficial.”

An estimated 3,500 veterans reside in Watauga County, according to Watauga County Veterans’ Services Officer April Wagner. The local veterans office assists in the filing of compensation claims, veterans and widows pension claims, dependency and indemnity compensation claims, burial benefits, vocational rehab applications and enrollments into the VA healthcare system.

In an interview for High Country Magazine’s April/May issue on the Watauga County Veterans Memorial project planned for downtown Boone, Wagner said that the areas veterans seem to need the most assistance with are “looking for options for health care for rural areas like Boone, finding jobs” and adjusting to life outside the military.

As for the information session with U.S. Rep. Foxx on Aug. 11, representatives from nonprofit organizations and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will be on hand to answer questions from veterans and their families as well as provide information and guidance regarding obtaining available benefits.
